John Edwards May Face Charges. How Much Trouble Is He in?

Former presidential candidate John Edwards allegedly used campaign funds to hide an affair and an illegitimate child. Will politicians ever learn: It's not the crime but the coverup that can land you in jail?

When Elizabeth Edwards announced that she had stage IV breast cancer, I couldn't help but wonder if the treatments she received in order to become pregnant at an age when other women were thinking about grandchildren had anything to do with it. She did it twice, and I believe it had a lot to do with the grief both she and John were suffering as a result of the loss of their teenaged son. Elizabeth endured a series of medical procedures and then two pregnancies and deliveries. She later put her own life on hold to support and campaign for her husband in his bid for the presidency. When she learned of her cancer diagnosis, she worried not about herself, but how it would effect her husband's campaign. Now that's what I call a devoted wife! She clearly loved this man. How did he reward her? By cheating on her with a goofy bimbo who couldn't hold a candle to his wife, using campaign funds to cover it up, and lying to his wife and the public when confronted with his indiscretion. He did all this while she was fighting for her life! Elizabeth Edwards, true to character, handled the situation with her typical grace and courage. My heart was breaking for her and her children. She lost her husband and then she lost her life but, unlike her husband, she never lost her dignity. Obviously, John didn't appreciate what he had in Elizabeth, and I'm glad she put him out of her life. Before she died, she tied all loose strings, saw to it that her children were provided for, and put out the "garbage." I have nothing but respect for her.

Just think, at one time there was a good chance that John might have been our president. Now there's a good chance that he'll be a prison pretty boy. Thank God he never made it beyond the primaries! I hope Elizabeth is resting in peace.

Why can't these men just keep their pants up? Such a disappointment. Of all the 2008 candidates John Eddwards was the most Progressive, but he was an idiot. He could have done so much good if he would have been honest with himself Elizabeth and the people who supported him. Instead he hurt them all and ruined himself.

Men in power cannot seem to keep their pants zipped. Look at the latest display with now the former IMF president, now he is residing in a luxury apartment!! There is really something wrong with our society.

One might have thought he was sufficiently intelligent to be discrete...and mature enough to be careful. I am generally disinterested in the sexual proclivities of politicians but I remain disgusted that yet another Progressive couldn't keep it in his pants and provided teh self-righteous Republicans more ammunition. I'd be willing to contribute toward a chastity belt for the next literate (I remember 8 years of Nu-cu-lar,) lucid Progressive.

I really thought highly of john edwards and said so. I was wrong and am ashamed that I placed trust in him not deserved. While ordinary people fall into this and that; it is never wise for a politician to fall into these such things on the public stage. I feel bad for all people involved; especially the children. Mrs Edwards loved her husband john with agape love. John got entrapped for whatever reason into romantic love and it chained him to public shame. I hope for him he found this debacle worth it for all the misery and sorrow it has caused his first family and him. this is another human tragedy story but men seem to never learn from others mistakes. Fools go in where wise men never go.

Both Mr. Edwards' crime and cover-up are equally distasteful; perhaps someone can be morally bankrupt and be a good politician at the same time but I think America deserves better.

He's kind of like $arah Palin...most people could not care what happens to him and soon few will even recall who either are when it comes to politics and our world in general. To me...that's an ok thing in both cases :-) .

Wonder if Ensign will do any time? He lied during questioning which was enough to get prison for Martha Stewart. Who thinks he will skate? The 'Family' members who hid it should be slapped down as well. They were covering for Ensign and Sanford. Arnie is being investigated too for using state funds but they ought to look at him for rescuing Ashburn who wasn't just sleazing around but was drunk in a state car. And on and on it goes.

Btw, the quote of the day @ FDL -FireDogLake- which, along with 'Physicians for a National Health Plan', is sponsoring an important petition to get the Federal Govt to let the great state of Vermont implement their universal single-payer health care plan (& that I have posted here), is: "At Firedoglake, we believe torture hurts our country more than consensual blowjobs." - Marcy Wheeler.

That quote -with just minor alteration- could be a good reply for some of the comments here.

A bit of stray sex isn't a crime! -- nor should it have catastrophic effects on politicians' careers.
When will Americans grow up & realize that men enjoy & practise sex, some of them even with 'unworthy' people, if the opportunity arises? When will Americans stop being such Puritans?

Spouses shouldn't be devastated by stray sex, either -- a bimbo who can't hold a candle to the legitimate couldn't possibly be considered a rival !

Misusing campaign funds is another issue, though...

But then, sending everyone to prison isn't a panacea for everything, either, and the only people who benefit are the likes of the Corrections Corporation of America, the biggest private prison business in the US ! Where do you think this knee-jerk reaction of 'send them to prison' comes from? It's all business propaganda, so that CCA & other private prison companies can make ever MORE & GREATER record profits !!

Our nation's prison population has soared by more than 600% since the 1970s, despite a drop in crime rates. In the 20-year period from 1988 - 2008, spending for higher education increased by only 21%, whereas, during the same 20 yrs, spending for prisons increased 127%.

The US has the biggest prison population of any country in the world : Why, with less than 5% of the world's population, do we have almost a quarter (25%) of the world's prisoners? Essentially because too many non-violent offenders, like drug users & bad-check writers, are punished with prison sentences... And too many people have become 'punishment crazy' - crying for longer prison terms as punishment, but never bothering about rehabilitation, so that former prisoners could be returned to society with valid alternatives !

The wife was sick, but the husband was not, so why should he give up having sex (love) with another woman. I wouldn't want my husband to live like a monk if I got sick.
