She wasn't given much choice in the matter. The Hearst News Service, who was her employer, gave her two options; retire or be fired.

Helen Thomas is 89 years old and it has seemed to me these past years that everyone at the daily press briefings at the White House just allowed her to be there out of respect for the decades she has been a reporter. These remarks are controversial to many and it is understandable that she left. Too bad she had to go out that way.

Helen Thomas always was a woman with her own mind. She was respected as a journalist who didn't succomb to popular views because she knew more about the machinations of governments, politics, and the influence of power and money, than we could ever know.
Personally I think she was trying to say that it's now safe for the Isralies to return to their homelands in Europe. After all, most Isralies have a 1,000 + yrs, of history from Poland, Germany, Italy, and many other European countries.

I would have liked to see her retire with dignity and appreciation, rather than under this cloud. It's a shame...she's a wise woman and I'm wondering if there hasn't been some physical problem causing the outburst. In any event, she's been an institution in DC and I wish she'd write a book!
