Noted and signed - I should think so - in SA you are not allowed to adopt an animal unless you have gone through a stringent process with the shelter.

Noted and signed. A screening process is definitely needed in adopting animals. If people really want an animal they won't mind having their backgrounds checked in that personal references and a vet reference is called as well as checking to make sure they can bring an animal into their home. That means checking with their landlord if they rent or verifying that they own their home if they say they own. I work with a Maine Coon recue group and that's the kind of checks we do on our adopters. Thanks so much, Cal.

I know they want to get the animals out of the shelter, but they need to be sure the animal is going to a good home- like check in with the person's vet if they've had pets before, and if the person is a renter, make sure the landlord allows pets, etc...

Done....my city has a very in-depth process to screen adoptions and there are lots of examples for the City of LA.

Screening is critical to ensure the dog's new family will be able to meet the dog's needs and provide years of tlc in the future.

While this sounds noble and worthwhile, I'm just curious as to where the shelters -- most of which are operating on a shoestring and with limited personnel already -- are going to get the resources or find the time to do such screening. If you put the cost on the adopters, then an awful lot of pets are going to go without homes.

Signed. The shelters need to protect the animals from evil people. I hate to see shelters give away cats or offer them for $5. We need national laws that make those, including backyard breeders to have to become responsible for the pets they reproduce. Right now, the breeders make the messes and then expect other good souls to clean up the mess they create.
