Israel's Latest Assault on Gaza: The Lie of Who Started It

As in every vicious military offensive Israel carries out in Gaza, the dominant narrative is that it is a response to rocket fire from Gaza. This is how it's being reported in the US, and this is how virtually every American understands it. IT IS A LIE.

Israel has again attacked Gaza. In its aerial and ground assault that began on Saturday, November 10th, at least 7 Palestinians have been killed, 5 of them civilians, 3 of whom were children. Up to 52 others, including 6 women and 12 children, have been wounded.

As in every vicious military offensive Israel carries out in Gaza, the dominant narrative is that it is a response to rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel. This is how it’s being reported in the US, and this is how virtually every American understands it.

And it’s a lie.

It’s true that on Saturday, prior to the expanded Israeli bombardment, the military wing of the Popular Front For the Liberation of Palestine shot an anti-tank missile at an Israeli Defense Forces vehicle near the Gaza border, wounding four Israeli soldiers. But what prompted the firing of the anti-tank missile?

First, on Monday, November 5th, Israeli forces shot and killed 23 year old Ahmad Nabhani when he “approached the border fence with Israel.” According to at least one account, Nabhani was mentally challenged.

Then, on Thursday, November 8th, the Israeli Occupation Forces – eight tanks and four bulldozers, to be exact – invaded southern Gaza, shooting and killing a 13-year old boy. Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (via):

According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 16:30 on Thursday, as a result of the indiscriminate shooting by IOF military vehicles that had moved into the ‘Abassan village, 13-year-old Ahmed Younis Khader Abu Daqqa was seriously wounded by a bullet to the abdomen. At the time he was shot, Ahmed had been playing football with his friends in front of his family’s house, located nearly 1,200 meters away from the area where the IOF were present.

So, even if honest observers brush to the side the cruel and inhumane Israeli blockade on Gaza and refuse to let it influence the equation of exactly which side started this flare up of violence, it is clear Israel started this latest clash. And in response to the response, Israel has waged a harsh, disproportionate military assault.

This would be a simple thing to understand if, for example, Western media bothered to ask the other side what happened. Palestinian news media immediately reported that the anti-tank missile Israel was supposedly responding to was admitted to by the Popular Resistance Committees, who described it as “revenge” for preceding Israeli violence on Gaza. But that basic task of honest journalism is apparently out of the question.

Every single Israeli incursion or attack on Gaza is accompanied by the same narrative: Israel fairly responded to unprovoked Palestinian rocket fire. The last major war on Gaza, Operation Cast Lead in December ’08-January ’09, also carried this narrative. Israel committed war crimes in that one-sided conflict, targeting and killing hundreds of civilians, using indiscriminate weapons, and intentionally destroying civilian infrastructure. It has become an accepted fact – even among critics of Israel – that the offensive was a response to Hamas rocket fire. The rocket fire did indeed occur immediately before the assault, but it was in response to Israel’s breaking of the six-month cease-fire, which even Israeli officials in WikiLeaks cables admitted Hamas had kept to.

Fortunately many of us, myself included, who chose to get CORRECT and UNBIASED information, have known this for a while and we have posted this truth as well. Even Haarez reported this, along with other Jewish sources!
UNfortunately many still don't believe it and prefer to trust their conservative sources.
If you study the LONG RECORD of Israels breaking of ceasefires you know who usually starts agression.

The Facebook page for Fatah in Lebanon has posted a picture of a mother dressing her young son with a suicide belt. Palestinian Media Watch has documented the ongoing glorification of violence and Martyrdom by the PA. This picture was posted on the Fatah Facebook page together with an imaginary conversation between the son who is being sent to his death and the mother encouraging it. "Why me and not you?" the child innocently asks his mother, who answers that she will continue to have more children "for the sake of Palestine":

My mother dressed me in a strange belt (i.e., a suicide belt).
I asked her: 'What is this, mother?'
She said: 'I will put it on you and you will go to your death!'
I said to her: 'Mother, what have I done that you want me to die?'
She shed a tear that hurt my heart and said: 'The homeland needs you, son. Go and blow up the sons of Zion.'
I said to her: 'Why me and not you?'
She said: 'I will stay in order to give birth to more children for the sake of Palestine.'
I kissed her hand and said to her: 'Keep it up, mother, for you and for Palestine I will kill the impure and the damned.'"

The PA-funded educational magazine for children, Zayzafuna, published an essay earlier this year written by an 11 year-old lauding death as a Martyr:

"How do you know that you're a Palestinian?"
by Asil Khaled, 5th grade student - El-Bireh

"If you know that you were born with a death sentence, and if you go to your death without caring - then you're a Palestinian!
If your song is the song of Martyrdom (Shahada), and death, for you, is birth - then you're a Palestinian!
If you love death, and you say the Shahada [declaration] (i.e., the Islamic creed: "There is no God but Allah, Muhammad is Allah's messenger.") aloud - then you're a Palestinian!
If you've ever felt that you're an exploding body and that your soul will long one day to be a knight for the homeland - then you're a Palestinian!
If the stone is your weapon against oppression, and if those who hate [you] criticize your struggle - then you're a Palestinian!
If you have saturated the tree of the homeland with your free blood, with love, and have offered the remnants of your bodily parts as a bridge for those who are yet to come - then you're a Palestinian!
If you have shattered the chains, and carried the key to the house from which [your] grandparents were expelled - then you're a Palestinian!
If your wedding (i.e., a Martyr's funeral in Islamic tradition is a wedding to 72 Maidens of Paradise) was amidst a hail of bullets between the shoulders of friends [who carried your body], against the sound of tears mingled with joy (i.e., of achieving Martyrdom) and the searing pain of separation- then you're a Palestinian, and you're full of pride at being a Palestinian."

During the years of the Palestinian Authority terror campaign (the Intifada, 2000 - 2005), Palestinian Media Watch documented that the PA actively promoted Martyrdom (Shahada) as an ideal that children should strive for. Music videos for children indoctrinating them to see Martyrdom as "sweet" were broadcast hundreds of times on PA TV. In recent years, Martyrdom for children continues to be glorified by the PA in contexts for children but with lesser frequency.

The following are two examples of encouraging children to seek death as Martyrs for Allah, and one example of two girls embracing this ideal:

This video, designed to offset a child's natural fear of death, portrays Martyrdom as both heroic and tranquil. The film's hero, a teenager, leaves a farewell letter describing the death he is seeking as pleasurable: "Don't be sad my dear [father], and don't cry over my parting.
My dear father, for my country, I sacrificed myself.
With determination and desire, I will keep my promise.
How sweet is Martyrdom (Shahada), when I am embraced by you, my land!
How sweet is Martyrdom (Shahada), when I am embraced by you, my land!
My beloved, my mother, most dear to me,
be joyous over my blood, don't cry for me."

Muhammad Al-Dura (a boy who was killed in a televised crossfire) calls other children to follow him to a joyous child-Martyr Paradise. Al-Dura runs on the beach with his kite, and even goes to an amusement park: Text on screen: "I am waving to you, not in parting, but to say follow me. By Muhammad Al-Dura."
Narrator: "How sweet is the fragrance of the martyrs. How sweet is the fragrance of the earth, its thirst quenched by the gush of blood flowing from the youthful body. How sweet is the fragrance of the earth. The boy [Muhammad Al-Dura] cried: Oh father, till we meet, till we meet, father, till we meet, I will go with no fear and without crying. Host: "You described Martydrdom (Shahada) as something beautiful. Do you think it is beautiful?"
Walla, age 11: "Martyrdom (Shahada) is a very, very beautiful thing. Everyone yearns for Shahada. What could be sweeter than going to paradise?"
Host: "What is better, peace and full rights for the Palestinian people, or Shahada?"
Walla: "Shahada. I will achieve my rights after becoming a Shahida (Martyr)."
Host: "Ok, Yussra, would you agree with that?"
Yussra, age 11: "Of course; Shahada is sweet. We don't want this world, we want the Afterlife. We benefit not from this life, but from the Afterlife."
Host: "Do you actually love death? "
Yussra: "Death is not Shahada."
Host: "No, I mean the absence after death. "
Yussra: "No child loves death. The children of Palestine adopted the concept that Shahada is very good. Every Palestinian child, say someone aged 12, says: Oh Lord, I would like to become a Shahid."
Host: "We've got a call, Sabrine from Ramallah."
Sabrine (on telephone): "Ayyat Al-Akhras was 17 when she blew herself up -
Host: "Sabrine, are you for it or against it?"
Sabrine (on telephone): "Of course I support blowing up, it is our right."
Host: "Sabrine, now, is it natural that Ayyat Al-Akhras blows herself up?"
Sabrine (on telephone): "Of course it's natural."

PA daily encourages and supports Jihad and Martyrdom
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 3, 2012
Headline: "Smart leadership on the Jihad front"
"Allah's messenger [Muhammad] taught us that Jihad, with its conditions, its rules and its true motivations, is the pinnacle of worship of Allah, and therefore Muhammad's contemporaries strongly encouraged Jihad, resolve, sacrifice, and Martyrdom, as it says in the Hadith: 'The Jihad warrior is likened to one who unceasingly fasts and stands in prayer, not ceasing his prayer and his fast until the Jihad warrior returns.'"

Suicide terror & Shahada
People who see life as the supreme value have difficulty understanding the mind of the suicide terrorist. Why were so many Palestinians willing and eager to kill themselves in terror attacks against Israel?

In order to create willingness among the population to confront Israel violently, the PA took advantage of the ancient tradition in Islam, Shahada or Death for Allah, which mandates Muslims to aspire to die in combat for Islam. The PA told their people that this ancient tradition also applies to them in confrontation with Israel today.

This indoctrination began shortly after the start of the PA terror campaign (the "Intifada," 2000-2005) and continues today. The PA promotes Shahada as a mandatory religious Islamic duty, both for adults and children, promising great rewards.

Shahada (Death for Allah) promotion
Since 2000, the promotion of Shahada has been carried out by the Palestinian Authority through all the structures under its control, including media, school system, religion, culture, music and sports. Religious leaders have taught adults that Islam demands they seek death, while music videos have taught children that Shahada death “is sweet.” Shahada promotion still continues today.

In order to create willingness among the population to confront Israel violently, the PA presents Shahada - Death for Allah - as a religious Islamic obligation. This indoctrination began shortly after the start of the PA terror campaign (the "Intifada," 2000-2005).
Palestinians are told that Allah desires all of them – men, women and children – to seek death as martyrs, and that it is a privilege to be worthy of dying for Allah. One cleric even warned that if they didn’t seek Death for Allah their Muslim faith was deficient:
Ahmed Abdel Razek, PA Cleric:
“The believer was created to know his Lord - to follow Islam… to be a Shahid (Martyr) or intend to be one. If the believer doesn't hope for Shahada (Death for Allah), he will die a Jahiliya death (without faith). We must aim for Shahada and request it from Allah. If we truthfully ask for it, [Allah] will grant us its rewards, even if we die in bed.”

Fatah official is proud of Palestinian women who carry out suicide attacks and celebrate the death of Martyrs
Source: Palestinian TV (Fatah), May 15, 2012
Interview with Abbas Zaki, member of the Fatah Central Committee, on the PA TV program Palestine This Morning:
Zaki: "Actually we started a process of organization and precise reconnaissance, in order to start the Fatah revolution, in January '65. From then until today, 48 years of rivers of blood, sweat and tears, we have [had] ups and downs, but the enemy feels, each day that it is regressing. Each period we use a different form of struggle: At one time [we struggle] with weapons, at another time – stones, another time – empty stomachs (i.e., hunger strikes), such that we will defeat this executioner in our battle. I believe that the memory, the love of Palestine and the geography of Palestine still lives in the mind of this tremendous nation. The children, of whom it was said that they would not know this land – they now know it better than the scholars and the adults, and they make sacrifices [for it]. The women carry out Martyrdom-seeking operations (i.e., suicide attacks), and utter sounds of joy over the Martyr, and sing to the groom (i.e., the Martyr who marries the 72 virgins in Paradise). This shows what a right that has claimants is, and that the Palestinian people is ready to sacrifice until this black day (Nakba day) is erased through its struggle…"

PA official promotes Martyrdom-death: “Either we live in dignity… or we return as Martyrs”
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 9, 2012
"Director-General of the Palestinian Ministry of Culture, Abd Al-Nasser Salah, called upon international organizations, foremost among them the Red Cross, to protect the Palestinian prisoners… He emphasized, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, the Writers' Union, and all our nation's intellectuals, inside the country and outside of it, that the heroic prisoners have taken their lives in their hands in order that we may live in dignity; [they] have sacrificed their best years and their future so that our people can taste the taste of freedom. He added that the time has come for us to give them a little of what we owe them, by coming to their aid and standing unified around their legitimate demands to live in freedom and dignity, because they are seekers of justice, freedom, and peace. The poet [and Director-General of the Palestinian Ministry of Culture] Abd Al-Nasser emphasized that the courageous prisoners have resolved to continue with their battle under the slogan, 'Either we will live in dignity, without oppression and humiliation, or we will return to our families as Martyrs (Shahids), fragrant with the perfume of Paradise.'"

Source: Palestinian TV (Fatah), Dec. 30, 2011
Show host welcomes the music group:
“We welcome you on behalf of the [PA] Ministry of Culture.”

Band sings the song “Intifada Anthem”:
“This is our country's word in the face of death:
Our language is fire, and the revolution is the roof of our house.
We sing it while erasing the step of the thief (i.e., Israel).
This blood is the voice.
We have gathered the blood from our first wound.
We escorted the Martyr of the land to his wedding [to 72 Dark-Eyed maidens], and held a pre-wedding party for our female Martyr (who became one of the Dark-Eyed).
We said to the little one: 'Grow up', as we declared our Intifada.
Our country is the sea, the threshing floor and the clay houses.
Our country is Al-Ram, Rama and the Ramin plain (note: Rama is in northern Israel), the Acre fortress, the sun of the Carmel and Haifa (note: All in northern Israel), and Gaza, which responds to death with the knife.

Band sings the song “Teach us”:
Teach us how to make torches from the darkness of night.
Teach us how to get jasmine from the wounds of the heart.
Teach us how to turn heartbeats into bombs.
Teach us how to eat our bread which is drenched with blood, that we may live.
Not that we may live but that we may continue to fight.”

Note: The anthem originally aired Dec. 2, 2011 and was rebroadcast on Dec. 30, 2011.

Song directs children to violence and Martyrdom-death
Source: Palestinian TV (Fatah), Feb. 24, 2012
"Don't cry, Palestine, stand tall for your heroes. Let the cowards [Israel] see that your kids didn't surrender to fear in the midst of horror. Oh children of the stones, teach the sinners [Israel] that shooting doesn't scare you, that your dignity is preserved, and that death for the sake of the country is not terror.
Terror is the occupier and his helpers, not those who saw and tasted death but were not humiliated, and not the child who nurses fear and expulsion, yet surrenders not. Girl sings Intifada song about the "Martyr who loved death," PA TV host prefers song about life

I am the last will of the Martyr
who loved death upon the soil of the homeland.
My voice refuses to be silent.
I am the sister of the one
who adorned herself and girded herself with death.
I am the voice of the stone and the tree, the bleeding wounded."

After interviewing other children, the host turned to the girl a second time and asked her to sing a different song:
PA TV host: "Bravo, our friend Bara'a; that was a beautiful song.
We want to hear a song full of life and vitality, because we want to live. We want a beautiful life, we want always to call for all that adorns our life. We want to forget about death for a little while and distance ourselves far from death."

This charm caused the audience to cry, as the children's performance was accompanied by the playing of nationalistic songs."

Increased allowance to families of Martyrs
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 13, 2012
"The Prime Minister [Fayyad] and some members of the [PA] leadership shared the meal breaking the fast last night with hundreds of families of Martyrs, as part of a mass communal meal organized by the National Association of Families of the Martyrs of Palestine, to break the Ramadan fast … In a statement to Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Fayyad said that the meal breaking the fast, which has become an annual event, is a worthy annual tradition, an event of which we are proud, and an opportunity to recall and commemorate the heroes who gave their lives readily for the sake of the liberty of the homeland… [Executive Secretary of the National Association of Families of the Martyrs of Palestine, Muhammad] Sbeihat drew attention to a string of achievements and demands that had been met, among them an increase in allowances (Arabic: mukhassas) to Martyrs’ families, that the Prime Minister approved, so that a Martyr’s family, especially [if the Martyr] was married, now receives an allowance that is reasonable and acceptable. He noted that 17,0000 families of Martyrs and injured in the homeland, and 12,000 families in the Diaspora, were benefitting from these [financial] supplements, that in the Diaspora had jumped from $2 million [per month] to $4.8 million, in other words, an increase of $33 million per year in allowances. In total, the supplements [for families] in the homeland and abroad came to $75 million [per year]."

PA Mufti glorifies terrorists as "noble souls"
Source: Palestinian TV (Fatah), June 6, 2012
PA TV religious program Religion and the World
Topic: The Martyrs (Shahids) who had been buried in numbered graves in Israel and whose bodies were returned to the PA.
Muhammad Hussein, Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories: "We ask of Allah that he let them dwell with the prophets, the speakers of truth, the Martyrs (Shahids), and the pious… Our Palestinian people received these bodies with great honor. The President's Office, and of course the President [Abbas] at its head, received these Martyrs with great honor, and likewise the entire Palestinian leadership and our people, in Ramallah and in all the regions. Every mayor came from his region, along with a group of residents of the region. They took these bodies, celebrated [their arrival] and made a large and dignified reception for them – each Martyr in his region. In truth, this is proof of our Palestinian people's interest in its Martyr sons and its prisoner sons. We say that Allah will have mercy on the Martyrs, because they died for the sake of tremendous goals. Preserving this homeland, and preserving the dignity of the Palestinian people are among the most important aims for which they died. They gave the most exalted thing that a person can give in this world – life. Giving one's life is the greatest giving. They gave up their souls. These noble souls were given for the sake of Allah, for the sake of dignity, for the sake of the homeland, for the sake of all the important values which are embodied in the struggle, the Jihad and the sacrifice of the Palestinian people."

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how Israel can live in peace with Hamas. I see the usual suspects screaming about Israel so perhaps one of you, quoting from the Charter below, can explain it to me. Alternatively, using the Islamic holy books but rmembering that it is the final comments of the koran, the hadith etc that are the ones to be used.

THE COVENANT OF THE HAMAS - MAIN POINTS
=======================================
The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement was issued on August
18, 1988. The Islamic Resistance Movement, also known as the HAMAS,
is an extremist fundamentalist Islamic organization operating in the
territories under Israeli control. Its Covenant is a comprehensive
manifesto comprised of 36 separate articles, all of which promote the
basic HAMAS goal of destroying the State of Israel through Jihad
(Islamic Holy War). The following are excerpts of the HAMAS
Covenant:
Goals of the HAMAS:
-----------------
'The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian
movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is
Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of
Palestine.' (Article 6)
On the Destruction of Israel:
-----------------------------
'Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will
obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.' (Preamble)
The Exclusive Moslem Nature of the Area:
'The land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf [Holy Possession]
consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgment Day. No one
can renounce it or any part, or abandon it or any part of it.'
(Article 11)
'Palestine is an Islamic land... Since this is the case, the
Liberation of Palestine is an individual duty for every Moslem
wherever he may be.' (Article 13)
The Call to Jihad:
------------------
'The day the enemies usurp part of Moslem land, Jihad becomes the
individual duty of every Moslem. In the face of the Jews' usurpation,
it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised.' (Article 15)
'Ranks will close, fighters joining other fighters, and masses
everywhere in the Islamic world will come forward in response to the
call of duty, loudly proclaiming: 'Hail to Jihad!'. This cry will
reach the heavens and will go on being resounded until liberation is
achieved, the invaders vanquished and Allah's victory comes about.'
(Article 33)
Rejection of a Negotiated Peace Settlement:
-------------------------------------------
'[Peace] initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and
international conferences are in contradiction to the principles of
the Islamic Resistance Movement... Those conferences are no more than
a means to appoint the infidels as arbitrators in the lands of
Islam... There is no solution for the Palestinian problem except by
Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are but a
waste of time, an exercise in futility.' (Article 13)
Condemnation of the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty:
----------------------------------------------
'Egypt was, to a great extent, removed from the circle of struggle
[against Zionism] through the treacherous Camp David Agreement. The
Zionists are trying to draw other Arab countries into similar
agreements in order to bring them outside the circle of struggle.
..Leaving the circle of struggle against Zionism is high treason,
and cursed be he who perpetrates such an act.' (Article 32)
Anti-Semitic Incitement:
------------------------
'The Day of Judgment will not come about until Moslems fight Jews and
kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the
rocks and trees will cry out: 'O Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind
me, come and kill him.' (Article 7)
'The enemies have been scheming for a long time ... and have
accumulated huge and influential material wealth. With their money,
they took control of the world media... With their money they stirred
revolutions in various parts of the globe... They stood behind the
French Revolution, the Communist Revolution and most of the
revolutions we hear about... With their money they formed secret
organizations - such as the Freemasons, Rotary Clubs and the Lions -
which are spreading around the world, in order to destroy societies
and carry out Zionist interests... They stood behind World War I ...
and formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the
world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge
financial gains... There is no war going on anywhere without them
having their finger in it.' (Article 22)
'Zionism scheming has no end, and after Palestine, they will covet
expansion from the Nile to the Euphrates River When they have
finished digesting the area on which they have laid their hand, they
will look forward to more expansion. Their scheme has been laid out
in the 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion'.' (Article 32)
'The HAMAS regards itself the spearhead and the vanguard of the
circle of struggle against World Zionism... Islamic groups all over
the Arab world should also do the same, since they are best equipped
for their future role in the fight against the warmongering Jews.'
(Article 32)

Nothing like unbiased info from people who work to keep the Israeli image, no matter their folly's clean.

"Founded in 1996, Palestinian Media Watch is an Israeli research institute that studies Palestinian society from a broad range of perspectives by monitoring and analyzing the Palestinian Authority through its media and schoolbooks. PMW’s major focus is on the messages that the Palestinian leaders, from the Palestinian Authority, Fatah and Hamas, send to the population through the broad range of institutions and infrastructures they control.

"The Generals Son" Miko Peled..

Excerpt: " Category Archives: THE GENERAL’S SON by Miko Peled
March 30, 2011
My Speech for Palestine Awareness Week at SDSU.
By Miko Peled

I want to begin by thanking the members of AIPAC the Jewish Zionist community who are here tonight. I am glad that they decided to set aside time to express solidarity with the people of Palestine. I know that you will listen to the tapes and view the recordings of my remarks tonight and you will study them well and hopefully you will realize that you are supporting evil. You see, I too came from a deeply Zionist background, far more Zionist and Jewish than most of you here tonight. My grandfather was a signer on the Israeli declaration of independence, and my father, a general, one of the giants who planned and executed Israel’s most definitive military victories, namely 1948 and 1967. So I know what you were taught and I know what you think. But its time to sweep away the Zionist myths and uncover the truth so that we may all finally live in peace.

The myths I will address tonight are the three most common myths:
1. The myth of 1948.
2. The myth of the existential threat of 1967.
3. The myth of the Jewish democracy.
I want to read to you a passage from my upcoming book The General’s Son, and I quote: (Growing up we were taught to believe that the Arabs had left Eretz Israel partly on their own and partially at the directive of their so called leaders, and that therefore taking their land and homes was morally OK. It never occurred to us that even if they did leave willingly, we had no right to prohibit their return. But then Israeli historians had found that what Palestinians have been saying for decades was true.) end quote. In other words when Palestinians claim something is true we doubt it but when Israelis claim it themselves, well now that is a different story. So Israeli historians found that Israel and Palestine the exact same place. But when Israel was created it was created on the ruins of Palestine.

Now, although Palestine was not a state yet, it would have become one had it not been so thoroughly destroyed. Palestine had bustling cities where commerce and trade were taking place, they had a middle class, they had judges and scholars and a rich political life and indeed they had culture and a unique identity that set them apart from the rest of the Arab world. What the Palestinians did not have, the one thing in which they did not invest was a military. And while they constituted the vast majority of the population, when the Jewish militias attacked, they were helpless.

The Jewish community in Palestine at the time was small, numbering less than half a million people but it had developed its own state like institutions separate from those of the Palestinians. Based on the principle of Hafrada, or segregation, they had developed their own schools, a nationalized health care system, a quasi government and a strong, well trained militia with young men like my father who were dedicated to creating a Jewish state in Palestine disregarding the existence of the vast majority of the population who were, Palestinians.

In 1948 the Jewish militia became the Israeli army but between the end of 1947 and the beginning of 1949 they destroyed close to 500 towns and villages and exiled close to 800,000 Palestinians who to this day are not permitted to return. So, it turns out that the creation of Israel had not, after all, been a haphazard fight in which the Arabs fled their homes due to the directives of their own leaders. It had been a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing by the Jewish militia involving massacres, terrorism, and the wholesale looting of an entire nation.

My mother remembers the homes of the Palestinians who were forced to leave West Jerusalem. She herself was offered one of those beautiful spacious homes but refused. She could not bear the thought of living in the home of a family that was forced out and now lives in a refugee camp. She said the coffee was still warm on the tables as the soldiers came in and began the looting. She remembers the truckloads of loot, taken by the Israeli soldiers from these homes."

Oh, Gillian, as usual, without mind of her own; just posting tirades of Hasbara pamphlets. I must admit that I stopped reading her "comments" (although it is not polite to skip a comment in a forum, I know - my momma told me!).

US media have a grave problem when a simple time-line contradicts their reports.

Anyone who relies on US msm for information on the relentless abuse and persecution of Palestinians, is being deliberately misled and deceived. Israel is not an innocent, blameless victim, in fact, rather the reverse.
The US gov. could stop this slaughter with one little sentence: "Quit the murder of unarmed civilians or forfeit all US tax dollars.

When will the US gov. end this alliance with evil? The US gov. must dismantle and discard the failed zionist project and return to a path of moral and ethical values we in US can be proud of.

@Henriette Matthijissen: You don't care who started it? If it were your little baby with the skin burnt off and the little one's innards exposed to the world (the ultimate Israeli obscenity) could you shake off some of your selfish apathy and just for the human experience of it all, would you try caring then?

Tell me, Henriette, can a child still counting it's time on earth in months, what can a baby do to start a massacre?

Or if out of the 75 dead Palestinians, one were your mother, your husband, your seven children and two grandchildren were killed by United States tax dollars to terrorists, could that snap you out of your selfish lethergy? Do you think you'd want justice, or wouldn't it matter, since nothing would bring them back.

I guess you haven't noticed, but Israel is ethnically cleansing the Palestinians from their generationally occupied homes and homeland, in other words dear Henri, there is already an on-going holocaust in Israel, and it is the Israelis doing the torture, murder, bombing, imprisoning, starvation, forbidding medications, allowing people to bleed to death while an ambulance awaits permission from the occupiers to take the wounded for care.

I think some of you have misinterpretted Henriette's words: "Personally I do not care who started it, just end it! We have not learned anything from history. We do not need another Holocaust on innocent people!"

Henriette is one of my online friends . . . and there is NOTHING apathetic about her.

Having participated in many of these Israel/Palestine postings, I know that (often) the excuse for the need for retaliation is based upon propaganda -- biased and inaccurate, self-congratulatory versions of past history.

My read of her remarks?

That we can hash, re-hash and re-re-hash the history . . . and then, argue about the poster's "take," or the validity of the sequence of events (or the validity of the source for that information) . . . but in the end . . .

It's already happened; and, as such, cannot be taken back. So what is the point of distracting ourselves from the central issue, by arguing with apologists (who are already set in their ways, and will respond with unnecessarily long copy/pasting of paragraphs of others' opinions that will agree with their own)?

Just move forward and GIT 'ER DONE!!

This may come as a shock to some of you, but historically, as time has passed and documents have been de-classified, much of the history we've accepted from our "enlightenment" through education of our countries' history, was merely a whitewashed myth, perpetrated by those in government who wished to alter true motives -- which, when revealed, did not portray the protagonists as philanthropic or humanitarian.

GREED, repayment of promises to supportive outside interests, personal gain and the lust for power have been, most historically, the premises for these unfortunate choices to kill, instead of reason. (And, mind you, most of these decision-makers' lives were not endangered by their choices to engage in destruction of lives -- most usually, of civilians.)

Wake up!

Thanks Carole for taking the lead here in speaking up for Henriette, when I saw the reaction it was way past my bedtime so I had intented to comment on it today. Perhaps her choice of words was not ideal, but those of us who know her will not misinterpret her.
The same goes for Abdessalam whose comment on Freyas story was responded to by Pam W. in an equally inappropriate way.(http://www.care2.com/news/member/739002257/3489269) I think she did not even read it in full..

Who cares who started it? There are 2 opponents in every conflict (at least). That means your side has to be right and the other wrong, your side has to win and not lose....and the same goes for the other side regarding you.

As soon as anyone takes any side in a conflict, you are part of the conflict BANG and you have an opponent.

Which is why any wise mother when faced with her 2 squabbling children knows it is fatal to take sides. The instant she does that she creates an opponent of the other child.

Just look at the similarities here: "He hit me first!" "He hit me 5 times, I only hit him twice!" "Nobody likes him anyway!" All are used as justifications for doing something to anther person.

@Carrie B at 8:56 p.m: I find it interesting Carrie, that you can easily spot Palestinian propaganda, while the "by deception thou shalt make war" crowd's brainwashing fills your head with bold lies, fabrications, lies of omission, buzzwords, etc. The hasbara crowds your gray matter so that there is no room left for critical or logical thinking.

As this is one of the few sites that even acknowledge that there is also a Palestinian narrative, I commend Gillian for presenting both sides in this nightmare of injustice.

. There are hundreds, if not thousands of web sites devoted to Jewish perspective, I find it incomprehensible that you object to hearing about the Christian and Muslim gentiles, living under decades of brutal occupation, a air, land and sea blockade, and the insecurity of having the US tax funded bombs dropped on them at Israeli whim.

Jews are not the victims in this disaster of their making, the are the perpetrators of massive crimes against humanity. Open your eyes, read a little, and unless you are a racist who believes that Jewish lives are more valuable than the lives of the rest of humanity, discover the truth for yourself.

I'm posting to apologize for my hasty, thoughtless remarks and rudeness. There is no excuse for my tirade at you - I get so frustrated at my lack of ability to effect change.
Justice for Palestine is my passion, I'm 64 and I've promised myself that I will live to see justice for Palestinians.

Please accept my apology Henriette, I'm so disappointed in myself for scapegoating you. I've reread your comment and I think you are saying - it isn't important who did what to who first, what matters is that this evil is ended so that peace can reign.
Again, I'm so sorry if my remarks hurt or angered you. kbates

The existence of the IDF on the Palestinian land , occupying GAZA WEST BANK EAST JERUSALEM ON 1967 is a clear answer who started the violence from the early start since 1947 by expelling the Falestinians from thier land under shouting.
On Daily basis the IDF violate and , kill, murder civilians, destruct trees fields and houses in both GAZA and West Bank and Jerusalem.
THe IDF destruct buildings over the children and women while sleeping on nights, destruct schools, health centers, shout fishermen , farmers, and block siege on GAZA putting 1.7 million in big prison... prevents the rebuilding of GAZA which destructed by the IDFG attack on 2008 - 2009 .
Such violence must be ended , siege to be finished and palestinians to have thier rights to live on thier home land.
Enough support for killing and murdering to palestinians.

What an attempt to white-wash Hamas who don't hide that they attacked Israel. Just another piece of dawah, justifying crimes of Islamist militants.

Hamas was bombing Israel for too long. That bombing did not start last week, it was going on for a long time. Hamas bombing originates from populated areas, and their endangering civilians sometimes causes those civilians to be harmed.

But blame on those killed lies solely with Hamas.

Stop the Blank Check to Israel
A campaign to stop the $8,000,000.00 per day in aid to Israel, from USA tax dollars. Especially since this aid is used to occupy & oppress the Palestinian people & the very real need of our American tax dollars for domestic needs. Charity begins at home.
