Yes, I'm sure Syria's neighbors, many of whom are close enough to have the freaking wind blow those chemicals across their sandy borders are relieved to know Assad will not use them. Then why mention them? Does he think if Turkish troops came ashore he could target only them? That isn't how chemical weapons work which makes them even more dangerous in the hands of a fool like Assad. Perhaps there is a foreigner amongst the rebels? A Saudi member of Al-Qaeda? Does that qualify? The sad thing is it is probably not an empty threat, I do believe despots will use whatever they have to cling to power - which goes to show why it is so important that non-proliferation treaties and requirements be in place and be honored. Here's the craziest part of it all:

Nobody is really that worried about Assad's regime using the chemical weapons against its own people as it has such a large conventional advantage. They're worried about the rebels getting hold of those weapons and using them to balance that out. The U.S. has been considering invasion, but not to fight against the regime: The primary U.S. interest in the fight is to keep the government's weapons, and especially those chemical weapons, out of the hands of rebel factions which are tied to global terrorist groups. The U.S. wants to invade, but to fight for Assad.

sorry guys, but I know as I was born in Libya, I really don't like what happened to Libya. It would be nothing short of a tragedy if it happened to Syria. I know socialist Governments fly in the face of our democratic systems, but the truth is, we don't even have a true democracy over here in the Western World. It's a historical FACT that they looked to Sparta and chose elements of oligarchy over democracy. True democracy was seen to be - and still is by many - as the worst system of Government. And indeed, Israel has been talking about war on Syria and destabilizing the country for well about 20 years now. That's nothing new. And back in February NATO announced plans to assassinate Assad. I am interested in understanding more about the truth of what is happening in Syria. I'm thankful that we have freedom of speech and that we can express our different opinions. One of the reasons I am interested is that my daughter(in-law) went to college(in Texas)some years back, and one of her friends there is Syrian, and after graduating returned home to Damascus. They have stayed in touch over the years and about a month or so ago I started reading some of the emails that have been about what is happening over there... They were blaming Islamist extremists and even Al Qaida groups that were financed by outside groups(from the west)..they went on to say it all boiled down to oil and gas...that there were large untapped deposits in Syria...That everyone had an agenda. I was very dis-heartened to hear all this. So I'm simply keeping my eyes and ears open. I wish for the Syrian people what I wish for myself..that they be well, and may live in Peace.
Some of the sad sorry ego clutching charged reactive words used in the comment section here are one of the very reasons war's keep escalating.... All any of us want is to be heard. All of us hold the key to Peace between ourselves...

Nobody knows what the MAJORITY of Syrians want. Ruling Alawites are a minority of 10%, may be some of the other 90% want greater access to the government pie.

When Egyptian revolution was in making, some people thought that majority of Egyptians want democracy and prosperity. Instead, they votes for Islamism and militancy.

May be that is what some people want.

Old news that the USA never should have invaded Iraq and should have sent special forces to take out Bin Ladin & his gang which was small at the time.
