Increasing numbers of Malian women are being raped by Tuareg rebels and armed groups that have swept across the north of Mali since the beginning of year, expelling all government troops from the region.

First thing when there is an uprising/rebellion in these savage countries is raping and looting. The fevered activity gives these males a kick.

"One group, Ansar Dine, led by Iyad Ag Ghali, a prominent leader in previous Tuareg uprisings, has begun attempting to enforce Sharia law in the north. Soon after entering Timbuktu, Ag Ghali announced the groupís beliefs on the radio.

"Misfortune is due to peopleís lack of faith in God, and because they have abandoned the practice of Sharia, because we have changed our way of life under the influence of whites," he said.

While Ag Ghali is estimated to only have around 300 men in his ranks, his influence goes far and wide. Many MNLA commanders are still loyal to him from previous rebellions, as are drug smugglers, and other Islamist groups in the region.

Since Ansar Dine announced Sharia law, there have been unconfirmed reports of Ag Gali travelling with leaders from AQIM, the regional Al Qaeda group. It is also believed that Nigeriaís extremist group, Boko Haram, and the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa have been operating in the region.

As residents report foreigners increasingly being spotted in the Islamists ranks, fears grow that Ag Ghaliís goal of creating an Islamic state could be closer to being achieved. Many Malian women, who have enjoyed freedom and relative equality compared to women in other countries in the region, are concerned this freedom could soon be a thing of the past."

+++++++++++++++++ No surprise there!

Not surprising.

The Tuareg rebels are from former territory of the Fulani Empire, a.k.a. the Sokoto Caliphate. If you have read my comments elsewhere about how the development of a Caliphate severely slows social development and know that centuries ago such atrocities were commonplace, then you probably understand why they are not surprising. If anybody doesn't, then just ask and I will be happy to explain.

I should probably point out that much of the rest of Mali is actually quite civilized, notwithstanding the recent crime-wave following the coup.

Cal thank you for bringing this "Must-be-ACTIONED-On" issue to our attention.

Whenever, I sandwich into conversations that too many humans who are the most profoundly voracious form of Cancer on Earth, people think I am nuts!! I do wonder at times as to why were humans created in the first place?

Never mind, the second coming of Christ, Prophet, Lord Buddha, etc... bringing about the apocalypse on earth. We humans are doing this rather efficiently on our own accord without the aid of a/any heavanly being.

These atrocities in Africa is neither new nor unique as it has been happening (and still is ) on a global scale. Just see what the Chinese did and do to Tibetans and to their own Chinese dissidents, the Assad regime in Syria, The Burmese junta, The Taliban in Afghanistan and let's not forget Bahrain, the list goes on and on and on.

It is an unfortunate sad fact that the rest of us residing in non-hostile territory can scream, cry, jump-up-and-down at our politicians as much as we want is NOT going to stop these atrocities as long as there are seriously deluded Lunatics still walking on earth.

On a better note, we can try in our ways to help those who are the victims of deranged minds by supporting effective good causes who strives towards the cessation of suffering.

BTW.... as the US, UK, Russia and China are the worlds largest weapons and arms manufacturers which are a multi billion dollar industry and therby contributing greatly in the respective countries economies. So no one holds their breath in the vain hope that politicians will genuinely stop wars.

Angola, Somali , D. R. of Congo and Sierra Leonne , etc have been on mass scale tribal and ethnic cleansing wars for decades... but they BUY large quantities of weaponry.

WARS in whatever scale means money and profits!
