ABC reported on Thursday that the state offers a carrot-and-stick approach to the Olympic Games; athletes can look forward to refrigerators, cars, and televisions when they win, and labor camp when they lose.

Sad. I think that anyone who makes it to the Olympics at all is very good at what they do there!

This is a terrible way to convince people to exceed. I'd be to afraid to try!

SOP for any cultic regime with a "divine" leader.

Noted. Thanks for the information Cal.

In view of the potential consequences ot not succeeding against world-class athletes, I would think that North Korea would have difficulties getting their people to participate in the Olympics.

Anyone who even makes it to the Olympics honors their country and their sport. Not surprising treatment from an evil ruler known for his human rights abuses, but horrible nonetheless. What is surprising, is that there continue to be N Koreans willing to risk it all to participate.

trsgic. Adds to the stress of performing. I'd win, get all the goodies and apply for visas getting the hell out of there for myself and all my family.

Those 'niceties' are the result of a backward, stoneage thinking military Junta running the country. They can only be DIGRESSIVE - NEVER PROGRESSIVE.

So... if the losers all end up in labor camps, where do they get the athletes for the NEXT set of Olympics? Surely they can't ALL be former gold medalists or brand-new competitors! Isn't it kinda hard to train for a sport if you're out picking whatever it is these people eat?

I'm not saying their situation isn't extremely grim. I'm just saying I'm taking this article with a truckload of salt.
