While Aung San Suu Kyi enjoys iconic status in Myanmar (also known as Burma), women remain invisible in this country steeped in Buddhist tradition and emerging from decades of military rule.

"In a male-dominated, Theravada Buddhist society there are many cultural barriers that limit women’s behaviour and functioning," Mon Mon Myat told IPS.

"Female journalists, for example, cannot take pictures or videos of the audience, because they are not allowed to go up to vantage positions because as women they cannot stay above men or Buddhist monks," explained Mon Mon Myat.
Wow, first time I've ever heard of THAT particular form of discrimination against women!

Noted with many thanks Cal.
With women out numbering men, and the leader Suu Kyi being female, and the organizations that they have formed, these brave females just may have a chance. They have all been through so much already.

Thanks Cal. I wasn't aware of the buddhist religion being so anti-female before this article. There appear to be many hypocrisies in buddhist philosophies then. Shouldn't surprise me. Most organized religions share that view point. Doesn't make them right though. Just male controlled and very afraid of females powers.

Sadly that seems to be the case the world over. Women, their rights and well-being are under assault from all sides and especially in regions under military and religious rule.

Virtually all religions are male dominated and where that is true, so too are things like this. Westerner's don't have a monopoly on misogyny. Perhaps Wiccan's are different but if so that is about the only one I can think of. It seems the entire history of humanity, even if we are all descended from "eve" on the African continent, has been from the beginning anti-female. Time to change the way we think and act as Paul said, though not in the way he meant. :^)

Invisible women (in Burma)) are not reconised this reminds me of the Republican and where they want to take women's of to day if they gets to have the say over women's health care and how they should treads it. Like defunding Women's plandhood what's nectar coming back when women had no rights. The Bible sayes if they do it to a green tree what will man so to a dry tree. I say this because of their clams to be religious.

Thanks Cal. Women being treated 'badly' has nothing to do with religions. Its the
Men in power that do this to women. They are the ones that set the rules where women
are concerned. Take the western countries and countries where religions were banned, women
were underpaid even though they did the same jobs as men. There were always
more men in parliament compared to women. Women had to fight for their Rights
In every aspect of their lives whereas men were handed everything on a
plate. Even today in majority of the countries, western and eastern, men hold the
Power of Rule! Women are deprived of equal rights by men, not religions! Religions are
used as an excuse by MEN who misinterpret and distort verses of GOD'S Revelations to
Suit their OWN agendas, whims and fancies!
