In African pastoralist communities, mobile phones are crucial for alerting communities to droughts and reducing food insecurity.

I'm glad to see them putting this technology to good use..wish there was a program by which we could send them our used, working cell phones to reach even more people..most of us have at least 1 or 2 buried in a drawer somewhere! Thanks Cal.

It's nice to read about technology being used to help people survive and to help the environment! I hope that much more progress is made in the area of acquiring and teaching people to use the new technologies. It could save many lives.

The last time I was in Kenya/Tanzania.....I couldn't help but notice that literally EVERY adult had a cell phone! You can drive down a dusty, bumpy, unpaved road and pass a Masai tribesman striding along in the dust, looking the way his ancestors did.....except he's got a battery-powered watch and a cell phone!

It's really good idea that technology is used for helping people.
