This incident doesn't depress me because of replacing a religious book with a secular one, not at all. But having read the free excerpts of the book from Amazon.co.uk as well as the original Twilight fan fiction (slash, actually), I can confidently say that Fifty Shades is the most unbelievably crappy text I've ever read in my whole life, all the bad fan fiction included. I thought the Twilight books had hit the rock bottom of incompetent writing, but this goes even further down the rabbit hole of literary badness. It combines the writing skills of an average six-year-old with the erotic imagination of a 2x4 board. To call it "erotic literature" is misleading marketing - it's not erotic and it isn't literature. The only good thing about Fifty Shades are all the hundreds of one-star reviews - you'll save a lot of time, money and nerves if you read the reviews instead of the book. To replace Bible with Fifty Shades "to reflect the modern secular society" is like serving the hotel guests a boiling pot of maggots and manure for dinner "to reflect the culinary tastes of the modern society". I could rant for hours on this subject, please don't make me start again...

Having not read the book, I really cannot comment on the book's literary value; from what I heard there is little to none. What bothers me is this hotel's need to replace the most beautiful prose ever written, with pulp trash.

Seems rather silly, but it sure did get them a lot of free advertizing, huh?

Does it come with naughty pictures? Can you get it in Braille? The poor housekeepers will have to pick up more condoms off the floors now.

I agree with Pia and Allan. I hadn't read 50 Shades either but to replace the Bible with trash..that should be against the law! God will definitely get the owner of the hotel when it's his time to leave this Earth. Thnx Marty.

Replacing Holy Bible with trash books shows that satan is doing his work in America.

Fifty shades of grey/gray is not great literature, but then again for you bible thumpers if you really read the bible there is a LOT of bawdy, evil and prejudiced passages. By the way fifty shades of grey has NOT nor is it likely to start any WARS. the bible on the other hand has every page dripping with BLOOD!

I'm not a Christian but I think that's pretty rude to do that..

Great news that an hotel challenges religious groups using coercive tactics by intruding their propaganda on people when no other alternative literature is available, I suggest any of Sam Harris's tomes would be preferable and supply food for constructive thought. Unlike the Bible he doesn't advocate pornography, sexual deviance, neither does he advocate killing people, nor encourage persecution of females,
and keeping of slaves. Yep Sam, or quite a few others ,are producers of much loftier, idealistic works of literature.

50 Shades? who cares? It's not as if it is a great masterpiece of literary work or has the power to transform the world; it will quietly fade into obscurity when the masses grow bored.
50 Shades = the latest pop song or celeb no one has heard of outside of the scandel mags.

Just to make my opinion clear: I don't care if the hotel owner replaces the Bible with a secular book. There are many people (myself included) who would rather spend their night at a hotel with some good (secular) fiction. But replacing anything with this epitome of poor writing is an insult to every literate guest. This choice doesn't reflect the "modern secular society", it reflects the modern dystopia of illiterate, low-brow thugs who regard Hustler as an art magazine. Really, if it's literary erotica that hotel guests are craving for, there are dozens of classic works that are good literature as well...

You know, I would never have noticed they replaced it.

And now come to think of it, if it was Twilight book, I wound not have noticed they switched it...
