With human rights organizations around the world up in arms over the case, the president has caved to global pressure and saved the 15 yrs old girl from brutality. But flogging still remains a punishment for women and children in Maldives.

PETITION TO MOHAMMED WAHEED HASSAN: We thank you for saving a 15-year-old rape victim from public flogging -- but one rescue isn't enough. We call on your government to change the law so no sexual assault survivor will ever face brutal punishments for the crime committed against her. The world is watching -- do the right thing today!

We have the power to hit the Maldives government where it hurts -- the tourism trade. If we raise our voices to Maldives' leader, we can show that this much international attention will cripple the island's reputation and gut the tourism trade unless these laws are changed. Will you join us in pushing for change today?

NOTE- Once you've signed it IS COMPLETE, even without sharing on Facebook!

Discriminatory and UNJUST! Such women need protection, and not punishment! Another country where women are treated like second-rate citizens.

It's a twisted concept of justice to hold women and child victims responsible for horrific crimes against them, with the male perpetrators getting off without charges and even treated as if they were the victims. Signed and shared, thanks, Angelika.

How NAUSEATING to actually REWARD the rapist by flogging the victim. Who would want to report a criminal assault on their body if they would be the ones punished? STOP ENCOURAGING RAPE !

How about -flogging the perpetrators -the cowardly -gutless men??of islam who are the real abusers -not the innocent -defencless women who bear the guilt and punishment for whatever -sin -they commit-how dare they do that to -her -it is not a good picture -watching these -bully boys -flogging a woman -knowing the -real culprit is getting away -with it-shame on them-there is no -justice for -women in -islam.

We aren't so much "going backwards" - this sort of thing has been going on for AGES.
It is only NOW, WITH THE INTERNET - that such atrocities as this, are BROADCAST ALL OVER.
Yes, this was going on in the days of newspapers and newsmagazines, radio and TV - but NEVER REPORTED.
Or if so, only as a little bit of foreign "quaintness" and travel "color"....

The Internet, truly makes it ALL ONE WORLD.
News can no longer be CENSORED - or left to the discretion of biased {and Male!} Editors, with their eyes on SELLING the News...

WOMEN'S VOICES can NOT be silenced, ANYwhere, any more... and it is WE who can and do SHOW SOLIDARITY WITH WOMEN AND CHILDREN EVERYWHERE, no matter what Cultural or Geographical Boundaries, for us such "Boundaries" in effect DON'T EXIST ANY MORE.

Beka, are the Serbs going back to find and bring to trial all the rapist of Bosnian women?

Angelika R (143)

Don't expect that, Phil. Serbs are more concerned now about getting their pass into the EU..which won't happen as long as they cannot accept Kosovo's independence.
