This is a common theme. Big pharmasutical companies have bribed and brainwashed the medical profession to prescribe as many pills/medications as possible in order to creat a huge profit to themselves. Along the way the doctors get rich as well. This is a horrible strike against the hippocratic oath. They claim such lofty standards, but in reality many of them are just in it for all the money they can make. It is just another symptom of corporate greed and power. And for all the time and money spent on cancer research and other cures, why is it all they can come up with is more treatments and never any cures!

A pill for this, a pill for that...
When sometimes all it takes is a little human compassion in the way of counciling and therapy.
With schizophrenia on the rise, and PTSD claiming the lives of once brave servicemen and woman, big pharmastill pushes pills, not hope or answers..and that is turning tragic on an increasingly large scale.

There's just so much we don't know. Mental illness is a horror and families of those who have it will do just about ANYTHING to get their loved one back! Unfortunately, that puts pressure on the medical community to deliver...even if they're not really capable of doing so. Add that to greed and the wish for SPEED....and you've got a crisis!

I don’t think that just the ‘values of the psychiatric profession’ is compromised, but psychiatry in general. We all know that pharmaceutical companies have no conscience and the only thing that counts to them is hard cash. Drug samples of drugs that may have severe side effects and/or severe impact of a person’s behavior are readily given to any medical practitioner without second thought. General practitioners are not qualified to prescribe or order such medication but it does not stop them. Many doctors are very quick with the prescription of drugs as a temporary fix or maybe to comply with the drug companies demand to disburse the drugs – I am not sure.
Perfect example: myself! When my mother died I took some days off for family FMLA, but needed a doctor’s note for it. So I went to my PCP, gave her the forms and waited. When I received the forms back a prescription for an anti-depressant was included. Of course I trashed it and took ample time to grieve for my mother. Anti-depressant for grief? Come on!

An excellent article Cal, thank you. How bizarre that parents can be sent to jail for over drugging their child but the psychiatrists who prescribed the drugs that killed the child was supported by the psychiatric industry as prescribing and treating "appropriately". So appropriate psych treatment is to drug a child from the age of 28 months until she is dead at 4 years old? What kind of an industry is that? Disgusting.

I wouldn't put all the blame on Big Pharma though. Just imagine all the praises to big Pharma if all the pills psychiatrists were pushing actually helped people, did something good, worked, you know. So evidently Psychiatry doesn't know what it's doing and is actually harmful to people.
As for the psychiatrist who dosed the infant until she died at 4 yrs old because of his psychiatric drugs, he should be charged with murder and the mother with manslaughter. Instead he's given a free get out of jail card by his cronies.

Noted. Very interesting read. How anyone can label an infant or toddler with a mental illness is absurd! All children are different and some are more active than others, less attentive etc. It does make them mentally ill, as much as a handful as they may be to their parents! The teenage diagnosis almost made me laugh if it wasn't so tragic. Teenagers are well known to be defiant and to not listen to their parents. It is them asserting their independence, if it were a sign or a mental illness than 99.9% of teenagers have it. Imagine if they were all medicated!

Do we know what we are talking about. have you lived with people who have a mentla illness?
We complain sometimes as if there are known cures or ever have been. have you ever been attacked by someone out to lunch or in dt's and strong as an ox or drugged out and strong an ox and talking crazy. Maybe you have read the news papers and some child(adult) beat the lliving day lights out of their senior guardians. Doesn't sound attractive now does it? Maybe a wife with a crazy husband or a single lady with a crazy ex trying to kill her. These are all realities of the mentally il and those who have to deal with them. And the stories are many. take help where you can get it.
Think about this; with all the talks of federal cuts backs-- the gov. houses the criminally insane on the tax payors dime. They can get crazy enough (the gov) to let them all out stating we can't afford to house them, it's not their job. We have this cut gov thing going on and big pharma this and that , think--- what are the alternatives? There are none--

Lyn L. you're concentratng too much on violent acts by people. The majority of society does not walk around commiting criminal violent acts. And a violent act can be committed by anyone, not just by 'crazy' people or people who are labelled as 'mentally ill' by psychiatry.
I'd also suggest stop reading newspapers so much. They're full of bad news, they exist and thrive on bad events, and give the illusion everything is bad all over and worse than it is.
You're wrong that there are no alternatives to psychiatry or their drugs. Do an extensive and long and hard search on the internet about it.

Besides the above, psychiatry uses the DSM, a manual of about 374 'mental disorders', the majority of which are inane things like bedwetting, being anxious, sad, fidgeting, not concentrating, arguing with authority, etc. which they deem to be 'crazy'. Only a minority of their 'crazy' labels have anything to do with violent acts.
