Fishing Under Fire Off the Gaza Coast

World  (tags: Gaza, GAZA SIEGE, Israel, Palestinian fishermen, 6-mile zone, Palestinian human rights, palestine )

I look at Mukhtar's handheld GPS and check it against the map app on my phone. Both agree: we're 5.7 nautical miles northwest of Gaza City. Nowhere near the border zone, and within the six mile limit.

Harassed by Israeli gunboats, Palestinian fishermen are chasing dwindling shoals in the heavily guarded six-mile fishing limit off the Gaza coast. Alex Renton goes aboard to see what it's like to be a fisherman in some of the world's most contested waters.

Please read on at visit site - get a little history lesson and learn the facts on the ground.

I read this. Thanks Angelika. Really abysmal. I don't know hoe they endure it, day after day. Marginalizing an entire people, threatening their livelihood and survival, is unjust, cruel and revulsive.

That's horrible! How do they put up with this kind of constant bombardment day after day? Thanks for sharing, Angelika.

If Hamas ruling Gaza was not at war with Israel like the West Bank is. If Hamas terrorists weren't trying to smuggle missiles and shells from Iran and elsewhere using small boats. If Islamic terrorists did not use ALL available means to dig fortified tunnels under Gaza/Israel border and kidnap or kill Israelis.

If there were NO such IFs, then this one-sided article in usually anti-Israeli "The Guardian" would make some sense. Now it doesn't.

Bob, I expected no different comment from you-so, no surprise. I am just glad that your stance is not shared by the majority, neither regarding the PEOPLE of Gaza( there are more than just Hamas), not regarding the 'Guardian', which by the way is far from being 'anti-israel'. Know that being pro Palestinians does NOT also mean being anti-Israel!!

*NOR* regarding the ...

Syd H (48)

I'm sorry Bob, but if these things that Israel does to Palestinians was being done to Israelis not only would the Israelites be doing the same things (and likely much more) as the Palestinians, they'd be raising hell & cheering 'em on throughout the world too. It amazes me that the people who survived WWII with such dignity are now the ones doing much the same to another group.

Israelis seem to think starving people and mob/gang-like collective & familial retaliation is an effective punishment. Proving that the biggest bullies in high school were those who were bullied in elementary school.

Don't justify; fix it. Be the change you want to see in the world. Start with stopping your own festering hate cultivation. Take a cold hard look at what Israelis are doing both on a personal and a governmental level. Of what is there to be afraid?

How many Palestinians (Muslims) have you had over for dinner?

THANK YOU SYD !!! no use as for bob-he is an Islamophobe and will never see what you suggest he should-just like all others of his kind-prefering to listen to those other voices in the media..
and PLEASE be careful with your terms and wordings- do NOT say "Palestinians" when solely referring to radical terrorist Hamas!

Syd H (48)
Thursday December 19, 2013, 8:54 am

Hmmm... I did not refer to Hamas at all, so not sure where I might need to be careful in my terms & wordings. I will admit I do not understand all that is going on because it's all so terribly complicated (and yet not so much as it all boils down to the same dysfunction humans have fostered throughout our existence as we just cannot be same enough for our comfort, we will always find a way to divide and divide again).

However, I just tangled with Bob over the idea that only Muslims commit domestic violence (crimes against women...). ::sigh:: so I've seen his mindset unfortunately. :(

Intolerance, collective hate, punishing innocents, it's all ugly and there just can be no justification no matter who is doing it. But it has to start with somewhere, with someone... and wouldn't it be cool if Bob decided to stop hating, and spreading it as well?

What I've found is when we face our fears, when we meet people face to face, we gain so much, not just friends, but lasting relationships, and the entire world, not just our tiny microcosm is much richer for it.

Choose love, or at least not fear.

Syd-i was actually NOT referring to only your comment there, meant it as a general advice. ..although this " ..not only would the Israelites be doing the same things (and likely much more) as the Palestinians.." could easily be interpreted as such. And again, you're so right with above comment, thx!

You know, I probably should not say anything, but maybe that's the problem is all those who are afraid to say something, to take a stand... but, I saw a post several months ago by one of the haters here on C2 condemning all Palestinians because one little girl said some mean things, maybe threw a stone... and the hatefest began in the comments as bad and often much worse than anything this girl supposedly said. Yet, where did she learn it from?

Why is it perfectly okay for a little girl on the other side to spit out much worse and even include some saliva?

Indeed she is cheered on.

"Do as I say, not as I do" seems to be the mantra of so many of those who are oppressing.

I would feel the same if the situation was reversed. It's not about the labels, but about what is truly right and compassionate. Starving people is not the way to build peace. Controlling them is not either. If this was happening in the US you can bet there would be a hellstorm of nutso people protesting and sabotaging and calling names, and attacking, and... all those would be celebrated as beautiful martyrs.

We cannot condemn others for the sins we continue to commit. The only thing we can change is ourselves. And when we do it's remarkable how much different the world becomes for it.

Especially now in what is supposedly "tis the season" for one of the world's so-called "peace" religions.

This is harassment and intimidation by Israeli coastguard. I am disgusted with them interfering and trying to marginalize Gazans, and their right to earn a living. OUtragous and BULLIES.

This is all part of the continuing Israeli policy of genocide by harrassment to force them to leave, starvation until they die, and military force to gradually reduce the Palestinian population until the day Israel can proudly proclaim a Greater Israel. And it happens because of the support of the USA and it's lapdog the UK.

I stand with ISRAEL

Palestinian's deserve all they get, they reap what they sow !!!!!!!!!!!! .

STOP bombing Israel and i'm sure life will improve for Palestinians,
and if they don't stop bombing ISRAEL, then they have to suffer the consequential's of their actions.

Gaza, also called the biggest open air prison in the world. Fishermen are being shot at, no matter where they are, their boats confiscated, GPS equipment "removed" (stolen), boats damaged should they be given back at all. Mothers are forced to give birth at border checkpoints, ambulances not allowed to come near. Newest weapons tested on Palestinians and neighboring countries. I could go on and on. Finally, I do declare herewith, I fully stand behind Palestinians. So much for the only democracy in the near east. I'll be busy for some time now, sending stars...

..let's all remember the IDF/ IOF's abysmal mantra:" only a dead e'rab is a good e'rab" - needless to add any comment to that. It looks to me as if any and all Israel supporters making nasty comments about INNOCENT Palestinians may agree with that despicable slogan.
