The California District Attorneys Association and Senator Joel Anderson of San Diego have introduced a bill to bring back executions by gas chamber. Yes, you read that right: after the SAFE California campaign nearly succeeded in replacing the death penalty, the district attorneys of California responded with a wild attempt to take us back to an even darker age.

Sign the petition to the California District Attorneys Association and Senator Joel Anderson to let them know that the people of the United States reject this desperate attempt to return California to the dark days of gas chamber executions. Let them know that SB 779 is shockingly misguided and out of step with the values of the people of the United States of America.

This is appalling! Signed with comment: "It's time we as a nation abolished all capital punishment. It has been proven not to deter crime." Shared and noted as well. Thanks very much, Angelika.

I guess one could say that the death penalty deters crime for that one person. Just not as a deterrent for other criminals, and that is the point of a deterrent is it not?

Gas chamber? Even people who support capital punishment wouldn't support that, would they?
I've read descriptions of that kind of death, and perhaps those who support it should actually see one.

Paul M - allow me to find your comment quite strange. You are SORRY to have signed for this inhumane execution for humans? Every signer for euthanasia by gassing pets should ALSO sign for humans alike!! I do!

We did it!

Thanks to you and thousands of other supporters, we defeated Senate Bill 779 yesterday in Sacramento! SB 779 was an insane proposal to bring back gas chamber executions to California – along with a host of other unworkable proposals. When the Senate Committee on Public Safety said “NO WAY” in a 2-4 vote, we breathed a huge sigh of relief.

SB 779 is the latest proof that death penalty proponents are desperate. They’re frantic because California voters came within a hair's breadth of replacing the death penalty last November. Everyone knows that the system is a wreck that is enormously costly and a public policy failure from top to bottom. But when will they admit that the death penalty in California is broken beyond repair? There is simply no solution that won’t risk innocent lives and waste even more of our precious state dollars.

Thanks to all who took action to defeat SB 779
