Millions of dollars from a White House drug program may have helped the NYPD pay for its controversial surveillance of Muslim communities.

Somehow this shouldn't be a surprise. I wonder how many other cities are doing the very same thing.

I don't hold may police in high regard anyway. This is no surprise.

at least the money was put to good use. it could have spent in worse ways.

Auditors should be able to find who misappropriated the funds for use other than in accordance with the grant's approved purposes and activities--and file related federal criminal charges against the NYPD personnel responsible for it.

Just remember: today it's Muslims. Tomorrow, Tea Partiers? Conservative Christians? Republican voters. Oh, bring it on.

There needs to be better oversight of how OUR money is spent. I'm tired of having money that is supposed to fund one thing being commandeered for another purpose.

Yes, how about the money that was suppose to fund Social Security over the years? And those raids were on a Trust Fund to boot.

Open your eyes. Muslims are slowly taking over without firing a single shot. You think that they aren't a threat then just look at Syria where the Koran means more than life itself. You and I, and every person who has a different religion isn't tolerated. We are the evil ones. These are facts. Wake up people before it's too late!!!

Stop wasting money on drug wars, war wars and espionage and start putting it to real use in programs that actually benefit the people of this country!

I don't deny this is possible, in fact probable. I just get uncomfortable reading the source is "a new associated press investigation" reports...who the heck are these people?

I'm with Janet K. We are wasting far too many resources on drug wars and prisons.
And shame on the NYPD for spying on people because of where they go to worship. Our freedoms seem to be nothing more than rote, shallow and empty words of convenience.

So, what's new? The NYPD as well as police departments across the country have been infiltrating and monitoring PEACE activists since the Vietnam war. See these websites:,0,5659230.story
Especially COINTELPRO:
It's insane, they've even spied on Code pink, grandmothers against the war. They consider peace activists to be nearly anarchists, not to mention Animal activists which can now be charged as terrorists. You can't make this stuff up, it's terrifying.

The constant reminder of our country being attacked by air relentlessly by
Desert people on 9/11 preys on the President's mind. Drug Programs are put on the back burner now and full attention is given to the country's safety.
NYC has been a target and may be targetted again. A vast assortment of
Desert people dwell here and are not above suspicion. They will be scrutinized. They will be surveilled.

Shame on the NYPD! The money should of been used to help fight CRIME not spy on people while at worship!

New York has more junkies than Muslims! But hey it's easier to go after the Muslims right? Shame on NYPD!

Not surprising considering the paranoia of some towards Muslims. It's very sad. Extremists hijack religions for their own purpose. I wish more people would understand that and not target everyone because of their faith. It's a shame that the money wasn't used to the drug programme. That would have benefitted far more people.

Surprise! the NYPD and the CIA are in effect money laundering to violate the US Constitution an US law. As for Dolores and Pat so nice to hear the Islamophobic Christian Taliban of America choir early in the morning. Personally I am more worried about the Christian Taliban of America and its all out assault on Women's Rights and LGBT Rights. All this bullshit smoke screen about Islamic Sharia taking over America as cover for the Christian Taliban of America dominionists working like hell to subvert the US Constitution and institute Christian Sharia into US law. What the hell else is this Repug/Tea Bagged onslaught of 'Personhood laws, Anti-Choice laws, State Trans-Vaginal Rape laws, defense of DOMA, anti-contraception laws except a blatant attempt to end separation of Church and State and Freedom of Religion and the exercise thereof? What the NYPD, the CIA, and who knows what other supposed 'law enforcement' agencies are doing is illegal. The NYPD has no jurisdiction and no legal right to ast outside of NYC regardless of the excuses. The CIA is expressly forbidden by law from operating inside US borders.

@PatG, Desert people? Really? Listen, you need to do a bit more reading if you still believe the 'Official' version of 9/11. The 'Official' story has waaaay too many holes in it. You can start with bldg 7, not hit by a plane, no significant fire, goes down in it's tracks just like 1 & 2 exactly like 'pulled' bldgs. The security for the entire WTC complex was, for several years before the "attacks", run by G.W. Bush's brother and his cousin. There is just so much out of whack you really need to investigate yourself. Another good place to look is a website run by FDNY people that were there. It explains how they heard the squibs going off, they explain how the concrete was turned to dust and how the heat generated by Jet fuel is not enough to weaken the steel girders nor cause explosions that are more like thermite (what's used in bldg demolition). You need to lose the "Desert people" tag as well since it shows your discrimination. The people from the middle east are still just people not demons like they're both made out to be by the Bush Administration and not made out to be by the Bush Administration as in "We were attacked by rabid 'Islamists' that hijacked the Muslim faith" but not by Muslims. There is plenty of data if you'll look, which, judging from your approach you likely won't. OBTW, 'they're' not the only ones being surveilled, look up operation TALON which retrieves ALL email from EVERYBODY. It's an FBI software that they were 'supposed' to stop doing, just like we're 'supposed' to stop extraordinary rendition and torture.

Where's the report of federal auditors verifying whether such was compliant with rules for the grant funds and proposal approved?
