Australia needs to adopt a national policy to combat rising sea levels, which may see people forced to abandon coastal homes and banned from building beachside homes, said a parliamentary climate change committee

Well we are talking about a country that can work out their problems well, so I find this article helpful, Thank you , Cal, for the sharp reporting you are doing today.

Maybe they should help combat the root cause of the problem (and MANY others) and do something about climate change rather than puting a band aid on the symptoms????

From the Netherlands:

" In an op-ed piece in the December 11 issue of NRC/Handelsblad, Wilco Hazeleger, a senior scientist in the global climate research group at KNMI, writes:

“In the past century the sea level has risen twenty centimeters. There is no evidence for accelerated sea-level rise. It is my opinion that there is no need for drastic measures. It is wise to adopt a flexible, step-by-step adaptation strategy. By all means, let us not respond precipitously.”

This opinion, of course, chimes with the statement by Professor Marcel Stive that I quoted earlier:

“Fortunately, the time rate of climate change is slow compared to the life span of the defense structures along our coast. There is enough time for adaptation. We should monitor the situation carefully, but up to now climate change does not cause severe problems for our coastal defense system. IPCC has given lower estimates for the expected sea level rise in four successive reports.”

As far as I am concerned, this settles the matter. KNMI has spoken. It has spoken clearly. There is no imminent danger of accelerated sea-level rise."

"IPCC has given lower estimates for the expected sea level rise in four successive reports.”

Gee, if the IPCC were promoting a "scam" don't you think it would be giving HIGHER estimates instead?

"As far as I am concerned, this settles the matter. KNMI has spoken. It has spoken clearly. There is no imminent danger of accelerated sea-level rise."

Such an authoritative statement like that, without empirical backup, may be common in religion or politics, but there should be no place for it in science. So, where is the data showing that the melting of the polar ice caps will not cause a rise in sea levels over time? Where do the denialists expect all that water from the melted ice to go? INTO SPACE?

The denialist blog entry in question does not include a direct link to the the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute's website, so I had to hunt for it:

http://www.knmi.nl/

And when I did some digging, I found this:
http://www.knmi.nl/publications/fulltexts/poster_scenarios.pdf

Look carefully at figure G which specifies that sea levels could rise from 35 to 85 cm over the course of the next century!

Is Roger Pielke really that goddamned stupid?! Wilco Hazeleger may have given his person opinion about the matter, but to say that therefore "KNMI has spoken. It has spoken clearly. There is no imminent danger of accelerated sea-level rise," is a stretch that only a denialist like Judy Cross would take seriously.

Thank you Judy for the evidence that THERE INDEED IS A CONSISTANT RISE IN SEA LEVELS - at least you have stopped denying that basic FACT (for now)...yes, it may be rather slow, but it IS HAPPENING and it is SERIOUS. I m sure that the island nations who will BE WIPPED OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH will be glad that they can "adapt" to such changes!!!!!!! Just how does one adapt to having their entire nations being submerged??????? And adaptation is great for rich nations like the US and Asturalia who have the money and means to adapt - but what about the struggeing nations who have no such resources - I guess its tough luck for them, right Judy???? But as long as YOU can adapt - to hell with those who can't - what a wounderful planitary view!!!!!

A good time to start with the town planning of coastal villages.. better to start earlier than leaving it tooooo late

This is so tiresome.

The skeptical view is that the earth has been warming since the early to mid 19th century and sea level has been increasing at a fairly steady rate at the same time.Satellite derived sea level updated- short term trend has been shrinking since 2005
t looks like the steady upward trend of sea level as measured by satellite has stumbled since 2005. The 60 day line in blue tells the story. As you can see, the sea level rise is 3.2mm per year +-0.4mm.

Nothing to get one's knickers in a knot about...unless you are trying to scare people into supporting the most outrageous scam in the history of the world.

You are just moving the goalposts. You admit now that sea levels are rising, but claim instead that it is nothing to be concerned about?! We want to stop the warming and stop the sea level rises. Denying that we can or shouldn work to do that is just idiocy.
