Emails sent! I live in this county and am stunned that the supervisors would take cats away from a sanctuary that was caring for them. This s not a case of hoarding, this is a case of animal welfare. The County Shelter can't handle the volume or special needs cases. They will just get put down. Why do this? They should be glad the sanctuaries exist. I also was not aware the county had a 4 cat limit. Are they kidding?

I have just received a reply from Susan Upchurch, one of the supervisors to whom I wrote.
Here is her reply:

"Thank you for your message regarding TaraSun Rescue. Our office has received many e-mails and phone calls regarding our Animal Care and Control Department and their efforts to enforce a County Ordinance regarding limitations on the number of animals kept at residential properties.

TaraSun rescue was first notified that their operation was not in compliance with land use regulations over 6 months ago following a citizen complaint about conditions at the rescue. ACC staff worked with the rescue operator and gave repeated extensions of time to the shelter applicant, including the most recent and final extension of 90 days. Our office has worked with another humane organization, who attempted to assist TaraSun in placing some cats at their rescue in an attempt to reduce their number - which does exceed those allowed by our County ordinance. A local attorney also offered pro bono legal assistance to the shelter operator. Though assistance was offered, the operator did not accept assistance and asked that no one from the County contact her prior to the end of the 90 day extension granted to her.

I have received confirmation from ACC today that the operator of the rescue may be subject to civil sanctions under the ordinance if the cat population has not been reduced at the end of the 90 day period. At the current time, these sanctions will not involve seizure of the animals at the facility, but may involve a financial penalty if the facility has not been brought into compliance as required by current law. Further actions may result if additional complaints are received about the facility.

The County of Sonoma is committed to policy revision of ordinances involving pets, which have not been reviewed in the last decade. As part of the current work plan for the department, the standards relating to animal rescue groups - as a compliment to our animal shelter goals of finding good homes for adoptable animals - will be factored when we look at applicable ordinances as they apply to land use guidelines and rescue work.

Thank you for your concern for animal welfare, and your advocacy for a reasonable resolution to this situation."

I think that there is still need to write to them, even if she said that AT THIS TIME (they can always change their minds) they do not plan to seize the cats.

Those who are posting and sharing this, need to make the time to research what the current status is before going on a witch hunt, because they have made repeated attempts, including free legal services, partner sanctuaries willing to take some of the animals, and ALL WERE REFUSED by these people. There is no seizure of animals planned, also no county agency can take someones private animals and kill them without a court hearing, etc. or they would be facing a massive lawsuit , which the owners of the animals would win because the animals are private property until a judge awards them to the agency that seizes them. Usually this only happens in cases of extreme neglect. PLEASE everyone, get the facts straight ! A cry of WOLF! Is usually ignored the second time, there are enough battles out there, for people who are in far more desperate situations. Also, if you start a sanctuary, or rescue, for GODS SAKE, CHECK YOUR ZONING, or you will only have yourself to blame if your situation turns into a mess like this one. Just because we rescue it doesn't mean we are above the laws. They are usually enforced at some point.

no rescue which has put their heart and soul into their animals is going to give up without a fight. 'sanctuary and legal aid' may be worthless if they come from a questionable source. they did make the mistake of not knowing the county laws, but they are an asset to their community and the laws should be updated to accomodate non-profits. at care2, we are always on the side of the animals. if there is severe neglect (taking age and disability into consideration), then the animals should be removed. if they are content and cared for, they should remain where they are.

no change yet. however, sonoma county animal control posted this plea. clearly, they don't have the space or resources to deal with what is already on their plate. why on earth would they pursue the tarasun case:

"Hi Everyone, I’m reaching out to all of you in hopes that you can help us. Our kennels and cat rooms are full. We’re doubling and even tripling (if small enough), dogs in kenne
ls. We have adoptable cats waiting in the stray rooms for space to open up so they can be moved to the adoptable rooms.
If you have room for one or 20 please come and get them. If you’re close enough we will even deliver! We currently have 37 dogs and 60 cats up for adoption, with more being made available as I write. All of these animals have been examined by a vet, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, microchipped, and for cats under 6 mos felv tested, 6 mos and older felv/fiv tested. We have another 90 dogs and 40 cats on our stray side that you are welcome to as long as their hold time is up. Most of these have not been s/n, chipped or tested. We vaccinate and worm on intake. You can view all our animals on our website, www.theanimalshelter.org. Thank you in advance! Cathy"
