"Neither side can win."

YES! Anyone can see that. But they all keep spilling blood, don't they?

How a president can watch this happening to his people is quite beyond me. If he loved his people, he would stand down and let them vote.

What's happening is absolutely tragic.

Lindsay,

Islamists of Al-Queda and other hateful groups fighting Assad will be horrible to Syrian minorities. Rebels already imposed jizya tax on Syrian Christians... Socialist Assad may be better for the true Syrians than the rebels.

People are forgetting the human tradgedy in all of this . There is never a winner in war , everyone is a looser espcially those that take lives. Once these islamists take control of the government nothing will stop them from causing a war in the whole region. Look at what happened in Libya and Egypt , the government in Egypt is imposing centuries old Islamic laws in the 21 century. God help those that have no escape from these barbaric countries.

Thanks Cal for the link to the article by Mariam Karouny. The Assad government won't last, but I fear that even with a rebel victory the average Syrian citizen will not reap any benefits from Assad's fall from power. Read and noted.

I'll second that Nicolas. Both sides in this awful conflict seem equally bad and the unfortunate Syrian civilians in the middle are suffering the most terrible casualties. I can't believe how little reaction there has been to recent events in Syria. Over 40000 dead so far!!!!!!!

40,000 dead - It is incomprehensible how a country can tear itself apart. Nicolas and Stan are quite right. There are no winners here, only losers and more to come.

A clear picture on how Socialism gets defeated by Islamism.

The problem that will develop is that you cannot mix religion and politics. When that happens all enemies become the enemy of god. There can be no negotiations with people that make religion the foundation for government and law. The current struggle is one of a dictator that has gone too far for too long. The result will be a fundamental religious based government that will not tolerate a civil non-sectarian society. It will be a new dictatorship with a holy leader. Out of the frying pan into the fire!

Yes, Ira, 100% right. And the way out of religious dictator will be more bloodied, if possible at all. Islamist fanatics will not repeat elections - democracy is Un-Islamic.

Colleen,

Unfortunately there is not end to it. Even if the Islamists manage to build that World Caliphate, the wars that will start after will drown all humanity in the blood.
