Let's put President Bush's decision in context: no U.S. President has ever attended Olympic Games held outside of the United States. Ever.

Do you think it might have something to do with the trillions we owe China?

Reporters without Borders:
"Sarkozy and Bush are now depriving themselves of a means of leverage that might have led to the release of imprisoned journalists and human rights activists. We would like to know on what grounds these two presidents have reached their decision. There is still a month to go before the start of the 2008 Olympics. Now is the time for a massive campaign for an improvement in the situation of free expression in China. We appeal now for demonstrations outside Chinese embassies all over the world during the Olympic Games opening ceremony on 8 August."

Human Rights Watch:
"The Chinese government is failing to enforce its explicit commitment to the International Olympic Committee to ease restrictions on the operation of foreign journalists in China ahead of the 2008 Beijing Games…The Chinese government also violates the fundamental rights of its citizens through widespread use of the death penalty, restrictions on freedom of expression and religion and widespread violations of labor rights. Strict internet and media censorship is enforced by government agencies and the largest internet police in the world…Chinese authorities use a vast police and state security apparatus to enforce multiple layers of controls on critics, protesters, and civil society activists. The Public Security Bureau, responsible ostensibly for policing and security, in the name of 'public order' arbitrarily silences critics and members of civil society through an array of measures, including house arrest, which does not require formal legal proceedings to implement and maintain."

The situation of political repression in China has not at all improved, as promised, in this year of preparation for the Olympic Games. Instead, the dictatorial regime has cracked down on its own population. Who could have been naïve enough to believe their promises? Now, the International Olympic Committee has been reduced to practically begging the Beijing organizers of the Games to permit internet access during the Olympics.

I think his reasoning to go is he'll be able to spend more of taxpayers dollars! He feels he might as well travel now while he can do this as he'll be out of office (and GOOD RIDDANCE!)soon! He wants to do as 'good a job as he can (I'm being sarcastic) while in office. Then again, he may not return and . . . we'd have to put up with Cheny?

Thanks for this, Bengt; however, I am no longer surprised at Herr Bush's utter disregard for the rights of humans or animals.

I don't know . . . if you've got a disagreement with someone, snubbing them doesn't make sense either. If Bush didn't show, I'm not sure that would help the situation over there. I'm not a fan of the president's policies, but China's a stubborn country; they don't seem to put much stock in international censure. Historically, though, they have been swayed to change through diplomacy, even if they have drawn it out a bit to "save face". So I guess it depends-do we really want human and animal rights in China, even if it isn't immediately, or is it more convenient to be cranky about it right now?

Thank you Ben. Bush will never listen to the will of the people and he will continue to have complete disregard for human rights.

Hopefully when Bush meets his maker those who might want to make a tribute think twice about it!! What if any good could be said of this so called man??????? And, surely he must be aware of what us little people think of him but being slightly dimwitted I doubt he cares.

This President cares nothng about people not even his own here in the United States, why should he care since he only has a few more months in office. His attending the opening ceremony is condoning what they do to the people there & the animals. This man is so far out of it, he needs a reality check, he is not the most intelligent nor caring President & will never admit he has made mistakes, worse President in history. He is definitely ignorant!

I may be anti-Bush and anti-China, but I will never be anti-Olympics. The Olympics are supposed to represent alikeness of humanity. Granted, I don't appreciate that they are being held in China, nor that the prez would seem to support them, but I will never boycott the recognition of other human be-ings as just that, human be-ings. Article noted, and thank you.

And no doubt, also to show everyone that no one can influence anything that he does, least of all the American people.

Yeah, Bergie.
Reminds me of my recurring wet dream over the past few years where Pelosi becomes president.

Dear Mr. President.
Please make as many visits as you wish to China. Take the family and all your friends. Don't rush out on AF1. Take a nice slow boat, and don't come back.

I have a better question..., why did our athletes go to China? Their chance for "medal" over-rides the suffering of humanity and animals..., or their families made them do it? heh

I already know why Bush is going...**headache**

Right; it would be great if we could make the Beijing Bloody Olympics to a total fiasco! But, it will probably be a triumph, like the nazi games in Berlin 1936...

Noted and I completely agree with Ben. Bush has mortgaged our country to the Chinese and now out of some sense of having a duty to go to China, he leaves the impression that we are backing this Olympics. Well I am not only boycott watching it, I will also boycott any American Sponsors that are involved in the opening and closing ceremonies.I still can't figure out why China was chosen for the Olympics in the first place with their lack of human rights efforts. What was the committee thinking?

I don't have enough adjectives to describe the actions of Bush...I just hope the last 8 years have not completely ruined our future. Boycotting whatever I can of China related products and the Olympic coverage.
