Thanks to North Dakota, US Waste of Natural Gas Grows Rapidly

The United States is posting rapid growth in the waste of natural gas in new oil fields where the fuel is either burned or vented into the atmosphere. Experts say the process damages the environment and fails to maximize the return to investors.

I find this shocking. I live in England where we are now hostage to the prices for natural gas charged by Russia (as gas reserves from the North Sea are begining to run down we have to export from the Russian gas fields). Last winter there were people living in England (and other parts of the UK) who were faced with a choice of heat or eat. To think that against this background gas is simply being wasted is nothing short of criminal!

Thanks Cal for posting the Christian Science Monitor article by Mark Clayton. Shocking stats. Such a waste of gas and the pollution it causes is an outright shame. Read and noted.

If it isn't greed it's waste.

and our local paper just had a letter to the editor saying how we should stop supporting green energy ('since we wasted billions on Solyndra') and follow North Dakota's lead.....sickens me....we need to be leaving the pollution energy in the ground and actually using it when we must rather than just polluting....

Why is no one wanting to capture it? There is quite a growing export market.

"Evidence of the trend can be seen flickering in the night across western North Dakota, where new oil drilling in the Bakken shale formation there has helped propel a surge in US flaring since 2007. As is often the case, many companies find it cheaper to burn off gas that emerges in new oil fields, rather than build pipelines and facilities to collect it."

Yet one more evidence of the 1%'s drive that ALWAYS puts dollars before people. This is a precious natural resource, one of the cleanest forms of energy we have, but because it is inconvenient, they simply let it go. Those who heat their homes with natural gas will pay for this folly in the form of higher prices and "shortages". This industry is so anti-humanity and so concerned with profit over the welfare of people that it is probably the dirtiest industry on earth. Thanks to the Koch brothers and their kindred spirits who deny the science of global warming and seem intent on destroying the environment of the only planet we have. It isn't possible to count on the North Dakota legislature to halt this, they are bought and paid for by the energy industry. Despicable people engaged in despicable business practices at the expense of all of us, including themselves fools that they are. I try to find a redeeming quality in everyone I come across but I can't find any in these "people".

This is insanity at its finest.... when you rape the Earth with no regards for the consequences and are only concerned with monetary return, you seek to destroy the only home we have and you seek to destroy life.

Money over matter always wins out. Disgusting.

Thanks Cal, and noted. This is disturbing personally, as well as to my ideals for (hopeful)longer-term and intelligent thinking of the human species, finding balance with the earth. I cry for those human grandchildren being brought into life at the cost of so much to this precious planet. That makes me a very awful social grandmother.

Waste, waste and more waste of an energy source that most 3rd world countries desperately need. Shame on on us for not demanding that these company/destroyers find ways to do something useful with this valuable resource. :(

Waste is what many companies do, simply because it costs them less and us more. I live in an area where there are oil wells dotting the landscape. They've been there all of my life and I'm accustomed to them. I've always wondered about the flame on top of the wells but never really wondered enough to question it. Maybe I should.

I just recently became aware of the facts about flaring this gas. The picture is shocking. I'll have to take the quiz. Thanks cal.

Horrible. We should be moving away from fossil fuels.

I hope I'll live to see the day the ecocidal maniacs responsible for these atrocities are judged in court as the vilest of criminals EVER!
