The approximately 20,000 American Indians living near Louisiana's coast, including Houma, Chitimacha, Choctaw and Biloxi tribes, amongst others, recruited a New York City lawyer in fear they would not be compensated fairly

Thanks Cal! I'm sure indigenous peoples will suffer the most due to their connection to the land and water they live in harmony with. Glad to hear they got a lawyer from out of the area as well. Sadly, they are unlikely to be compensated fairly in any case in this Corporatist environment!

Thanks for the article, Cal... glad to see these folks standing up for their way of life along the gulf coast. All peoples along them coast should bring a class action lawsuit against the people who caused them to lose their homes and livlihoods.

Let's hope that justice for these people comes ... before decades pass, as with the proud Sioux nation in South Dakota, one of the poorest of the poor counties in our nation.

The tribes have survived many challenges prior to the oil spill, including land grabs, civil rights abuses, and a series of strong hurricanes, and degradation of the marshes that many members rely on for their livelihood, but I am not certain that you can demand compensation from BP that takes into account historical injustices by third parties.

Amazing that most people think the persecution and destruction of indigenous peoples is over.

Power in numbers. BP must have a huge number of bottom feeding lawyers, but I sure hope the tribes have ones that are better and they will go after BP relentlessly.

Wish all people felt this way.

The oil companies think if they can get away with destruction in other countries, then why not in the US, also? Learning to take care of our Earth is impossible for those who only think of money. It's a good thing these Indian tribes hired a lawyer, otherwise they would probably be ignored.

Pay them and everyone else who has had problems do to the stupidity of the oil giant.

None of the oil companies have ever made up for the suffering they have caused. They poison, rob and murder all over the world and nothing is ever done about it. Can anyone wonder why in some parts of the world oil execs are kidnapped, attacked and murdered? You can only squeeze so much blood from the poor of the earth until some will fight back.
