Remembering a Significant Otter: She Helped Save Her Species

Her name was Toola, and she died March 3, aged about 15 or 16. She was the first sea otter ever to raise pups that were successfully reintegrated to the wild. She also inspired legislation to protect sea otters, which are endangered.

From the article, "So here’s to you, Toola: You were a great mom, a credit to your species – and maybe even an inspiration to ours." Thanks Lindsey & thank you Constance for the heads up.

I personally worked with Toola in the Sea Otter Research and Conservation Program and she was by far my favorite otter. She was a beautiful otter who always kept the wild side I called her "Otter-tude". She taught us all many lessons but mostly, she commanded that we "Respect the Otter". She was an amazing mother, a strong, swift and crafty otter, outdoing even the best of us during the captures. She was my hero. I will always hold her wild spirit in my heart. We miss you Toola. May you enjoy all the peeled shrimp you want, on the kelp cloud in the sky.
