An interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties has infuriated many readers since it was posted Saturday on a newspaper's website.

It seems as though the 'opinions ' do vary on this...from outrage/anger to thankful for the info. Not sure how I feel as I am not concerned about knowing who all has one as there are plenty no doubt in any given neighborhood.....certain states with lax gun laws there are probably more but just about anywhere in the U.S. the numbers are too high I think...especially when it comes to assault and automatice firearms. People living in fear on top of fears ...all of which are promoted daily by religion/government/corporates. What a world huh.

Hmmm, while I do not approve of gun owners, telling everyone who does, is not very amart. Anyone can know where to break in and find them now!!

I'd be thankful for the info, too, if I wanted to steal a gun. Provided of course that no one was home to shoot me.

Thanks Cal for the link to the CNN article by KC Maas and Josh Levs. Not sure what publishing the info will accomplish. Read and noted.

Ok, a couple of caveats. I heard that the names of police and judges were included..which isn't helpful or cool, however, otherwise I will quote what I submitted to CNN yesterday on this:

The truth is that true criminals will always get guns, whether we expose them or not. It is the one-off sociopaths that can access weapons that must truly be feared and truth being stranger than fiction, that category of normal gun holders is where these lunatics are hiding out and accounts for the Newtown massacre and the killing of the firefighters in upstate New York.
Of course most gun holders aren't criminals or lunatics, but defending the rights of those few under the cover of protecting individual rights is its own form of lunacy, with deadly results. I think gun holders should be just as willing to reveal themselves as they are to hold guns in the first place so we know where potential harm can come from.

It's not a good idea at all. The neighbors who have no guns can be broken into and the whole house will be carted away while they are on vacation.

If I need a gun I will check this list, thanks.

I'm a vegan who does not own, and has never owned, a gun. Publishing this list is wrong. Gun Laws need to be tightened and enforced. BUT people who have followed the current laws, and who have not committed, or enabled, violation of current laws should not be harassed.

I couldn't agree with you more Cecily. I think it is irresponsible since most weapons owners are responsible people who secure their firearms properly. It is the automatic weapons I'm concerned about. Who needs an AR15; an M4 or an MP5 if you are not a policeman or in the military or national guard. The sad part is that they are available at all to the general public.

Very hypocritical move on CNN's part.

1. Guns are legal. To print the names of gun owners implies that they are not legal and that the owners are committing a crime.

2. What would be more helpful is to find out who owns an arsenal of assault weaponry and who has a record for criminal activity while owning an arsenal of assault weaponry. Without that data, the list is nothing more than cheap sensationalism that does nothing to contribute to the national discussion on guns and homicides.

3. I do not agree that it is helpful to thieves to know who has guns. Virtually any house in some of those areas contains guns. I am shocked at the number of homes with guns.

A shotgun can kill. Why no permit required to buy one?

It was/is absolutely disgusting what that newspaper did! I believe in self-defense. If liberals get their way good citizens shall be at the mercy of the insane and hardcore criminals.

I wonder if they'd publish lists of people who own BMW or Mercedes cars?

outlaw guns

It's not a liberal or a Neocon issue Debbie..there are plently of gun owners on both sides of the political spectrum...:" liberals just believe there need to be better gun controls and not just lip service as to being 'a responsible' gun owner..which is like the Banksters saying they don't need regualtions as they will act responsible...and most of us know how that is working out also. Might I suggest you watch something other than Rupert Murdoch's righwing propaganda Tv program .

I can't remember another time I was so conflicted on an issue. I think the bottom line is, this information is a matter of public record; I just don't know if I would want to information simply handed over to the public.

Well now all the homes that don't have guns are advertisements for potential break-ins. Take a pick thieves!

Don't even get me started. Public records are just that. People who take out a permit for a weapon, or anything else for that matter, have to know it is a matter of public record. The criminals have been given a boost, but if they were smart, most aren't, they could go to City Hall and get the info.

Seems to me the article served its purpose....we're all still talking about guns. This isn't going away this time. Keep the conversations going so we can get some bills passed.

beats having a sign saying "guard dog on duty" or such and such security system guards this house or putting fake wires taped to the windows. How about a little box in front of the house with life insurance forms (like at the airport) so burglars can fill them out in case "they feel lucky"?
You'd think the NRA would want to publicize a list to show how many of it's backers are "just the guy next door".

it's a good idea but why only "talking" about guns and not "doing" anything ????

Gee,. I thought the purpose of having an onsight firearm was to deter crime. That is what the NRA use to preach. Now that the so calleed criminals know these properties are packing heat. You would believe they would break into someone elses home.So why are those gun owners angry? Maybe because now they might not get the chance to shoot a person commiting a crime ? Worried about someone stealing their firearms? Sounds to me like they are careless anyway storing their firearms.i believe in Freedom pof the Press. Not much of thast left these days. It is good to se there is some left.

I think that what should cause outrage is the fact that people have guns! Guns have one purpose and it's a nasty one.
