As a capital city, Berlin has endured more than its fair share of division over the years. Now new battle lines are being drawn over what some see as a fight for the city's character.

The argument is not about money. It is about becoming carbon neutral.
For this, most of the gas lamps should go. However, in places that are important historically or just because they are picturesque, one could keep some lamps going.
It's called having one's cake and eating it too - or - feeding the wolf and keeping the sheep safe.

Thanks Cal for the link to the article by Peter Jeary. Both side of the situation were well covered but IMHO conservation should win out. Read and noted.

Upon seeing the article, I immediately thought of this:

Lili Marlene

Vor der Kaserne
Vor dem großen Tor
Stand eine Laterne
Und steht sie noch davor
So woll'n wir uns da wieder seh'n
Bei der Laterne wollen wir steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marlene
Wie einst Lili Marlene.

[First line as given in English goes "Underneath the Gas-light" {Laterne in German}.]

An iconic song sung by BOTH German and American troops during WWII.

Now it's just running and running thru my head...
{You can look up the melody if you don't know it... it's haunting and sad and nostalgic... }
{Lili Marlene waiting *forever* by the Gas-light for her soldier to come back... }
