The world is so "civilized" and this kind of prejudice still exists.

PLEASE LET'S AVOID MAKING OVERALL GENERALIZATIONS......

I THINK THAT EVERY KIND OF PREJUDICE ALWAYS COMES only from IGNORANCE & PEOPLE NOT BEING OPEN-MINDED......

Some how the article doesn't surprise me since Italy is host to the city state the Vatican. Let us hope Italy will emerge from the middle ages and join the 21st century. In the meantime I hope the GLBTQ community stands firm. Thanks for the posting Cal.

I don't understand the thrust of the article. The Catholic church is huge in Spain and Portugal too, even Ireland, yet GLBT rights are so much better there. The (horrendous and disgusting) church is getting the blame for a government that really didn't care.

There has always been a gay "underground" in Italy. Being the right arm of the Vatican has made gay rights more than difficult.

The homophobes deserve to have their feet stuck in buckets of a Roman invention called concrete, and to be tossed into the Mediterranean. Useless scum!

I LIVE in ROME:
- I WORKED in a COMPANY where GAYS & LESBIANS WERE WORKING!!!!! SOME OF THEM DECLARED IT OTHERS DIDN'T (IT'S DEFINITELY THEIR CHOICE).
-TWO TENANTS OF MY APARTMENTS THAT I RENT WERE GAYS, and we talked about it WITH NO PROBLEM......
- I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS WHO ARE GAYS & LESBIANS......
WE ARE NOT in the MIDDLE AGES.......

I DON'T have RACIAL or ETHNIC or RELIGIOUS or NATIONS' prejudices at all!!!!!! I was used to say Salamualaikum! to my Islamic and Shalom to my Jewish and Namaste to my Hindu FRIENDS AT SCHOOL!!!!!! BAD people can be of whatever kind on this Planet WE CANNOT and MUST NOT GENERALIZE!!!!!!! I have only prejudices towards THOSE WHO DON'T LET YOU EXPRESS YOUR OPINION, or ACCUSE you without waiting for what you have to say, and ARE ABLE TO CONCEIVE A ONE-WAY ONLY COMMUNICATION Pattern: i.e.: if you take for granted what they state: ok they are your friend, otherwise YOU are wrong and there is NO MORE DIALOGUE (in Care2 they JUST cancel friendship, it's very easy..

DO WE WANT TO TALK OF PREJUDICES???????
I NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE IN TREATMENT OF PASSENGERS in the UK and USA Airports!!!!! Travelling with my husband (ENGLISH) and my daughter Jasmine (ENGLISH SURNAME & PASSPORT too): THEY WERE NEVER STOPPED AT THE SECURITY CHECK POINTS, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN STOPPED, SEARCHED, ASKED TO TAKE AWAY MY SHOES, etc. etc. and received a more NASTY treatment respect to them, PROBABLY BECAUSE I RESEMBLE A LATIN AMERICAN, or an ARAB PASSENGER!!!!!!
THIS HAPPENED FAR BEFORE SEPT. 11!!!!!!!

DO WE WANT TO TALK OF PREJUDICES??
WHEN MY HUSBAND (ENGLISH) ASKED FOR a simple glass of BEER WHILE WE WERE SITTING AT DINNER in a Pennsylvania, Intercourse, RESTAURANT......... WE WERE WATCHED LIKE CRIMINALS, and WITH DISGUST, and the WAITER ANSWERED VERY RUDELY: "THIS IS A DRY RESTAURANT!!!!!"

I remember reading an article a little while ago that said the Catholic church had very little influence on the Italian people now. So the only people who would know the truth are the people who live in Italy.

I actually receive them on my computer even when Care 2 have removed them from the thread I often do not click the tracking button because they drive me mad that some one like that has access to my personnel computer so I just find the thread and go back to read comments

Yet another one I find flagging a waste of time I think its probably Chinese as I deal with a lot of Chinese students and the vocabulary is so similar It really puts me off tracking as when I open this rubbish it scares me that they have access to my computer.

Noted. Homophobia is everywhere, even in countries where gay marriage is legal. It's unfortunate, but bigotry, hate and fear knows no boundaries, and no one country can claim to monopolize these human frailties.

Its very disturbing that the first paragraph shows Italy's ignorance (which sounds as bad as the US from this article) that homosexuals can and should be "healed".

This is an incredibly sad article to read. Looks like the Catholic Church strikes again in making life miserable for minority groups and holding back progress and acceptance.

I am not a Roman Catholic Yes they have their problems but do not forget the good they do
People are always ready to attack and blow things up out of proportion.
Ester is right also Patricia you have to live in Italy before you can start the judging

"Do not forget the good they do."

Really? Considering that the Catholic church is one of the richest organizations on earth....how much "good" DO they do? And how?

marie Taylor clarke (166)

I am not a Roman Catholic but I am surprised in this day and age I have to explain to anyone "what good they do" Not withstanding the serious issues the Catholic church must address. The list of good they do by far outweighs the bad.
Help one way or another is there for whoever asks for it hospices halfway houses for people coming out of prison homes for homeless homes for unmarried mothers A true Roman Catholic has no fear of dieing their faith is remarkable need I go on.
Why is it always about MONEY so what tell me which religion isn't.
I myself am a Christian and very proud to be one I am pro choice pro gay but I respect all other religions I feel it often is what we are born to and yes some of us change but I feel it is important to have a belief
It is so easy for people to knock things .
LOOK FOR THE GOOD IN EVERYTHING THE BAD IS OFTEN STARING YOU IN THE FACE. there is a teeny weeny bit of good in all sometimes you just have to look harder
Remember good deeds are not always about MONEY a kind smile a gentle touch can work wonders
Being there for your neighbors is worth so much more than a dollar bill

When the world is bursting with genuine love, then we can start getiing picky about who loves whom!
Then again, when we reach that state, when we're all in love, loving and loved, we won't care will we?
Honour true love, however it shows up.
