On one hand these students would have never been invited into the USSR. Sadly, former Communists cannot shake off their past - this is clearly evident with Putin. Not until this generation has died will there be tolerance in Russia.
Pathetically, there was an opening to not re-elect Putin, but the old guard mentality remains.

Is this based on any factual information, or is it a case of racism raising its ugly head? Why is it that whenever a country takes a step forward, it always takes two steps back?

The Russians are among the world's biggest racists. This abuse is only happening because the auhtorities are allowing it to.

Ya, this is awful, but not new. Some countries are not as comfortable with foreigners. They wouldn't be the first who have had to work their way through such intolerant cultural periods. Other countries with larger immigration have had more opportunity to work through such intolerances.

Unfortunately, not surprised in the slightest. Does not make it any more acceptable though, and must be fought at all costs.
