The rhetoric of Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin and Rick Perry about the "real America" is not imagined: They and those who oppose them live in different Americas.

Noted. It occurrs to me that what this country was founded as has been altered drastically. This was supposed to be a nation of people who were tolerant, believed in equality, and held human rights very high. Ever since the constitution was ratified there have been those seeking to warp it and twist it t suit their needs. The safeguards put in place to prevent corruption have been altered and ignored. We are far from a country governed for the people by the people. It disgusts me and saddens me.

Having lived in Alabama for 2 years, I can say with all honesty the site of that glag makes me ill!
And for anyone that buys that " its not racist", or this and that, and "its a rememberenceof our fallen brethren, to honour THEM"...BULLS##t!!!!!!
Amd when I saw it flying over their capital, and then see a KKK rally were it was proudly held by every single hooded POS, and tattood on many..ugh!
Even now I occasionally see it displayed on houses..usualy meth houses.
So while its flag and roots can be viewed as American, i'd rather not. It's mot representative of an America I want to associate with or even live amongst.
Thanks Cal

All you see the builderburg planned conspiracy is taking root OWs is a foreign inspired civil unrest funded by a builderburg member. Greece and Europe currency collapse builderburg Arab spring is funded by builderburg. Republican candidates called for a covert war against Syria and Iran, And yes people we are seeing the beginning of world war III in which we invade russia.

P.S. buliderburg Phase 1.) out of world chaos comes the new world order, Phase 2.) Depopulation of the planet by billions via world war IIi.

What began as a difference of opinion between John Dewey and Randolph Bourne, fueled by Dewey's ego being bruised because his beliefs were challenged, appears to have been the start of progressivism vs. conservatism. Unfortunately, the "parallel universe" of religious institutions that were built for the purpose of resisting change exists to this day ensuring that some people will never believe what's right before their eyes, and they'll always have an excuse for living in their own self-serving reality.

Great article! Thanks, Cal!

I dont know how to comment on this article....all I know is that this at one time was a self supporting nation rite on down to the individual, that is before we became the WOH BE ME sociaty that we've become. To think that either of these two party's have your constitutional rights in mind you would be sadly mistaken, they both govern on can we control the people? FEAR, FEAR, FEAR. Also if you were to believe that your elected officials make the decisions that would probably be wrong too.....special interests control our goverment not the people Left or Right.

All racism begins with greed. The poor people are played against each other because of their ignorance. The strength of enlightened people is the only thing that stands between the greedy ruling class and the total domination of the masses. The learned fears, bias, and stereotypes, engendered often since childhood, are often used by the powers that be to divide and conquer the masses. As long as human beings believe that one race of people is superior to another, we will always have the same tragic results! We are all the same! Because we are all really just one big family of human beings, unfortunately, try to explain it to unenlightened!

The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government."

Holy smoke, talk about stereotyping. When one talks about the confederacy one naturally thinks about the South. Surprise, surprise. There are radicals of all shapes and sized all over this country and there will always be. Sure, lets attack the South. That will help this nation a lot.

That's right. Promote disharmony among the states. Happy Holidays!

In much of the south, the Civil War is still referred to as "the Northern Aggression" - sorry to say, racism is alive and well in the south so if there is stereotyping, it's most likely well-deserved. The red states would be much happier if we reverted to the "good old days".

Though I think this article is one of the many on this site that act a little bit in the favor of fear, I agree that America's politics have been getting more and more conservative. That is until now. Things are getting better... Stop beng so scared, please. :)

Talk about racism alive?
When living in Alabama, (I was there taking car of my mother w/terminal cancer)
I also worked at a restaurant, I was both bartender and was one of those "plate lunch" places, with sometimes only a part time cook also working.
I always looked forward to my bi-weekly visit from the "Bud delivery guys.
One day at work I got a call that my moms cancer had taken a turn for the worse, and was beside myself.
The younger "Bud guy" who was black, tried his best to console me. When a replacement for me finally arrived, I grabbed my purse and tip jar.
And low and behold, guess what was in that jar?
Extra tips, a note of sympathy? NO!
Two business cards that had "You Have Been Visited By The KKK".
All because someone showed empathy and compassion in a time of grief, and gave me a hug, and talked to me. And was black.
Everyone in there was an almost daily customer I considered frienly regular, who I laughed and joked with at least 5 times a week.
And they kept their secret well..i never did find out who left those disgusting, evil momentos of good ole Alabama.

"The Southís alternative vision of the good society was defeated in the Civil War, and our 20th-century history can be told as a narrative of halting progress toward greater tolerance and equality. The major plot points include regulations on corporations in the early 1900s; womenís suffrage in 1920; a social safety net in the New Deal; the Supreme Courtís rejection of Jim Crow laws in 1954; the civil rights and feminist movements of the 1960s; the gay rights victories since the 1970s."
The RepubliCONs & Blue Dog DINOs just can't handle the 21st Century. Global Warming WILL kill off these reptiles..if we can force them back under their racist, repre$$ive rocks!

I would not live in the south if you paid me to. It must be awful to have to be stared at and treated like if you are a lesser human being. Iím not criticizing most of the people of the south as there are plenty of good people also, as well as bigots in other parts of the nation and even in other parts of the world. Just the arrogant ones who believe that you should be able to own other human beings unjustly as slaves, and treat them horribly like they did in the American history books; that was, still is, and always will be, plain evil!
