We can all help the oceans by cleaning trash wherever we are before it makes its way into storm sewers or streams which will eventually carry it to sea. And since 80% of ocean trash comes from upstream and not direct dumping we can all make a difference in our own neighborhoods.

Thanks Cal for the link to the ENN article by Liz Shaw. That the Southern Ocean has been found to be just as contaminated as the others is to me quite distressing. We must work harder to stop this "plastic pollution" of our oceans. Read and sadly noted.

How awful. Why do people litter and how can they think it doesn't matter? We really need massive educational campaigns for people all over the world to learn to respect the environment.

humans still have a long way to go before they learn to be more 'civilized' and not mess with mother nature.

sometimes I think plastic was one of he greatest inventions, mostly I wish it never came along...

When I learned this is was a real shock.
It means of course that it's unlikely we'll ever again find any sea or ocean where the fish have not swallowed even a small quantity of plastic with its chemical poisons. It's a disaster not only for the fish but also the humans who eat them.

Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.

When all the waters are polluted,
When all the air is unsafe to breathe,
Only then will you discover
You cannot eat money.

We borrow it from our Children.

this is very sad....plastics would be a great invention if humans could learn to recycle and reuse rather than trash and trash and trash.........

there is no planet B for life, we must learn to save the one we have.....

No matter where we go, there we are.......

Bill K. great comment to keep us focused on the positive! Educating people on these issues to encourage recycling can help.

HEMP BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC WOULD BE A GOOD TRANSITION AWAY FROM OIL BASED PLASTIC.

Sea Shepard, we need another campaign to pick up all this plastic!

Flagged the spam.

Noted, Thank you Cal.

When will governments wake up to the fact that difficult decisions have to be taken? We need to re-use as much as possible, not just recycle! Remember the days when you returned bottles and got a deposit back?

When I was on holiday in Italy in the summer, I saw a great idea. You could buy a plastic bottle and fill it from a dispensing machine with washing up liquid, cleaner, washing liquid, fabric conditioner. We could all look at doing that across a whole load of products!
