This oil is a new nightmare for the Canarians since last March, when the Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy, through the Minister for Industry José Manuel Soria López, gave free reign to Repsol, one of the world's biggest oil companies, for a series of t

Noted. It seems in this case that even if the citizens of the Canary Islands win, they still lose. Having politicians in bed with big corporations has always been a loss for the people.

'Still, the government in Madrid has announced that Repsol can begin drilling in the space of a few weeks. While the battle heats up, the Spanish government has cut incentives for the desalinisation of water (the only source of potable water for the islanders) and blocked the project for a windmill park on Gran Canaria. The islanders consider the moves from Madrid as a clear warning: oil or nothing.'

This is, of course, a Conservative government where profit before principle always takes precedence.

We now live in Southern Spain, a progressive and tolerant country we love, and we are planning to move to Tenerife in the Canary Islands - Europe's Hawaiian Islands. While the world's addiction to oil continues to grow it is understandable for governments to want to find ways to free themselves from the oppressive demands of the Saudis and others in OPEC, but to then stop wind farms in a place with almost constant sea breezes and desalinisation plants for the people's water supplies is criminal.

This Rajoy Conservative government is doing everything wrong to fight this current economic depression, so why would we expect the would be any better at environmental actions?

Thanks

What greedy bastards! We need wind farms, solar, geothermal, ocean turbins, and other renewable energy sources to be developed immediately. The world needs to get off it's addiction to oil and other fossil fuels before we completely destroy our environment and write our own extinction ( as well as all the other creatures of this planet). In the end it will only be fit for roaches and a few other creatures that manage to evolve very rapidly. It is a VERY sad state of affairs!

WAKE UP PEOPLE.....SCIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT IF WE EXPLOIT/ABUSE 2/3 OF THE KNOWN OIL RESERVES WE WILL GO BEYOND A TIPPING POINT FOR OUR CLIMATE......

THERE IS NO PLANET B FOR LIFE, WE MUST SAVE THE ONE WE HAVE!!!!

Bad news. Use less oil - go car-free if you can ... and support groups that promote cycling, walking and appropriate public transport.

I guess they never heard of the Gulf oil spill? They could have a wind farm instead.
