In 2012 it looks like we can expect the Obama administration to continue to barrel down the path that has already taken us far from the country we used to be.

Think the greatest threats are the Homeland Insecurity and the NDAA. Those are real threats to any form of Constitutional rights, which are rapidly declining. While Americans do a lot of complaining, they don't seem willing to do much more. The other grave threat to freedom of the individual is the ongoing and ever increasing war on women. We need the ERA - and we need only 3 more states.

"Al Qaeda" is not the reason the U.S. attacked Iraq. Al Qaeda was not present in Iraq prior to the attack. The U.S. attack opened Iraq up for Al Qaeda and took out the secular dictator, in accord with Al Qaeda demands.

"Al Qaeda" is not the reason the U.S. attacked Afghanistan. In 2001, Taliban factions repeatedly asked the U.S. to extradite bin Laden. At one point, they even offered to pay for the cruise missile that would take bin Laden out. This was BEFORE 9/11. The U.S. wasn't interested.

AFTER 9/11, the Taliban offered to have bin Laden tried in an Islamic country. They asked only that the U.S. supply evidence of bin Laden's guilt. The U.S. supplied no evidence.

For 10 years now, the U.S. has been bombing the country. Most of the victims are peasants who know nothing about 9/11. The U.S. itself admits that the number of "Al Qaeda" people in the country is under 100. Yet the occupation and bombardment continues. This tells us that something other than "Al Qaeda" motivates the war-making.

Politicians often do one thing and then say the exact opposite. Reagan, for example, supported the contra terrorists in Nicaragua while loudly denouncing "Terrorists!".

This radical hypocrisy or audacity is hard for most Americans to fathom. We are way too trusting. If a politician says something, our first instinct is to BELIEVE. At best, we may conclude that the politician has exaggerated or embellished the truth. It's hard for us to imagine that the truth is the exact opposite of what has been said.

Thus, we end up living in a world of illusions, where reducing a country to rubble is seen as "Liberation!" or "Freedom!" and doing the bidding of Al Qaeda -- in Iraq and now Syria, for example -- is seen as "Fighting Terrorists". There is no way to free ourselves from this inverted self-destructive system, so long as we allow pleasant illusions to supersede reality.

Like a large percentage of Americans, I awake each day to recognize my country less and less.

Gore Vidal has a thesis that there were never any "best values", that the USI has always been a rapacious empire.
