in a truly appalling move, hundreds of newly and legally married Utah couples have been told that their marriages are now "on hold until further notice" and will not be recognized by the state of Utah - even though they were sanctioned by that state.

Governor Gary Herbert's office has ordered state agencies not to recognize these legal marriages performed over the past few weeks, following a court ruling that permitted them. That decision is now being appealed to the Supreme Court.
"Governor Herbert, how dare you order state agencies not to recognize legal marriages? You should be ashamed, and you should reverse that decision immediately."

Breaking: Obama Administration Will Recognize Same-Sex Marriages in Utah

CNN - The Justice Department announced Friday it will recognize - for federal purposes - same-sex marriages performed for a short period in Utah. - (The state on Wednesday said it would not recognize the approximately 1,000 marriages or marriage licenses)

This IS INDEED of interest, thx David for this update! Nevertheless, that idiot Gov still needs to be SHAMED and TOLD SO! In this new development the detour via SCOTUS will likely be obsolete-good!

I seem to recall a legal determination in CA on this issue that required the State to acknowledge all marriages performed while it was legal; that may be part of the issue HRC has filed on.

Friggin' small minds. (Frankly, I was shocked that Utah even -- although briefly recognized -- passed a same-sex marriage law.)

Ya know, it's the HYPOCRISY of the TP/Republicans that galls me most.

While they protest over-involvement of government in their lives, and will protect, with great enthusiasm, their right to their own lifestyle choices and religious followings . . . they have no problem with allowing the government to invade the consciences and extremely personal decisions of women and their bodies. Further, while resenting a "Nanny state," they persistently interfere with the rights of individuals to live their own lives according to their personal and non-confrontational-to-others beliefs, if they disagree with their own.

Sounds as though he's gone mad - he reminds me of King Henry VIII - who married Anne of Cleves, then divorced her and made her his sister so he could marry Catherine Howard, killed Catherine then wanted to marry Anne of Cleves again. Such madness. Men in power think they can get away with anything and they often do.

Allowing the marriage of young girls you deem possible and call it Bountiful. Yet fearful of marriage between couples who BOTH consent to their marriage. Clearly Utah governor is skewed.

Strange, for a short time same sex marriage was legal in Oregon. My nephew and partner were married. They reversed the law and refunded their $60 fee. Petition gladly signed. I like the question that Roseann posed. How about the polygamists? My BOYZ, as I call them, are now legally married in WA state where we live.

There was another man who thought he had the right to determine what the definition of marriage was. Ended up creating a whole new religion, too--Henry VIII, I think it was...

And look just how well he's regarded now!

Sorry, Governor Herbert, but you are not a sanctioned person (the King or Sovereign) to reverse, these legal contracts of marriage whether the couple is same-sex or not. And what you are doing is against public policy. What this does tell everyone is that you are not fully understanding your role as a Governor and need to step down. Instead of being in the business of governing your state you are preoccupying yourself with being a busy body and trying to play "bedroom police". While, you don't have to personally be in favor of all things, but your job in office is to make sure that all are being treated fairly and equally under the law and in this case, the law that has sanctioned marriage.

Great Lawsuit & Criminal Prosecution time! "will not be recognized by the state of Utah - even though they were sanctioned by that state." Once a right is given & that right exercised, it's MUCH harder to take away! I hope the newly married couples get the ACLU to sue & the Att. General to Prosecute the jerks trying to "un-marry" them!

It is 'something' when those sworn to up hold laws can decide not to on personal 'beliefs if the laws don't agree with their personal religious beliefs. Bottom line...laws are for everyone but those in office that are sworn to uphold them ? The man is 'a tool' of the worst Mormon kind me thinketh..as well as a poor excuse of an elected official that is 'sworn' to up hold laws. Yet they do and they walk around still in office as if it's their right to decide what laws to uphold or not....a lot of these types in office today and to me...that's just wrong for all Americans. . .but it's what 'Rightwing/GOPers' love to do...break laws while in office, based on their 'personal' beliefs............%$*(@&WTF ! This 'tool' needs a kick in the rear all the way to the unemployment curb along with that slap Angelika mentioned !

Noted and signed with an added comment to my doing so , calling for his resignation as well as arrest for not following Utah state laws as he was sworn to do when he took office.. The man is a criminal at large IMO.

:-}

I am not sure about the pvt. messages Angelika, ..I may have received them but ol mind is on a whole lot of different ..major things in our life as of late Angelika, with little time for one of my fav past-times...care2 . so I am usually in a rush when I come to it and don't always get to read all that I want or note and comment on all that I would like to read. No doubt I sometimes miss file what I do/have in the old noggin. If that's the case here...big ''oooops' ..but happy to hear we are on the same page when it comes to this, in my opinion, criminal at large...or at best...a very unworthy politician when it comes representing all the people in his state and one who goes against the laws of his state in order to represent s 'special interest'/select group only within his state...

Only a judge can "unwed", this is called "divorce".

But once legally married, you're legally married, it's as simple as that.

Divorce, death, and that's about all there is to end a legal marriage.
