In fish-crazed Japan, where eating seafood is a vital part of the nation's culture, conservation groups are working with companies to persuade more Japanese to eat certified, sustainably caught seafood. It's an uphill struggle

While more and more Japanese are becoming aware of conservation issues and how to go about using activism to fix things, there are still so many that haven't a clue what is going on around them when it comes to the fact there even is a problem that needs immediate attention... by sustainable practices and conservation measures

Awareness/education on a massive scale is key to the problems and should be the first thing on the agenda if this is to work.

Good lick with that. You might see actual results just about the same time that the Chinese stop being one of if not the top supporters of the poaching trade in endangered animals for Medicinals and gourmet foods.

I would imagine given the evidence, that the prognosis for a conserving attitude to natural resources becoming popular in Japan is not very good. So far the Japanese have indicated their willingness to conserve marine life by blocking every attempt to protect the blue fin tuna, end shark fishing, hunting of whales and mass slaughter of dolphins. Their conserving loveliness goes on and on as they increase trade and consumption of elephant ivory, non-renewable tropical hardwood, tiger (and many other endangered animals) body parts. And finally, just to spit in the face of the world campaign against whaling, they used Tsunami AID given by the gullible to replace their damaged whaling fleet bastards!

It sounds like Japan can see reason in their fishing practices -China is another story.
