Child Marriage Defies Laws in Nepal

Social activists in Nepal agree that the one reason why this impoverished country will miss the gender-linked Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations is the persistence of child marriage.

I will never understand how ANY mother can allow her daughter to be subjected to such abuse and such a bleak future. I realize that they're dealing with poverty and a very different culture --but cause and effect are obvious to most reasonable, thinking people. Change has to start somewhere, and if not with the women who have the slightest chance of effecting change, than whom?

This isn't just as simple as pedophilia. This is a call to global action, global redistribution of resources so that no country, no people live in such poverty that they have no choice but to make decisions rich countries consider immoral. There is enough here, enough resources to feed the planet, had we the will to do so, if we cared about anyone but ourselves.

I came across this quote the other day and it, to me, is the answer. "Few are the giants of the soul who actually feel that the human race is their family circle. -Freya Stark, explorer and writer (1893-1993)"

We solve this problem only when we stop defining our family as those related closely to us by blood, when we begin to understand and believe and act as if everyone on this planet is a member of our immediate family, then will we no longer be able to tolerate the conditions that exist in so many impoverished parts of our planet, because they will be experienced as if they were happening to US, not some faceless, nameless other in some part of the world we couldn't find on a map, let alone be bothered enough to care about. Our parochial attitude toward others is at root here. We need become a global society, a global family and then a global civilization. That is how this ends, nothing less will do. I don't care what religion, or what non-religion one ascribes to, this is a cause related to our entire species, our very humanity. We need care for one another because THAT is the moral thing to do, not because it benefits us, but because it is RIGHT. One needs no religion to know this, one needs only a conscience. And most of us have one. Allegedly. Though stories like this and the inaction that follows them sometimes make me wonder about our collective conscience. We need take this personally, because it IS personal. We who had the good fortune to be born into a country where more is never enough have a responsibility to our family members who weren't. Anything less is inhuman and inhumane. It is also interesting to note that this is restricted to homo sapiens as other species do take far better care of each other than do we.

Nepal is not the only country to allow child marriage and I am always disgusted that it should be allowed. Children should be children and educated.

Gene's right, of course. Issues of human poverty, ecological degradation and GREED are behind much of this.

I agree with all the comments form the other readers. The practice of child marriage should be stopped. It is child abuse. It is disgusting & heartbreaking. They are robbed of their childhood & what is being done to them sexually is the same as rape. There needs to be a law against children being forced into marriage under the age of 17 yrs. old, at least.

Child marriage is the same thing than subject them to slavery. Every child has the right to have a childhood, so the marriage of children is violence against children.
The Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1959. For what?

THIS PRACTICE IS INHUMANE & SICK. TIME TO LET THE GIRLS BE SAFE & FREE FROM SUCH MADNESS.
MAY THEY FEEL THE NEGATIVE ENERGY THEY MANIFEST HERE AND STOP THEIR EVIL WAYS.

Gene Jacobson, I would send you another star if I could. You are right, until we are concerned with all who are in poverty, and suffering abuse, it will continue. Thanks, Cal, noted and shared on FAcebook.
