The penalty for the near-total destruction of one of the biggest Mayan pyramids in Belize -- which the government called "unforgivable" and left archaeologists speechless -- may leave conservationists speechless: just $5,000

Its the disregard for history in the past thats prompted many museum collections. The Elgian marbles for example. They were being bombarded by cannon fire when Elgian purchased them from the local government at the time. They were saved from people who had no interest in their own history, only in the profit that could be made at the time. Current political climate say Elgian 'stole' their history. The people who distroyed the pyramid for their own profit care nothing foe their history, just the profit there of. I will say that 5000 is a lot of money in that area but not what the pryamid was worth. IMHO of course

What were they thinking? Oh, I'm only going to take a few rocks and nobody will notice?

5000 Dollars as a fine is ludicrous! The people of the Earth has lost a historical monument!
Although no fine in the world will ever bring it back, maybe 500,000 Dollars would be a start to try to restore it to some degree!
