Today's world is full of vibrant cities; Tokyo, Chicago, New York and Dubai, to name but a few. However, great cities and great civilizations existed thousands of years ago, whether they were based around religion or were bases of political power.

Very interesting. Thanks.

I find myself thinking of Shelley's "Ozymandias. King of kings."

Maybe it'll be our turn one of these days.

It's always amazing to look at the grander of time gone by but Roger M. has made a good point which we should keep in mind.

Macchu Picchu is the most beautiful of the ancient cities. It's breathtaking now, so how much more spectacular must it have been when it was intact and populated?

I don't know if Stonehenge qualified as a city. Angkor is the only place on this list that I have visited and it was fabulous. Being there at the time of the monsoon meant that the place wasn't overrun with tourists and thus especially atmospheric. I could have spent several days wandering around the ruins and I hope I will be able to go there again one day.

Palenque Mexico looks as if it has the nicest environment.
