Since the European Union began allowing visa-free travel for Serbs and Macedonians, there has been a sharp increase in Roma from the Balkans applying for asylum. Despite the difficulties, Germany remains the promised land for those in the slums of Skopje

'They know how generous the child benefits are, and they have heard about the hospitals and schools. They also know that asylum applicants have been receiving more money since August.'

We have read 5 books, all sympathetic to the Gypsies, and none of them were able to help us see these people as wanting to contribute to their countries of choice. Their culture teaches that non-gypsies are there are for the plundering and few gypsies ever assimilate and truly try to work and be independent.

We live in Spain, which has the second highest gypsy population in Europe and the vast majority of them are happy to live off our social welfare system, using our free healthcare and collecting their welfare payments but few ever work for a living. They are con artists and beggars and we see them all around picking tourists' pockets and well dressed young men begging outside of supermarkets.

It is very hard to have any sympathy for a group like this who chooses to remain separate, but who are eager and adept at scamming the system and conning the rest of us, and consider it their right to do so. To assume that all people are the same is dangerous and false. Values are not the same from one group to another.

Until you have lived with them, you are not able to judge those who do.

You have to understand that the Roma and the Sinti will never assimilate. They view you as a source of money and material gain. You are to be taken advantage of. Interestingly enough there are many correlations in their view of "god" and religion with Old Testament Judaism.

I have seen Roma street operators at work in Bulgaria and Romania. The technique is simple but effective. Three females work together; one is a child or young teenager, chosen to look appealing and so act as the distraction while her accomplices are older and very adept at their trade. Once one has learned to recognise them, they are easy to spot but foreign (usually western) tourists often learn the hard way. The men have a part to play too. They lurk on the periphery of the action. If any of the women is caught, the men step in with knives and fists and drag the girls away. I have been told that a little girl's thumb may be cut off when she is around three years old to enable her to become yet more adept in later life. Forget the romantic notion of colourful wagons and the roving tinker's life on the road. This is a section of society that is bred only for criminality and which has a cold and cynical attitude to the world.

Excuse me, Michael? Where do you get your bigoted views on Judaism? I don't know anything about the Roma, and I feel tremendous pity for people of any group who live in poverty. However, I know PLENTY about Judaism, and you are absolutely, 100% wrong. We are COMMANDED to treat the stranger with dignity and respect. Judaism has NOTHING positive to say about those who would defraud others.

I suggest that you learn a little more before you make such a stupid comment.
