Swine flu vaccine to be cleared after five-day trial

The path of a popular medicine from the laboratory to the chemist or doctor’s surgery can involve years of clinical trials on a select group of patients.

When the new vaccine for swine flu arrives in Britain, regulators said this weekend, it could be approved for use in just five days.

Regulators at the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) said the fast-tracked procedure has involved clinical trials of a “mock-up” vaccine similar to the one that will be used for the biggest mass vaccination programme in generations. It will be introduced into the general population while regulators continue to carry out simultaneous clinical trials.

The first patients in the queue for the jab - being supplied to the UK by GSK and Baxter Healthcare - may understandably be a little nervous at any possible side effects. A mass vaccination campaign against swine flu in America was halted in the 1970s after some people suffered Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disorder of the nervous system.

However, regulators said fast-tracking would not be at the expense of patient safety. “The vaccines are authorised with a detailed risk management plan,” the EMEA said. “There is quite a body of evidence regarding safety on the trials of the mock-up, and the actual vaccine could be assessed in five days.”

The UK government has ordered enough vaccine to cover the entire population. GPs are being told to prepare for a nationwide vaccination campaign.

Dr Peter Holden, the British Medical Association’s lead negotiator on swine flu, who has been attending Department of Health meetings on the outbreak, said GPs’ surgeries were prepared for one of the biggest vaccination campaigns in almost 50 years.

He said although swine flu was not causing serious illness in patients, health officials were eager to start a mass vaccination campaign, starting first on priority groups. First, the jabs would reduce the chances of a shortage of hospital beds because of people suffering from swine flu. Second, it would reduce the effect on the economy by ensuring workers were protected from the virus.

“The high-risk groups will be done at GPs’ surgeries. People are still making decisions over this, but we want to get cracking before we get a second wave, which is traditionally far more virulent.”

Holden said it was likely the elderly would be given their seasonal flu jab as well as the swine flu vaccination. The new vaccine is likely to require two doses.

Details of the inoculation plans emerged after the death of a patient, reportedly a middle-aged man, at a hospital in the Basildon area of Essex. The victim had no underlying health problems, but officials say there is no evidence the swine flu virus had mutated into a more dangerous strain.

Holden said it would be the biggest campaign in response to an outbreak since mass vaccination against smallpox in 1962. He said surgeries would be aiming to inoculate about 30 people an hour in a “military-style operation”.

The Department of Health said it had still not finalised which groups would be vaccinated first, but children, frontline health workers, people with underlying illnesses and the elderly are likely to take priority.

The European Commission is also identifying population groups which it believes should get priority. It is keen to ensure that countries such as the UK, which had ordered supplies of the vaccine in advance, do not cause inequities in treatment elsewhere in Europe.

It warned health ministers in a note circulated last month that if the vaccines were more readily available in some countries it could cause “vaccine tourism/shopping in other member states”.

About 15 people have died of swine flu in Britain, but most of those infected get only mild symptoms. According to the latest figures from the Health Protection Agency, the UK has had 9,718 confirmed cases of the disease.

I get nervous on these fast track vaccines. I was told by my employer, at the time I worked for the State, that I had to get the vaccine for the flu back in 1976. I was young and healthy and really didn't want this put into my system. Yet I was told I HAD to..to keep my job. I didn't think that was right either, forcing me to take a medication. So I called in sick that day, I wasn't, and when I returned to work next day I was informed I had to make an appointment to see my Doctor for this vaccine. I didn't make the appointment either, telling them so many were running to the Doctor I couldn't been see right away. In any case I'm glad I avoided this for next thing I know they stopped this mass vaccination for that flu saying it was causing major health problems. Needless to say I was never asked again to go get this vaccine and everyone at work was then nervous that they may be an unlucky one to come down with something worse. I didn't trust them then, I do not trust them today.

For the last few years at my regular GP the nurse has come to me with an air of expectation and a loaded needle -it has been a flu shot and they were told in no uncertain terms that if they wanted to give someone a shot that someone would not be me. Not then, not now-not ever!

I have never gotten the flu shot or any other that I felt I didn't need. I don't trust the fast trial anymore than the others. Knock on wood-I have not had the flu since I was, gosh, a kid I think. Thanks Raffi for sharing.

I have taken the flu shot since it was invented and stopped getting the flu. Certianly as with any medication it is choice, even school vaccines have opt-outs.

Guillain-Barré is a very unique syndrome, the cause varies for each afflicted

The problem with flu shots is that the viruses coming out of Asia and Indonesia are monitored, the 10 most likely to spread a chosen and then the WHO reviews the information and they select 3 or 4. It does not mean that those viruses will cause a problem but most people I know get a reaction to the innoculation. As a consequence, my elderly parents, my younger son, my husband and I have always refused them. This 5 day trial concerns me greatly and think that there is enough time to do some monitoring before forcing the population to take them.

Thanks for the info, but I think I'll wait a bit longer than for a five day trial. After a friend had a real bad reaction to the flu shot years back, I've opted out on these shots. Somebody's going to be making a heck of a lot of money on peoples fears once again.

Typical of the UK Government a knee jerk reaction by a bunch of jerks! The only saving grace of this virtually untried vaccine is they have not had much time to abuse too many animals with it! I find these changes of direction very difficult to understand in the context of the usual Government responce, being, such as we have to test on animals to make sure it's safe on humans etc etc. The rule obviuosly is transcended by political expediency and Governmental panic. I guess they have not got a sufficient supply of brown trousers for issue to politicians!

Before you consider getting a vaccination, request that the Baxter Pharma, government and health officials vaccinate themselves with independent testers and officials certifying those vaccinations are exactly the same vaccines as what the general population will receive. Let's see what they say when you request that they get the vaccinations before you do and wait out the 5-day period, maybe a longer time period for possible side-effects.

Someone, somebody stands to make a lot of money on this so-called "vaccine".

I have always taken the flu jab since I had a stroke a few years ago and although I often had a dose of the sniffles and a feeling of tiredness I did not suffer any lasting side effects.However last winter I was called to the doctors surgery for my annual jab and was told that this time because I was considered to be an at risk patient I was to recieve a combination of two vaccines.I for the life of me cannot remember what the other was named.after a couple of days I felt very unwell and had to take to my bed.I phoned the doctor's surgery and told them I was ill and had had a reaction to the vaccine.I was told not to worry the vacinne had been aproved for general use and my suspicions were unfounded.Since then I have been under constant care and been given at least four courses of anti biotics.The first course had a dose of 250mg tablets three times a day.The second course was increased to two 500mg tablet three times a day.When this was finished
because I was showing very little sign of recovery I was prescribed a more powerful dose.When I presented my prescription at the pharmacy the pharmacist came to me and asked me what the doctor had told me.When I said very little she then asked if it would be in order for her to phone my doctors surgery I of course agreed.When she came back she told me that the prescription was indeed correct but she had never before seen such a high dose of such a poweful atibiotic prescribed.She told me this was for two doses of capsules of 500mg tablets to be taken three times a day a total dose of 3,000 mg per day.She also told me that such a high dose could have very bad side affects and if I experienced any ill effects to go to the nearest hospital emergency department.I was of course extremely perturbed by this but after further assurances I decided to contine with the treatment.Thankfully I did not experience any of the worst side effects but I did suffer from severe leg cramps and stomach pains and nausea.The upshot of all this now that I have finished with this treatment I feel no better now than when I first started it.I am now very reluctant to begin any more treatments and I certainly will not accept anymore vaccine combinations. This started just before chrismas with no tangibe results.

my doc keeps insisting I get a pertussis vac, I tell him no way, none of that animal tested b.s. for me, and guess what? my cough goes away each year with my allergies. which I also take nothing for.

The flu vaccines contain Thimerosal, which is a form of mercury used as a preservative; and it is the ingredient many of us think has played a large part in the unusual and rapid rise in the rate of autism in children. The type of neurological damage that can be caused by mercury can also be a causal factor in Alzheimer's. After beginning to phase out Thimerosal in childhood vaccines in the 90s, drug companies added aluminum instead, another toxic metal with unknowable and untested side affects.

Donald Rumsfeld is a big shareholder of Tamiflu. He made $5million on the bird flu drug in 2004-2006. I don't know if he has any connection to new flu vaccines.

Whew! I sweat buckets when I hear ppl want to take vaccine shots! Yep, Suzanne and Jim are right on the dot! Donald Rumsfield worked for Searle (now Pharmacia Corp) to get artificial sugar, aspartame approved, amongst the Bird Flu hoax! Bird Flu is a GMO disease (same for Sars and H1N1), made and born in a science lab.

I don't know what else you can do (I do not know of anyone who has never had any vaccine in their life) except to detox with vege and herbs. There's some good healthy recipes on Care2!! 2-thumbs up!!

Thank you again, Blue_Bunting! Yes Roseann, it's laughable!

I've always suspected the cause of my auto immune disease (have had left knee joint pains since I was 19, etc)! Hidden toxics in food and air, and now this (vaccines)! It makes me very upset and angry that there are people who do not think one "dust particle" about your health or welfare.

Thanks for all the amazing comments everyone-I am most amused that since the flu died down and became little more than a whisper in the press-they rushed this vaccine-seems they are desperate to make this fly-someone, of course, is getting big kick backs-and they cannot afford to let the big scare just fade away-it very nearly did-it was all but forgotten-it will be interesting to see what happens next. The five day trails say it all-thanks Blue and everyone! Really appreciate the stories about your personal experience with this.

Considering the top news story was the first child's death in England from H1N1 yesterday I dare say nothing has been swept under the rug. Also the flu vaccine is very available without thimerosal, simply ask. One poster is very correct about targeted strains, this is due to antigenic drift and shift capacity of the virus.

I am pleased your amused Raffle I feel sure those infected in 74 countries who have officially reported 28,774 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, including 144 deaths, are not amused. The fact the 1918 virus is still here makes me wonder if the virus is amused at you.

To the person who chooses to not take the pertussis vaccine, I certainly agree it is your choice to repeatedly get the illness, have it damage your lungs permanently, then every following years infection does more damage thus predictably making you a good candidate to end up like many whose life ends in the misery of suffocation, medical decisions are individual but let me assure you disease does damage with every infection that does not go away when the symptoms do.

A vaccine is a tool, no more no less. A smart person attempts to use the right tool for the right job, you would not try to hammer a nail with a shovel....well maybe you would, but you would soon find it did not work well even if it got the nail in.

I have no desire to interfere with anyone's personal medical choice, it is your right. But after reading this thread I suggest you get rid of the shovel, stop reading internet blogs and PeTA or PCRM propaganda for you medical advice, and read real studies, both sides but real information, not hype or paranoid rant.

Become an informed patient, from real information not Vegan health news or medical propaganda sites. I often wonder why folk like you even go to a doctor? Seems a bit foolish and a waste of money to pay someone for advice and then not take it. Kind of like going to a gas station with a flat tire, having the mechanic tell you it's flat and needs to be fixed and you drive off mumbling about the gas monopoly and how its all whatever you believe while your tire rips off, destroys your rim, snaps your tie rods and totals your car.
