Here is the estimate of the tons of DU the US used in Iraq: 1000-2000 tons - more than three times the amount used in the first Gulf War...only this time it was primarily spread in Iraq's cities, not on the battlefield.

Thanks goes to Carol for finding this story! Watch the video and "see" the truth!

Four hours later, Herbert Reed will swallow another 15 mg of morphine to cut the pain clenching every part of his body. He will do it twice more before the day is done.

Since he left a bombed-out train depot in Iraq, his gums bleed. There is more blood in his urine, and still more in his stool. Bright light hurts his eyes. A tumor has been removed from his thyroid. Rashes erupt everywhere, itching so badly they seem to live inside his skin. Migraines cleave his skull. His joints ache, grating like door hinges in need of oil.

There is something massively wrong with Herbert Reed, though no one is sure what it is. He believes he knows the cause, but he cannot convince anyone caring for him that the military's new favorite weapon has made him terrifyingly sick.

In the sprawling bureaucracy of the Department of Veterans Affairs, he has many caretakers. An internist, a neurologist, a pain-management specialist, a psychologist, an orthopedic surgeon and a dermatologist. He cannot function without his stupefying arsenal of medications, but they exact a high price.

"I'm just a zombie walking around," he says.

Reed believes depleted uranium has contaminated him and his life. He now walks point in a vitriolic war over the Pentagon's arsenal of it -- thousands of shells and hundreds of tanks coated with the metal that is radioactive, chemically toxic, and nearly twice as dense as lead.

A shell coated with depleted uranium pierces a tank like a hot knife through butter, exploding on impact into a charring inferno. As tank armor, it repels artillery assaults. It also leaves behind a fine radioactive dust with a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

Depleted uranium is the garbage left from producing enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and energy plants. It is 60 percent as radioactive as natural uranium. The United States has an estimated 1.5 billion pounds of it, sitting in hazardous waste storage sites across the country. Meaning it is plentiful and cheap as well as highly effective.

Reed says he unknowingly breathed DU dust while living with his unit in Samawah, Iraq. He was med-evaced out in July 2003, nearly unable to walk because of lightning-strike pains from herniated discs in his spine. Then began a strange series of symptoms he'd never experienced in his previously healthy life.

At Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C, he ran into a buddy from his unit. And another, and another, and in the tedium of hospital life between doctor visits and the dispensing of meds, they began to talk.

"We all had migraines. We all felt sick," Reed says. "The doctors said, 'It's all in your head.' "

Then the medic from their unit showed up. He too, was suffering. That made eight sick soldiers from the 442nd Military Police, an Army National Guard unit made up of mostly cops and correctional officers from the New York area.

But the medic knew something the others didn't. Dutch marines had taken over the abandoned train depot dubbed Camp Smitty, which was surrounded by tank skeletons, unexploded ordnance and shell casings. They'd brought radiation-detection devices. The readings were so hot, the Dutch set up camp in the middle of the desert rather than live in the station ruins.

"We got on the Internet," Reed said, "and we started researching depleted uranium."

Then they contacted The New York Daily News, which paid for sophisticated urine tests available only overseas.

Then they hired a lawyer.

Reed, Gerard Matthew, Raymond Ramos, Hector Vega, Augustin Matos, Anthony Yonnone, Jerry Ojeda and Anthony Phillip all have depleted uranium in their urine, according to tests done in December 2003, while they bounced for months between Walter Reed and New Jersey's Fort Dix medical center, seeking relief that never came.

The analyses were done in Germany, by a Frankfurt professor who developed a depleted uranium test with Randall Parrish, a professor of isotope geology at the University of Leicester in Britain.

The veterans, using their positive results as evidence, have sued the U.S. Army, claiming officials knew the hazards of depleted uranium, but concealed the risks.

The Department of Defense says depleted uranium is powerful and safe, and not that worrisome.

Four of the highest-registering samples from Frankfurt were sent to the VA. Those results were negative, Reed said. "Their test just isn't as sophisticated," he said. "And when we first asked to be tested, they told us there wasn't one. They've lied to us all along."

The VA's testing methodology is safe and accurate, the agency says. More than 2,100 soldiers from the current war have asked to be tested; only eight had DU in their urine, the VA said.

The term depleted uranium is linguistically radioactive. Simply uttering the words can prompt a reaction akin to preaching atheism at tent revival. Heads shake, eyes roll, opinions are yelled from all sides.

"The Department of Defense takes the position that you can eat it for breakfast and it poses no threat at all," said Steve Robinson of the National Gulf War Resource Center, which helps veterans with various problems, including navigating the labyrinth of VA health care. "Then you have far-left groups that ... declare it a crime against humanity."

Several countries use it as weaponry, including Britain, which fired it during the 2003 Iraq invasion.

An estimated 286 tons of DU munitions were fired by the United States in Iraq and Kuwait in 1991. An estimated 130 tons were shot toppling Saddam Hussein.

Depleted uranium can enter the human body by inhalation, the most dangerous method; by ingesting contaminated food or eating with contaminated hands; by getting dust or debris in an open wound, or by being struck by shrapnel, which often is not removed because doing so would be more dangerous than leaving it.

Inhaled, it can lodge in the lungs. As with imbedded shrapnel, this is doubly dangerous -- not only are the particles themselves physically destructive, they emit radiation.

A moderate voice on the divisive DU spectrum belongs to Dan Fahey, a doctoral student at the University of California at Berkeley, who has studied the issue for years and also served in the Gulf War before leaving the military as a conscientious objector.

"I've been working on this since '93 and I've just given up hope," he said. "I've spoken to successive federal committees and elected officials ... who then side with the Pentagon. Nothing changes."

At the other end are a collection of conspiracy-theorists and internet proselytizers who say using such weapons constitutes genocide. Two of the most vocal opponents recently suggested that a depleted-uranium missile, not a hijacked jetliner, struck the Pentagon in 2001.

"The bottom line is it's more hazardous than the Pentagon admits," Fahey said, "but it's not as hazardous as the hard-line activist groups say it is. And there's a real dearth of information about how DU affects humans."

There are several studies on how it affects animals, though their results are not, of course, directly applicable to humans. Military research on mice shows that depleted uranium can enter the bloodstream and come to rest in bones, the brain, kidneys and lymph nodes. Other research in rats shows that DU can result in cancerous tumors and genetic mutations, and pass from mother to unborn child, resulting in birth defects.

Iraqi doctors reported significant increases in birth defects and childhood cancers after the 1991 invasion.

Iraqi authorities "found that uranium, which affected the blood cells, had a serious impact on health: The number of cases of leukemia had increased considerably, as had the incidence of fetal deformities," the U.N. reported.

Depleted uranium can also contaminate soil and water, and coat buildings with radioactive dust, which can by carried by wind and sandstorms.

In 2005, the U.N. Environmental Program identified 311 polluted sites in Iraq. Cleaning them will take at least $40 million and several years, the agency said. Nothing can start until the fighting stops.

Fifteen years after it was first used in battle, there is only one U.S. government study monitoring veterans exposed to depleted uranium. Number of soldiers in the survey: 32. Number of soldiers in both Iraq wars: more than 900,000.

The study group's size is controversial -- far too small, say experts including Fahey -- and so are the findings of the voluntary, Baltimore-based study. It has found "no clinically significant" health effects from depleted uranium exposure in the study subjects, according to its researchers.

Critics say the VA has downplayed participants' health problems, including not reporting one soldier who developed cancer, and another who developed a bone tumor.

So for now, depleted uranium falls into the quagmire of Gulf War Syndrome, from which no treatment has emerged despite the government's spending of at least $300 million.

About 30 percent of the 700,000 men and women who served in the first Gulf War still suffer a baffling array of symptoms very similar to those reported by Reed's unit.

Depleted uranium has long been suspected as a possible contributor to Gulf War Syndrome, and in the mid-90s, veterans helped push the military into tracking soldiers exposed to it.

But for all their efforts, what they got in the end was a questionnaire dispensed to homeward-bound soldiers asking about mental health, nightmares, losing control, exposure to dangerous and radioactive chemicals.

But, the veterans persisted, how would soldiers know they'd been exposed? Radiation is invisible, tasteless, and has no smell. And what exhausted, homesick, war-addled soldier would check a box that would only send him or her to a military medical center to be poked and prodded and questioned and tested?

It will take years to determine how depleted uranium affected soldiers from this war. After Vietnam, veterans, in numbers that grew with the passage of time, complained of joint aches, night sweats, bloody feces, migraine headaches, unexplained rashes and violent behavior; some developed cancers.

It took more than 25 years for the Pentagon to acknowledge that Agent Orange -- a corrosive defoliant used to melt the jungles of Vietnam and flush out the enemy -- was linked to those sufferings.

It took 40 years for the military to compensate sick World War II vets exposed to massive blasts of radiation during tests of the atomic bomb. In 2002, Congress voted to not let that happen again.

It established the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses -- composed of scientists, physicians and veterans' advocates. It reports to the secretary of Veterans Affairs. Its mandate is to judge all research and all efforts to treat Gulf War Syndrome patients against a single standard: Have sick soldiers been made better?

The answer, according to the committee, is no.

"Regrettably, after four years of operation neither the Committee nor (the) VA can report progress toward this goal," stated its December 2005 report. "Research has not produced effective treatments for these conditions nor shown that existing treatments are significantly effective."

And so time marches on, as do soldiers going to, and returning from, the deserts of Iraq.

Herbert Reed is an imposing man, broad shouldered and tall. He strides into the VA Medical Center in the Bronx with the presence of a cop or a soldier. Since the Vietnam War, he has been both.

His hair is perfect, his shirt spotless, his jeans sharply creased. But there is something wrong, a niggling imperfection made more noticeable by a bearing so disciplined. It is a limp -- more like a hitch in his get-along. It is the only sign, albeit a tiny one, that he is extremely sick.

Even sleep offers no release. He dreams of gunfire and bombs and soldiers who scream for help. No matter how hard he tries, he never gets there in time.

At 54, he is a veteran of two wars and a 20-year veteran of the New York Police Department, where he last served as an assistant warden at the Riker's Island prison. He was in perfect health, he says, before being deployed to Iraq.

According to military guidelines, he should have heard the words depleted uranium long before he ended up at Walter Reed. He should have been trained about its dangers, and how to avoid prolonged exposure to its toxicity and radioactivity. He says he didn't get anything of the kind. Neither did other reservists and National Guard soldiers called up for the current war, according to veterans' groups.

Reed and the seven brothers from his unit hate what has happened to them, and they speak of it at public seminars and in politicians' offices. It is something no VA doctor can explain; something that leaves them feeling like so many spent shell rounds, kicked to the side of battle.

But for every outspoken soldier like them, there are silent veterans like Raphael Naboa, an Army artillery scout who served 11 months in the northern Sunni Triangle, only to come home and fall apart. Some days he feels fine. "Some days I can't get out of bed," he said from his home in Colorado.

Now 29, he's had growths removed from his brain. He has suffered a small stroke -- one morning he was shaving, having put down the razor to rinse his face. In that moment, he blacked out and pitched over. "Just as quickly as I lost consciousness, I regained it," he said. "Except I couldn't move the right side of my body." After about 15 minutes, the paralysis ebbed.

He has mentioned depleted uranium to his VA doctors, who say he suffers from a series of "non-related conditions." He knows he was exposed to DU. "A lot of guys went trophy-hunting, grabbing bayonets, helmets, stuff that was in the vehicles that were destroyed by depleted uranium. My guys were rooting around in it. I was trying to get them out of the vehicles."

No one in the military talked to him about depleted uranium, he said. His knowledge, like Reed's, is self-taught from the internet. Unlike Reed, he has not gone to war over it. He doesn't feel up to the fight. There is no known cure for what ails him, and so no possible victory in battle.

He'd really just like to feel normal again. And he knows of others who feel the same.

"I was an artillery scout, these are folks who are in pretty good shape. Your Rangers, your Special Forces guys, they're in as good as shape as a professional athlete.

"Then we come back and we're all sick."

They feel like men who once were warriors and now are old before their time, with no hope for relief from a multitude of miseries that has no name.

Thank you, Michael . . . but, I was astonished myself to learn how much information was available. Of course, one would never think to look, because there was relatively no press coverage.

People, wake up! Even your press is being controlled (or voluntarily being led).

If you hear about something new, and you read the facts presented, and feel sure it's true -- TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THE MEDIA IS PURPOSELY NOT COVERING IT!

And, if you know, and choose to keep it to yourself -- God help your conscience.

Nasty stuff - DU as an invisible weapon and killer. Soldiers have become "expendable", tossed away.
There is no cure for the exposure to DU.

I was astonished this long text of information about what this world is becoming...and there will be no exit because all is controlled and everything is controlzble...
and press makes us focus on certain things so we forget there is more important...i sometimes wonder what would people do if they knew all...

Thanks Carole for the forward, and thanks goes out to Michael for another good story.Jim, right on, got the real truth sad for all of our soldiers and everyone else that is exposed. I am in awe as to how far out of hand this has gotten, to the point where Jim says "there is no cure" it's a scary world out here. I wish everyone in the Universe many blessings of protection against any harm that has been put on them by mans own hands. Praise to the higher power! These people that can do these harmful things to our planet and not think of the consequences need to think twice about what will happen, even to their own children & grandchildren, they will be exposed, are they stupid?..Damn fools, what have they done to us all? really makes you wonder how these people got the power to use us like guinea pigs...Are we their puppets?..I say to unite as a country and get rid of the idiots and put real people in office who live by the Constitution!

"Metal of Dishonor" - Depleted Uranium
How the Pentagon Radiates Soldiers & Civilians with DU Weapons
[A book and a video]

"The fascist clique that is presiding over the Iraq War, clearly seeks to perpetrate widespread Eugenics-inspired depopulation of Iraq."

"It is apparent that a Eugenics-inspired megalomaniacal fascist clique seeks to further make Iran a toxic nuclear wasteland."

The USA Army doesnt possess or use/d radiation detectorsin Irak!!??.

This is terrible and I can imagine Army Officials will be doing everything to avoid this getting "popular"media coverage not least due to the issue of compensation!.

I think of friends living in clusters around the country struggling with the after-effects of agent orange, usually wiht none but themselves and fellow sufferers believing them... no real help for them either. Go back in history to the abandoned soldiers after every war... we all know about being doomed to repeat history that we don't know, and yet so few ever know... ironically by not knowing, they spread their ignorance to the next generation, by convincing them that there isn't anything to know! And those who don't want anyone to know what is really going on in the world feed that illusion daily... what's in the news today about some movie star going to jail is the reality for too many. I think it is nothing more than the modern give the "circuses" to the masses to keep them occupied and ignorant. Or Christians to the lions? Maybe not only is there no cure for Uranium exposure, there's no cure for human apathy?

AAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!! What the hell is wrong with Congress and even the Presidential Candiates??? SOMEONE TELL ME WHY NONE OF THEM ARE RAISING THE ALARM ABOUT THIS??? (this time I am yelling because I am so bloody angry!)

I know the dangers of this stuff; I heard horror tales from troops I know as well as my husband! And he walked around in the stuff the entire time he was in Afghanistan. The VA budget is not even prepared to handle this.

Thank you Michael, and Carole, you are both wonderful for taking the time to dig and find these stories. Our troops should NEVER be used for this purpose, and unfortunately, since there are no elections that cover EVERY member of Congress so we could toss the lot of them out and start over, we are stuck with those who aren't speaking to this issue.

Where is John Murtha on this? Where are the others like Speaker Pelosi, and Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, or for that matter, Senator Murray (on the Armned Forces Committee) and Senator Cantwell. This is so SHAMEFUL and I know the Founders would be astonished, particularly George Washington. I recognize that i have brought this up before, however the book I am nearly done with on what our Founders would do relative to some of the "current" issues we face as a nation, the one thing they would not do is tolerate ANY member of the Army/Navy (military) being homeless or without the care that s/he needs after a war!!! It is their blood being spilled in OUR name . . . and that's the worst thing of all this mess.

Bless you Michael, and Bless you Carole! I thank you from the bottom of my heart and continuously encourage my husband and others to get checked for their exposure to all of this. The cruelty of it is overwhelming! NONE of the Candidates deserve our vote unless they are willing to bring this forward and make it known.

I have not ever been so disappointed in a CoC who refuses the Country the time to say last good-byes of fallen heroes at Dover; not ONCE has he gone to meet a single plane carrying our fallen troops home for the final time. It's disgusting and Jim, I am with you; no cure, no treatment, just a sentence of death despite the fact they made it home alive to begin with! I will be sure to pass this on to everyone that I know!

And I am unable to convey the depth of my gratitude for your presenting this story front and center!

Unfortunately, this government is more interested in covering up than exposing. We were going to buy a house once in Madison, IL but happened to see an old map of the area - we had no idea what the Jefferson Proving Grounds were - turned out to be a munitions testing ground where there is STILL depleted uranium buried in the ground - 1.4 million unexploded devices still there. So what did they do about this? They renamed it a wildlife preserve.

Thanks, Maureen. To me, the fact that I originally found out about this through a Canadian "progressive" newspaper, and later found tons of information on the internet, proves that our media is equally guilty of perpetrating this major cover-up.

This is not only affecting our soldiers and Iraqi citizens (and children are even more vulnerable) but their future generations.

It's beyond shameful.

Greetings Alf,

Okay . . . you are making me laugh! Population control? Do you honestly view this as a form of such? There are extremes to both sides--and whilst I am NOT--in any way condoning the use of such weaponry, I see that as a wee bit too far to the left; as in potentially paranoid (I have to do self-checks with people I know to ensure that I am not getting paranoid!!! LOL). I say this only with regard to the munitions, and with total respect for you, my friend. *smilely broadly*

The rest of the topics which you list, such as pharmaceuticals, GM, vaccines, et cetera, I agree with.

Though I think my view a bit different than yours in that I see the vaccines as preventing the natural population control that Mother Nature has stored within her Powers. At any moment She can unleash disaster on the entire planet--through chain reaction or whatever She chooses--that will bring an end to life as we know it. =D

I have often wondered if in fact, we aren't destroying on a self-fulfilling prophecy path, which is somewhat deranged thinking to me! However, it would not be the first time in the history of humankind (Homo sapiens sapiens) that a "deranged" thinker took control of most of the known world either. =P lol

In this case, it's about not caring for the military a country has and an administration (at this point, the Sr. Bush) who perceived to some extent that our troops are merely numbers, and they are expendable and "acceptable losses" if it means control of of the real "gold" of our time (oil). The environmental movement has blocked successfully the continued desire to drill and destroy in eco-systems that impact the entire world, not merely the indigenous peoples, plants and animals; we have battled repeatedly to stop drilling in ANWR, and it seems that it's been slipped into another bill or overriden by Bush, or both.

It is messing with the world's oceans, the giver of life. So, in that sense, anyone can research U and its properties. I would hope that most educated in the U.S. have at least the basics of having studied the periodic table??? I cringe to think that's not been the case! Uneducated are much easier to dupe and to control . . . there's a factor that contributes to the apathy. Rather like what Naoimi Wolf has talked about. What do you think?

There are so many comments here that spark thinking which I love! U has a half-life of 238.02891!!! Which translates to Uranium 238 with a half life of 4.46 billion years, and U-235 w/half life of 405 million, and U-234 w/half life of 245,000 years. Either way one looks at which is used, the half life is overwhelming and it's known for radioactive properties *DUH* for the military!

"Uranium-238 emits alpha particles which are less penetrating than other forms of radiation, and weak gamma rays As long as it remains outside the body, uranium poses little health hazard (mainly from the gamma-rays). If inhaled or ingested, however, its radioactivity poses increased risks of lung cancer and bone cancer. Uranium is also chemically toxic at high concentrations and can cause damage to internal organs, notably the kidneys. Animal studies suggest that uranium may affect reproduction, the developing fetus,(1) and increase the risk of leukemia and soft tissue cancers.(2)

The property of uranium important for nuclear weapons and nuclear power is its ability to fission, or split into two lighter fragments when bombarded with neutrons releasing energy in the process. Of the naturally-occuring uranium isotopes, only uranium-235 can sustain a chain reaction-- a reaction in which each fission produces enough neutrons to trigger another, so that the fission process is maintained without any external source of neutrons.(3) In contrast, uranium-238 cannot sustain a chain reaction, but it can be converted to plutonium-239, which can.(4) Plutonium-239, virtually non-existent in nature, was used in the first atomic bomb tested July 16, 1945 and the one dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945" (

That pretty much sumns it up with the ways in which are troops are being used with no respect to the dangers posed to them, the Iraqi people, or the Afgahnistan people, or any other peoples who have been bombarded with this type of weaponry. It clearly states above that it's a "nuclear weapon." It's disgusting our troops would be used like this, and many of them are still unaware, and the Pentagon is surely not going to admit to any harm coming from what they are using on the premise that it's already depleted!!! Helloooooo???

BMutiny, m'Lady. *nods* I haven't seen you or interacted with you in far too long. *hangs head* I agree that Alf points out the necessary truths, however I am not sure that this could be viewed through the lens he is using--though I am sure open to considering it! LOL A country is weak if its military is such, yes? So many are not joining, and others still are.

It is and always has been the traditional way one could serve country since America's inception; however, knowing the lies that recruiters tell, and how troops are being treated without mainstream press on this issue, is appalling to be sure. The only way I see this as "population control," and I am certainly not seriously questioning Alf, is that it erodes our national security and makes it easier to dissolve our borders when we are without the protections afforded for in the Consitution (strong Army/Navy and well armed militias in each state for the state's protection. I.e., the National Guard) The military machine is responsible for that threw lying in recruiting.

I have a friend who's daughter is signing today to enter the Army as a medic, and swears that regardless of what anyone tells her, she is NOT going to Iraq. That's where medics go! She's convinced that what the recruiters have told her is "true," "they wouldn't lie Mom!", that she can pick her base, and be where she wants and there's "no chance you'll go to theatre as medics are needed here at home!" Whatever; she refuses to talk to anyone who is currently active, or has served with the Army, and rejects any thought about being sent to the theatre. *sigh*

Washington knew of the use of "biological warfare" in the Revolutionary War in the form of the smallpox virus; that is what infected his troops through British scheming, when he sought to retake Boston. Most know of its use against Native Americans, particularly the largest Nation, the Sioux.

The secrecy alone of this administration and the damage done with use of WMD (and I don't see how anyone could think any differently as the impacts of its use won't necessarily be known for years to come); for those soldiers suffering already, or who have died as a result, we certainly need speak out for each and every one of them.

Nancy, I couldn't agree more if I tried. And lately I admit with chagrin some of my posts have been rather lengthy. Michael, you always seem to inspire in that regard! =D I miss the rigor of academia, to be sure! lol

The media have done a woeful job as the "first alarm" relative to encroachment of powers on the part of the government, to be sure. Americans seeminly are more entertained by that which they perceive as "not impacting me," and so are conplacent, if not happily so, with their position in life. Unaware of the true evils which have been perpetrated on humankind with the use of readioactive/nuclear ordnance.

I was unable to access the second of the videos Michael. No worries, I think I have a grasp on this one and will do whatever I can to help raise the alarm, as well as the issue! Thank you and Carole again for the further elucidation on the issue. Alf, thanks for the additional perspectives too! =D

Has anyone ever wondered if the combination of childhood diseases actually experienced, rather than vaccinated against, might protect the body from things such as HIV? I ask as it's something I have wondered about for years (not well researched; haven't found papers addressing it). While deforestation--particularly in the Amazon and other tropical areas--continues unabatted, more viruses which have been dormant in the earth are bieng released. The vaccines and anti-biotics that Alf speaks of break down one's immune system. Given I believe that Mother Earth knows precisely what She's doing (and by extension, a spiritual Creator/Power) when it comes to each species, I wonder if that isn't the way that vaccines operate as a form of population control? Relative to humans, it seems that we aren't so smart as long as we think we know more or are superior to She, yes? Most importantly, before "making/building/creating" anymore of the things listed, we need to begin again, thinking about long term impacts of what we do, chemically, medically, and biologically. It's already been too many times that something we thought was "progress" and good for us--DDT for example--turned out to be disastrous to both humans and our National Bird, to name but one.

Orca spirit to all and apologies for length! (again)

Greetings Arielle and Carole,

*Curtsy's deeply* =D It is indeed more than shameful, and I am so happy that you researched the area to discover what lay beneath Arielle. However, I am not so sure that "renaming" it a wildlife preserve is in the best interests of wildlife either! The issue with these types of situations is that there is a halflife and this stuff does decompose.

Most importantly, unexploded munitions can explode at any time and without warning if there is enough chain reaction to produce the heat like, oh let's say maybe an earthquake? Or some unknown rupture deep in the earth that suddenly releases magma? Given the things that we are doing to the planet--in a wholistic perspective--the unimanigible horrors of these things are the ones we aren't seeing because the cover-up of this type of activity on the part of the government is beyond belief.

The complacency of the press would have Madison and Hamilton rolling . . . and must be continuous at this point. Let us hope that can rotate out of the ground to wreak their eloquence and wisdom to the Leaders of this Country at present, eh? *laughing at herself deeply*

Noted, and preaching to the choir here, I have been flogging this topic for months, had it on my share for a long time then on my Billboard along with US Marine and his little boy. Nothing came in the way of comment from either.

It's never to late to educate oneself....having said this I hope that no one will take offense at what I'm about to say....Where in Hades has the general public been in the past five years? I wrote a comment last week mentioning Doug Rokke, and how he had been sent over to evaluate the levels of DU and compile safety guidlines for troop exposure.I spoke with him after a meeting on DU....that was in 2004....Most of us at the meeting agreed that the general public will shake their heads, wring their hands and go on with their daily lives and do NOTHING MORE.... If you have free time type in depleted uranium and check out the sites...check out the photos of the children exposed to the array of chemicals from this god forsaken hell we were sold under the banner of "bringing democracy" If you are one of our soldiers..a wife, husband, mother, father of one chances are you've already have experienced first hand the medical nightmare personally..What I want to know is how many more years will go by before the rest of this nation pull their heads out of the sand and act on what we have been saying ? Sad but true only after you walk in our shoes will you understand what this CHEAP effective weapon does.

Laurie, that's a fair statement. But also, in fairness to those not directly involved with the situation, there is little to no press on this subject. I only found out by ACCIDENT from a Google alert I receive on news for "military/veterans" because I usually post news on my Veteran Advocates group.

As soon as I did hear of it, after some investigation of my own, I was sick to my stomach at the way this has been hushed. Do a Google on DU. You will see little to no mainstream coverage of the subject -- except for parroting of the government blurb that DU is harmless and the worst side effect is a minor skin irritation.

If no one is alerted to the problem, they wouldn't know to look. I'm glad I don't rely entirely on the American media.

There was plenty of press coverage about this - in the alternative media, not the corporate/capitalist media. The corporate/capitalist media is owned and controlled by the bourgeoisie, so what do you expect? News that exposes the reality of imperialism goes totally against the interests of the bourgeoisie, so of course you won't find such news in the media that they own and control.

Therefore, I recommend that you get your news from the alternative media instead, E.g.:

Common Dreams
Green Left Weekly
Le Monde Diplomatique
Mother Jones
Socialist Worker
World Socialist Web Site

Hi Amandine.

Of course there is an exit. Of course we can change our world. All we need to do to change the world is to take action. Already we have changed the world so much in positive ways:

Creating labour unions and winning so many workers' rights for many workers (at least in the first world), such as safety standards, paid holidays, sick leave, the weekend, and the 8 hour day.

Government welfare for people who can't work.

The right to vote for all adult citizens (it used to be a right only for rich white men).

The Cuban Revolution.

The Bolivarian socialist revolution in Venezuela.

Increased peace and unity in Europe.

Latin American countries (such as Argentina) achieving increased political and economic independence from U.S. imperialism, and uniting with other Latin American countries (e.g. the integration agreements of Mercosur and ALBA).

The growth and successes of people's movements in Latin America: landless peasant movements, Indigenous movements, unemployed people's movements, etc..

Advances in human and animal rights.

The growth of environmentalism.

And many other accomplishments.

Simon, I would like to thank you for the information on the media that we should be in touch with, and is available to us, rather than what we get. You Rock! You have always been such a positive support and role model of all causes hon. I started fighting DU more than 10 years ago, working with vets from the first Gulf War who had DU poisoning. 'Our' government knew about this problem then, knew about it in the Bosnian conflict, knew about it when it bombed Baghdad, when it went into Afghanistan and Iraq. They shut down the scientists whose findings showed what DU does. They intimidated those who threatened to go public. They care more about a nuclear agenda and the trillions it would cost to clean up the mess worldwide if the truth, that so called 'low level radiation is no such thing' were ever proved. And DU proves it. The trouble is that no longer have the resources to call our governments to account. And we can't imagine how to create those resources in a world where we have accepted 'the rules'. If we really mean what we all say here, then we have to ask ourselves 2 questions, 1. Am I willing to start imagining, talking, thinking of new ways and pathways to challenge this government and its policy of killing our own troops (as well as millions of middle eastern civilians) with a radioactive WMD and 2 How far am I willing to act on those deliberations? It's better to set yourself a measurable and achievable goal (say 1 or 2 hours a week) than to get fired up and then feel overwhelmed and do nothing. There are people campaigning against DU. You can sign up in the Uk with brilliant outfit, the Campaign Against DU (CADU) at this site:

In the US you can help with this project:
Order the Poison DUst Educator's Packet and /or donate to this urgent project at

Packet contains 2 different length film versions of Poison DUst, lesson plans, photos, bibliography, class projects, reprints and more.

Three years ago, The Daily News ran a story about reservists returning from Iraq in2004 from the same unit who were suffering from what euphemistically has been called “Gulf War Syndrome.” It turned out that they all had been exposed to radioactive dust during their tour of duty in Iraq. The short term and long term effects of this exposure are slowly emerging into public consciousness.*
The military has yet to acknowledge the severity and the extent of the damage to our young men and women and to their offspring.

Today, half of the 697,000 U.S. Gulf War troops from the 1991 war have reported serious medical problems and a significant increase in birth defects among their newborn children.

The effects on the Iraqi population are far greater.**

Many other countries and U.S. communities near DU weapons plants, testing facilities, bases and arsenals have also been exposed to this radioactive material which has a half-life of 4.4 billions years.

This issue is of particular importance to high school students who are considering joining the military after they graduate. In addition to all the obvious dangers, entering the military today puts them at risk for cancer and all the symptoms associated with radiation and heavy metal poisoning—fatigue, muscle weakness, headaches, to name a few. There is now also ample documentation that exposure to the dust can cause birth defects in their children, the same birth defects that are showing up in Iraqi children.****

Greetings Sara,

Thank you so much for the additional information. It's indeed sad to think that the Pentagon is so distant as to consider these factors and be willing to step up and say what they are. In that sense, I totally agree with Alf that it's a form of population control! Apologies Alf, as no offense was ever meant. Thank you too for the additional sites! =)

Cheers, Maureen

I agree with Alf, worldwide Genocide is what's going on. Global elitists must want the whole Middle East to be a wasteland! Even in Dubai, there must be a lot of DU dust to go with the fab shopping, aren't they concerned? This DU is floating around this whole Planet, albeit not in the concentrations of Iraq and other war zones! Our VETERANS and the IRAQI PEOPLE are the harbingers of what is coming for more humans daily, it will only increase! Our veterans will come home and have children born with birth defects! Think of the $$$$$ being made on these illness'! This is tragedy, caused on purpose! No wonder there are medical jobs galore, job security! No one is free, anywhere. If you think you are, so did we(U.S.), but how wrong the citizenry is! Many in Europe seem to feel safe, but how long will your democracy keep you safe from DU, you are closer to the Middle East than us, the NWO strategists probably figure you'll get your share of illness'. Any of us WORLDWIDE is expendable, we are at "Soylent Green" levels now, always another to replace you unless you are a special bloodline, athelete, performer, genius, etc. I feel for Maureen's young medic....she will surely be deployed to a HOT SPOT! This DU info should be posted on the front door of every recruiting station in big print! For all parents and recruits to read. It should be on every commercial that talks about all the great college benefits you are getting, the fact that DU will probably take your health if you get out of the war with your life, before you ever graduate.
Thanks to Michael and Carole for getting this important news out to THIS COUNTRY WHERE WE DESPERATELY NEED FACTS TO WAKE THE POPULATION UP! It is a monumental task if one looks around at the populus, most are clueless to the dangers of DU and everything else that is going on. Wars are just something reported on the news, over and over, over the years you become used to the coverage, people dying somewhere, but not in sight if you live in America. I am sorry it has taken me so long to see what WAR IS. Would everyone still be letting their children join the Army, Navy, Marines or even the Coast Guard or National Guard knowing the dangers that go way beyond death(read: years of death to suffer before you die, purposely given to you to make $$$$ on). I doubt even vets would want their children to serve in these poisoning WARS of the 21st Century. We need to get out of the Death Business! I pray for all affected by this horrible radiation poisoning, and thier families.
I do take hope in the fact that 1)I have learned so much on here in 6 months that I know others are, too. 2)That another million people have joined in said 6 months. It will take everyone globally to wrestle this world back from criminals. There are still WAY more of US than leaders or armies, and many armies would desert if they thought they could just have shelter, food, and love each day instead of the existance they have been forced to be enslaved to. Thanks to all commentators!

Noted! I knew things were bad but I didn't realize they were this bad. Will they ever learn? Thanks to Carole for forwarding this and Michael who posted the stories. This is something that will stay with me forever. What in the hell are the media doing? If we have access to this why aren't they exposing it. Controlled Mass Media is one of the points of facism. Well they are controlled alright. I am sick of all of them and their lousy reporting or non reporting. Is there even an investigative reporter out there? Certainly no that I have seen.

Thank you everyone for all the invaluable information. The gov't looks at our soldiers as "cannon fodder". They make me SICK!
