Politics itself is not the problem, but there are reasons we react with revulsion to the thought of "politicizing" tragedies. What repells us is the rush to collective blame, the lightning impulse to assign responsibility to one's political adversaries.

YES WE SHOULD HAVE POLICY INVOLVING HEALTHY UP BRINGING OF HUMANITY INTO THE AMERICAN SOCIETY. CONSIDERING AMERICAN SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CUT TO THE BONE AGAINST THEIR WHOLE HUMANITY DEVELOPMENT DECADES AGO, WE MUST KNOW BY WITNESSING YET AGAIN A YOUNG MAN, WHO IS MENTALLY ILL, ISOLATED & DESTRUCTIVE TO HIMSELF, KILLING OTHERS, A HUGE SIGN OF DYSFUNCTION & MISEDUCATION. AND YES, WE, OUR SOCIETY, SHOULD BE COMPASSIONATE ENOUGH FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE KNOWN HE NEEDED HELP. HOW CAN WE GET THERE?

I agree and appreciate the point that IT'S NOT SO MUCH POLITICS AS IT IS TRIBALISM.

Yet more debate about gun ownership sparked in the source's comment section. How sad for the victims and their families.

The American public, from the election of Washington has always gravitated to the person in power to be the "hero" who will get them through national tragedy.Obama has never used politics in dealing with mass shootings: Virginia Tech., Aurora.
I sadly believe he does not enter politics into this is because he has no backing for gun control; he may be in favor of it, but , he is not a man who will stand by his convictions, and fight for what is right.
This is not a man who is capable of doing what FDR did, or Johnson in signing the Civil Rights Act.There is no passion to a cause, no fight for what is right. Carter bridged a peace agreement between the two most unlikely countries in the world. Reagan enacted reforms he believed in, AND got his way through a Democratic House. Truman went over the heads of Congress, and created the Berlin airlift.
Obama......supports gays without drawing up any legislation.

I saw Romney on CNN who said gun control will be a campaign issue!!! That is really a joke - Romney and the Repugs have been whoring to the NRA for decasdes! So, who does he think he is fooling? His little empty token gesture is a bunch of crap! There once was a ban on assault weapons but Congress let it expire, and the NRA pressured for that! Besides, Romney could care less. The victims are only YOU PEOPLE the ones that his wife scaped off the bottom of her Christian Louboutin shoe in her inerview with Robin Roberts of GMA.
