Too bad, that offer is no longer on the table. The GOP said NO back then, and elections have consequences. The GOP took a beating at the polls and it's just time for them to get real and pay their fair share as the majority want. They need to stop being the nation's top teatsuckers. There is nothing worse than being BOTH rich and a freeloader.

The GOP actually made that offer Roseann. Then Obama picked up on it. They have offered it again and he has turned his nose up at it.

BTW it was not a beating. It was almost fifty fifty among the voters and I think the number of Americans who voted this time was far less than last time. Your country is divided right in half. If Obama was any kind of leader he would remember that and try and do what was right for the country as a whole - not a half but he is not even trying.

Of course they turned it down back then . About time he began 'turning his nose up ' at GOP in Congress. THey've done nothing but try and keep us split and they certainly haven't done a G.D. thing to help the nation recover. Stall..turn down appointment..delay after delay. Hope he keeps his nose high up when it come the Republican obstructionish. They should have done something to help the nation instead of the opposite for the last four years. Hope he kicks them at every turn until they stop working just for the rich/Corporates...
It's their careers on the line now...not the administrations. They'll have to do better or face ...unemployment in 2014, and rightfully so.........in my opinion.

Time for the Republican to start coming up with good deals for all of our society for a change . Time is over for them to accept past deals offered that they 'turned up their noses at' then. Time they ante up ... do better than the offers/appointments they've turned down for the past four years. . .or be ready to leave D.C. in exchange for the unemployment line they seem to set on for others , not themselves..

Tax increases without spending cuts are worthless. I hope the Republicans stand firm and don't let Obama get away with this nonsense of spending cuts to come later. Do it now.

The Tea Party/Conservative group is standing strong but Boner is trying to do an end run around them. He has just made himself a target of the Tea party so hope he is ready to retire.

How is it a wake up call for politicians when the only reason the debate happened is because those same politicians decided to make it an issue? Then again, it's a lame-duck Congress faced with meeting an imminent deadline. It is appropriate to devise a short-term but incomplete solution and pass the problem to the next Congress. I'm worried that the circus will clue bond buyers into the fact that we're fighting over $2T in deficit reductions out of 12. And that the $2T discussion isn't going well.

If Obama would get real and stop politicking lone enough to lead, this would be on the table as it is the most important issue. Raising taxes on any group is vinfictive. Let the Bush era tax cuts die for all as they were intended. Bush takes a lot of false crap from liberals but those cuts were never intended to be pemanent. Obama tries to make them so.

Since the government spends 59 Billion on social welfare and 92 billion on corporate welfare, I have no doubt we could raise a lot of money simply by ending corporate and military welfare. But the GOP started the war on the poorer people with their cuts to firemen, police, teachers, meals for the poor, even libraries. And now the people will demand that the rich pay their fair share - enough is enough.

The percentage of the population that is older and receiving Medicare and Social Security is going up. This will automatically increase the percentage of GDP going to Medicare and Social Security benefit - which, of course, Americans have paid for their entire working lives. The "deficit " banter is intended to sucker ordinary people into supporting a proposal to cut their own Social Security and Medicare benefits because "we're broke" and the Federal deficit is soaring out of sight.
First, of course, we're not "broke." Big corporations and the wealthiest Americans are making more money - and a higher percentage of America's total income - than ever. The fact is that if millionaires and billionaires paid taxes at the same rate they did during the Reagan Administration - and the income they earn clipping coupons on investments were taxed at the same rates as people who work for a living - that would go a long way to eliminating the deficit. Donít we eventually have to match spending and revenue? Yes, we do. But the decision about how to do that isnít about accounting. Itís about fundamental values.

Another year of tax cuts for the rich has changed that deal. Gotta make up the difference.

At least the warmongers should pay for all the wars they want. The war supporters can pick up the tab for the BushCo portion of the deficit, and the rest of us will pick up the pittance that Obama has added.

"Time for the Democrats to admit that America is broke Jae and QUIT THE DAMN SPENDING!!! "

You have no idea what you're talking about. Spending is at the lowest level in decades. America is not broke. Social Security is not broke. MediCare is not broke. Besides, cutting spending in a recession is a recipe for catastrophe.

Who Is The Smallest Government Spender Since Eisenhower? It's Barack Obama.

Cam, America is not broke, aside from the fact that the US owns 68.2% of its debt, and that debt is due entirely to Bush and the Repugs who never paid for a damn thing that they did from their Tax Cuts to Two Wars to Medicare Part D to No Child Left Behind. The USA was in the BLACK with a surplus until the Fiscally Responsible Repugs came into power, then in 8 years $14+ Trillion in debt. Every single Repug Administration since Eisenhower in the 1950s has grown the size and cost of government and reduced income at the same time. Clinton reversed it Bush flushed it down the shitter. In the first three full years of the Obama Administration the Debt and Deficit have gone down and job creation up in spite of the Repugs doing everything they could to ensure that no recovery occurred to ensure their political agenda. It did not work, the Repugs lost seats in the Senate, they lost seats in the House and they lost the White House by more than 3% and nearly 200 Electoral votes nd still counting. Wayne is right and you Cam are once again proven to be a lying foreign operative of the Repug/ Tea Bagged Party.

You can tell republicans over and over again that there are billions in corporate welfare paid to outsourcing multi-nationals every year and that over $71 billion is lost in tax breaks for the rich. They never absorb the information and always come back with some complaint about Obama. They don't address facts and, to try and get them to do so is simply a waste of time. They can't absorb the truth. They only absorb Fox talking points.

I believe that exchanging ideas is beneficial. But I am at my wit's end trying to explain anything to republicans. They don't want to get it.

Look at the election results. They cried and whined like lost kittens about how unfair America has been to them by not voting republican. Did they learn anything from the fact that the majority of Americans can't stand them? No. This week they voted against equal treatment for the disabled around the world and now they are openly trying to rig the electoral college.

They simply can't learn. It's like talking to a box of bricks.
