Supply-driven marketing not only turns the nation into pill-popping hypochondriacs, it distracts from Pharma's drought of real drugs for real medical problems.

Anyone who goes into healthcare to become wealthy has about as much of a conscience as Dick Cheney. I would rather suffer and try to overcome my ailments naturally than feed the coffers of these vampires!

Some of the possible reactions to taking these pills are worse than the ailment. If at all possible try the holistic route first.

Yes, my wife has been led into this trap. She contracted RSD ( a very painful nerve disease ) and now has insomnia on top of other problems. Of course the damn pharasutical companies are estatic to have all these incurable diseases so they can now get rich as hell at our expense. Things are further complicated by ignorant doctors (possiblty complicient) who are fully willing to have a patient who is theirs for life to make money off monthly visits for prescriptions. It's a dispicable and trully amoral way to make a living. Not to mention a very lucrative one at that. Sorry if I sound bitter, but we're fed up, frustrated, and suffering because of them!!!

Isn't GREED lovely? It causes people who make the drugs WANT as many people as possible to be sick! Makes you feel the way the very, very old must feel when they cross paths with the local undertaker and wonder if he's seeing dollar signs as he smiles and says hello...

I get a chuckle from the medical commercials that tell you all these great things about ______________ (insert new drug here) and then you hear a voice say "side effects may include..." in the fastest way while still being intelligible. When the list of side effects is longer than what the drug is supposed to "cure" I deem that drug UNSAFE! And as a "side note" (pardon the pun) DEATH IS NOT A SIDE EFFECT!!!! IT IS A RESULT!!!
That all being said, I avoid prescription drugs with a vengeance! They are all just legal poison. I use holistic means when my body gets out of whack, which works for me, and I don't have all those expensive visits and drugs each month to deal with (I am one of the 46 million people in this country without health insurance)

Fabulous article that really does tell the truth about big pharma and these 'dis-eases' that people have or think they have. What is wrong with doctors (greedy for money?) that don't tell patients to get out in the sunshine, walk, get a new lease on life by doing what they love, eat organic food, be cheerful and grateful, and get over yourselves?!.
We are not living in a 3rd world country walking thu dangerous lands just to put a jug of water on our heads---to have drinking water, cooking water, bathing water......We don't worry about our children or grandchildren picking up a bomb-let or getting shot while trying to go to school....we have become a nation obsessed with itself, our ills and our imperfections. I don't mean to trivialize real medical problems, but it seems that our medical practitioners are quite in the pockets of big pharma.....who put on free luncheons for the doc's, give free samples, and kick back's?

Sorry Big Pharma...if I did contract one of these illnesses...that LAST thing I would do is take your GMO-laden drugs. How can it make you well while causing irreparable harm to the body simultaneously. So much for the Hippocratic Oath and "first, cause no harm" HOW can a corrupt SICKO industry make anyone healthy and well again?

Sounds like that Devo 'Speed Racer' song. I'm currently not a pill-popper and hope never to be. I have a rule of considering all video advertising blatant lies and refusing to buy products adverted on TV but nowhere else. I plan to continue this until the whole nation either falls apart or manages to recover from these crummy communists trying to invade Congress and putting their puppet in the Whitehouse...

My fibromyalgia is wasted on Big Pharma since Lyrica isn't even an option in my case. At least now I know why those perky, pushy "sales reps" have a more than passing resemblance to professional "escorts."

Excellent article Cal. From the article: "To make sure no one thinks ADHD is a made-up disease, WebMD shows color-enhanced Pet scans of the brains of a normal person and an ADHD sufferer (flanked by an ad for Vyvanse). But it is doubtful the scans are really different, says psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Sinaikin, author of Psychiatryland. And even if they are, it proves nothing."

Out of the mouths of babes!

"The crux of the matter is that there is simply no definitive understanding of how neuronal activity is related to subjective consciousness, the age-old unsolved body/mind relationship," Sinaikin told AlterNet. "We have not advanced beyond phrenology, and this article in WebMD is simply the worst kind of manipulation by the drug industry to sell their overpriced products, in this case a desperate effort by Shire to maintain a market share when Adderall goes generic."

Big pharma, may you stick it where the sun don't shine...

Thanks for this article, Cal, Having worked in the medical profession for many years, these types of articles always interest me. My M.D.s hate to see me coming because they know that I know what they are talking about. I question them at every turn (patients have a right to do that). I feel sorry for the lay people who are not educated in these matters.

Research your ailments before jumping on the nearest prescription bandwagon. I think hypochondria/paranoia is alive and well in America.

plus, they are waging a war, ally of the fda, against vitamins and natural supplements.
they are blocking new discoveries, so that you might take their screwed up expensive pills, instead.
Getting sicker from new side effects, giving doctors and hospitals validation.
While, all the time, new supplements of natural plants and flowers are to be illegal.

Is it any wonder that they never seem to come out with cures anymore? Even vaccines have been run through the mud over and over again by mainstream media, because big pharma makes a whole lot more money on 'treatment' than they could ever do on silly things like curing or preventing illness altogether.

The days of amazing people like Jonas Salk, who developed the vaccine for polio and refused to get a patent because he knew how important his work was to humanity, for the good of us all, are sadly long gone. Everyone in this world has fallen ill to something far worse than polio or smallpox, which is the absurd greed and self-centered mentality that unregulated capitalism has spread across this planet. All anyone cares about is money and power for themselves, to hell with everyone else. Everyone thinks that the planet revolves around them, even their own friends and family are not as important as the almighty dollar. So sad, is there any hope for the survival of such a despicable species?

Powerful article! But its the same thing that goes on in all other types of business. I went to buy a 15 ft printer cable the other day, and found them at two well known national electronics stores for over $30 bucks. Since business is one of my majors I already know better, so I went to a computer store and got it for $4. Only medicine is far worse, I've seen people when I go to the doctor with literally bags of medication!

You know WHY these drugs DON'T work and have so many side effects??? They test on animals who don't even have our own physiology!!! My own doctor keeps pushing me to take mega pills...for cholesterol and Acid Reflux and anything else she doesn't understand gets penicillin. The only med that work on my Acid Reflux is Nexium. They cost over $200 for a 30 day supply and my insurance won't cover them. Pharma sucks.

ADHD & ADD are being diagnosed more commonly as with other forms of autism. That is good news for the children with learning disabilities but bad news for schools. To "help" doctors like to recommend drugs such as Ritalin because actually working properly with such children and using the special methods to give them life long skills is too much trouble (although some children do benefit from taking medication for a while). So, let's dose the kids with medication........

If the medical profession doesn't know, take a tablet. If the doctor wants a free holiday, take a tablet!

I remember the tablets, the Beatles wrote a song about "Mother's Little Helper" as they were so common.

All these drugs have too many side effects, anyway. It's best to stay away from pharmacies and doctors as much as possible!!!!!!!
