At a diner near one of those centers, ads in a local flyer promise $130 to potential donors and extended hours of operation to help lure potential clients to sell their plasma.

I would not calling selling your plasma to be immoral, it's what desperate people do. On the flip side, how do these people so easily cross the border into Texas?

This happens with Americans as well....the poor have so little to sell so they are forced to sell themselves or parts of themselves. Recall the expression of being "piss poor" or he is so poor he doesn't have a pot to piss in? Well in the past people sold their urine for money and some were too poor to even afford to have a pot to pee in. The urine was used to tan hides. The Wealthy don't want you to have a thing, they don't care, so is why the masses must stand up to them. Greed is without heart.

Disturbing, sad. Extreme way for people to survive. Poor in India, Romania sold kidneys to survive.
Population should introduce planing.

This does not appear to be immoral to me to sell your plasma. What is immoral is that many have no choice if they want to survive. What is immoral is having billions of dollars while so many others are suffering and dieing for want of essentials. If I had billions (or millions) a large portion would go to charities or to organizations that help others become productive, healthy, and safe. But the 1% seems to be morally bankrupt while the poorest are financially bankrupt. It's a crime. Though I have far from millions, I still support as much as I can.

Thank you Cal for the important post. How can this be allowed to be done. With all the germs and sicknesses in Mexico and were taking their plasma and maybe their blood? This is not a good idea and a safety standard for a quick buck of the American dollar and go home and exchange it for more money. Our American dollar id gold to them. I wouldn't allow this period. I guess they call this World Trade with forgien exchange. It's Screwed up...!

"With all the germs and sicknesses in Mexico and were taking their plasma and maybe their blood? "

I wondered when a racist would crawl out of the woodwork. So, there are no germs or sicknesses in the US? And the US agencies responsible for accepting blood don't screen?

Come back when you have something useful to say.

We need to get the hell out of the Middle East and protect our borders, both from Mexico & Canada. Do we real need more problems?? Why isn't our government protecting us? What do we pay all those taxes for?? The plasma issue is only a small problem compared to the cartels invading our country. This no longer a question of racism, but safety!!!!!.

So so sad. And a few racist comments here as well, very shameful. The US is not free of germs and actually the number of people with AIDS is way higher than in Mexico as well as hepatitis (note for Jon Hoy), and of course the use of drugs. And Dolores M, This has nothing to do with protecting borders, and maybe if you get the hell out of the Middle East, you'll be more protected if you're willing to pay more for your gasoline, so start using your bike. Oh and I'm sure there would be no cartels if you also start minding your drug use so the Mexican cartels don't have a market feed!
