This would be very good news, if true.

Alas, I fear the horse has already bolted.

That is the best news since this began. And yes, I hope the United States and China both follow suit. It was gratifying to see Putin's statement because there is no doubt Russia is a key player in bringing this to an end for everyone, but most of all for the people of Syria.

Thanks Cal for posting the link to the Voice of America article by Carla Babb. Read and noted. Let's hope it is not to late and I hope the agreement between Kofi Annan and Preident al-Assad will produce a good start to stopping the violence.

From the article: "Meanwhile, the U.N.'s special envoy for Syria, Kofi Annan, met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Monday before traveling to Iran. The U.N. diplomat called the talks "constructive and candid."

Translation: we met over coffee or tea and wasted each others time and the tax payer's money from contributing countries but we had to say something. The UN is totally ineffectual and a waste of space and energy.

Being the cynic that I am, the fact that Putin announced that Russia has "halted arms shipments" to Assad/Syria may confirm rumors that Syria is running out of money and/or Assad is getting ready to depart along with all the Syrian people's money he can get his hands on.

Making arms and selling them is just evil. I met an arms dealer on an international flight years ago....all governments know what is going on. If a buck can be made, they sell to even the most psycho, tyrannical regimes and rebels, insuring that there will always be wars to fight, enemies to face, people to kill and be killed.

What they mean is that Syria now has sufficient stockpiles to allow Russia to try and score points by stopping the supply. Don't worry Syria I'm sure the back door will be kept open.

It's taken over 17000 dead Syrians before the Russians did anything positive to end this slaughter. Good news but not impressed with Putin.

That is great NEWS but I still don't trust them not one little bit so this has to be watched on a constant basis and that is a fact.
