What's Killing Florida's Manatees This Time?

Offbeat  (tags: animals, interesting, unusual )

In the past week the news came out--and was distributed widely--that the deaths were down to a "suite of toxins," some that may be previously unknown. The toxins were found on the manatee's food and are thought to be produced by algae.

Maybe we should be asking BP about this and all those chemicals they used to "clean up" the spill...

Noted. When I moved to FL from CT 25 years ago, I didn't know what a manatee was. Upon seeing my first, at a state park, I was fascinated by them. The biggest threat, in those days, was folks in speed boats whose blades cut them. As I learned, in this still-confederate land, this was something harder to control than just setting speed limits and putting up signs to watch for the creatures. Not long ago, I was delighted to find that the scare of their potential extinction was gone. Now, here we are. Sad, sad stuff. 25 years here has convinced me that Floridians could do more....and simply aren't.

Read and noted. Most people would be able to say the toxin(s) are caused by illegal toxic waste dumping. The scary part is that the toxin(s) is untraceable so far - if you find see it in the body, there's no proof...

нужны дополнительные исследования и строгое наказание виновникам экологической катастрофы!
