Rice's financial holdings could raise questions about her status as a neutral decision maker. About a third of Rice's personal net worth is tied up in oil producers, pipeline operators, and related energy industries north of the 49th parallel -- including

Thanks Cal for the link. Ms. Rice is a smart and capable individual but SoS is not the position for her because of the conflict of interest. Sen. John Kerry would be a better choice for SoS. Read and noted. Thank you Angelikanomail Roll for the link to the petition. Signed.

I would have thought that at this level in government all stocks would be in a blind trust run by a third party. Signed the petition using my US address.

Over a cup of coffee, I was just thinking how funny it will be for the republicans to say this is a reason for not supporting Rice on any future nominations.

If you were reading my posts recently I said that if Obama wanted to push through his agenda he would have to compromise and make a deal; preferably one that authorized the Keystone Pipeline or another one just like it. How apropos that this woman has ties to Enbridge and the Tar Sands among others. She should be disqualified but with the Koch Bros. and their ilk urging the GOP to affirm her she will probably get the post. Keep fighting even though it's a lost cause. We may still be able to restrict what they can actually do.

That's right, Theodore, we cannot influence govtl decisions in a meaningful way, that's why that petition focuses on a point that CAN be influenced and with enough pressure, if Ms Rice is not totally insane or extra hard-boilded she will get rid of that stuff.

With Obama's disgraceful track record concerning the environment, his choice as Sec. of State is not surprising.
What was surprising was her connection to the Keystone pipe line, and Obama's approval of it.

Thanks for posting, Cal. *I'm sorry I'm unable to send you a star since I sent one in the past week.
And, much thanks, Angelika!...Petition signed & shared.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Obama would want either Rice, (because of this conflict of her interest), or Kerry---as that would remove him from his MA Senate seat. Elizabeth Warren just had the fight of her life against Scott Brown there, and beat him. With Kerry moving to SofS, that would line up Brown to be in a perfect position to take that seat again. How about Al Gore? Or even Bill Clinton, (don't know if that would be appropriate). Why does Obama present 2 candidates that would ultimately hurt his Progressive base?!

All these political people make me sick. All they give a darn about is their accouts growing and growing. Maybe there should be laws that prohibit these politicians from having stocks in these sort of companies in the first place. Or maybe if they do, they can't run or seat on any political field. Thanks Cal.

Although I support our President, this information about Ms. Rice would give me pause in supporting her as the new Sec. of State. It is a clear conflict of interest.

This explains a lot. Government decision makers should not be allowed to be appointed if there is a possible conflict of interest. At the very least their financial affairs should be turned over to a neutral agent during their term in office.

This is obviously an area of conflict of interests. She should sell the stocks.
Unfortunately, not being American, I could not sign the petition provided by Angelikanomail right at the top of this list of comments.

Rice would never be confirmed if she didn't divest herself of stocks involved with the pipeline. Obama has not made his final decision and I agree with Lois regarding choosing Kerry and the seat it would leave open. The idea of Bill Clinton as SOS, I like it. He certainly can get along with other nations, has the charisma to sway things his way. I am so tired of the GOP fighting everything that the Obama Admin does. Guess they haven't figuered out why they've lost the past two elections. I am confident Obama will do the right thing for our country.

Thi is eyebrow-raising for sure..However, anyone who has "mutual funds", if you check your portfolio, does it mention TransCanada? Could all of us that vehmently are upset by the Keystone XL pipeline actually be "supporting" it? Just wondering..

not only should Ms. Rice sell her stocks, but she should NOT be making a final decision on this issue if she is secretary of state....seems like it should come from EPA or Energy Secretary anyway...........

KXL = the end of our chance to stop climate change....and maybe the start of another great extinction........
