"Shareholders and consumers who care about human rights should not let Olympic corporate sponsors off the hook. Their silence on abuses in the run-up to the Beijing Games makes their claims to support human rights especially disingenuous" (HRW)

I have not been buying from coke and McDonalds for awhile now because they are two sponsors of the Olympics. Of course the only two things I liked from McDonalds were McGriddles and ice cream fudge sundaes. Noted With Thanks Ben.

The IOC has given the Olympic games to China because the human rights situation would have been improved! Some people say it has some people say it definitely has not! The people who you can blame are the IOC managers who have made the contracts not the companies that had hoped for beautiful games in a beautiful country that respects human rights like all civillized countries should do! Do you think that Guantanamo is OK ?

The companies who are top partners of the Olympics will put pressure on the IOC believe me and the IOC is the only organisation that can tell China to keep its promises!

Who has the CSR for the Olympic games? I say the IOC! Not GE and Coca Cola!

The IOC ? http://www.olympic.org/uk/index_uk.asp

Or the sponsors?

I refuse to spend money on goods from ANY company which profit$ from the exploitation of others. Coke has long been on my list of exploiters.
McPoison's is just plain bad food and their practises are no better than Coke.

No quantanamo is horrendous also but does that mean we should ignore what China is doing to Tibetans, it is all disgusting. Corporations do not care about anybodys rights but their own, period.

I moved to Utah on Mar. 28, 1977, and I quickly learned the Beenhive State had been fighting for the Olympics since the 1950's.

Because of that, we got more than average Olympic coverage, especially when we began our second bid which turned out to be successful.

I remember people commenting when the PRC began bidding - the general consensus was China had human rights abuses and should not get it. When the IOC finally awarded China, we figured the IOC believed public pressure would force China to change.

First, it is interesting to contemplate what reaction the United States would have if we had the Olympics; the 2002 Salt Lake games were before the wars.

Second, as a conservative I have been writing the NAM about corporations and responsibility. Your comments are correct.

Yes, it's business as usual; why should the sponsors care for Human Rights and such?
Other Beijing Bloody Olympic Partners:
Kodak, Lenovo, Johnson & Johnson, VISA, Volkswagen,
Adidas, AIR China (surprise!), Omega, Panasonic, G.E.
and some Chinese companies, unknown to me.

The Chinese are unethical, cruel, and violent people. How can anyone ever expect that Chinese Companies will follow, adhere to ETHICAL behavior?? Chines products should NOT be accepted even for free!!!

I think the Chinese peoples themselves are browbeaten and brainwashed by their government, therefore not responsible for the whole mess with Tibet and the Olympics. The sponsor should be boycotted as well as MADE IN CHINA products and the TV stations. I am not going to watch the Olympics in protest. McGarbage I never eat, but Coca Cola has a lot of products besides Coke and one has to be careful not to buy them too.Same goes for Johnson&Johnson and I am sure a lot of other companies. The Chinese government will never change so the pressures will have to be kept up even after the Olympics and a 1000years more. That's how pessimistic I am that they will ever change. It's a country of sadists and military might and only the ones who are co-operators have a decent life, all others starve. If we knew everything that goes on in that country we would probably be sick to our hearts and stomachs.

I don't think we can blame the Chinese people in general.
They don't know much about what is going on anywhere.
Check out "China.com" and You will see what I mean.
There You can read things like "The olympic torch relay in Paris was a success!"; "CNN is turning black into white"...well, roughly: "don't trust any press, but the Chinese" (Nationalistic Communist Propaganda that makes You wonder: -should I laugh, or should I cry?)
It's the dictators in the government who are responsible for the very most.

Ben, you are absolutely right in your last comment. The Government of China still censors everything.

Thank you.
