China, smoking, I think I would worry about the obvious pollution problems first.

Truth is, the tobacco companies don't much care that westerners are giving up smoking. We're not their market any more. The developing world is. These appalling figures are inevitable.

that's sad, cigs are what low/middle income people in other countries turn to for stress relief and they are cheap also

That fact that people in the "Developed World" still smoke, knowing it will cause almost certain death, idiots. And the worst part? These people are killing others with their 2nd hand smoke. The problem here is, people in Developing nations are not educated about this...they don't know that smoking leads to death or other issues like respiratory problems. Maybe we should be doing more to help??

I saw a well made program on this put on by Current TV. The stands set up right outside the schools and the price is kept low to hook them. Advertising billboards make smoking seem attractive and for the poor it gives them the illusion of something they don't have. As we in the more affluent Countries have learned of the dangers the market has gone elsewhere. The tobacco industry doesn't care where it pushes it's poison, as long as it makes money.

Horrible. Tobacco products = death no matter who you are or where you live. Sadly it's the people of the low and middle income countries that will die first and probably more slowly and painfully as well. Thanks Cal.

People have smoked for hundreds of years - they are not going to stop because it might cause disease. There are more alcohol related deaths in Australia than there are from smoking. Thanks Cal.

Wow...isn't the tobacco industry proud of itself. More tombstones in their bank accounts.
