In an incident eerily similar to a sexual assault that sent shock waves worldwide, Indian police say a woman was gang-raped over the weekend by seven men after she boarded a bus at night.

Noted. Way back in 1979, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, (CEDAW), was adopted by the U.N. and signed by Pres. Carter. It's still never been ratified by the US Senate.

The last comment is significant: India's rape problem needs a rewiring of society's attitude.
I don't have time to open the link tonight, but the title says it all.

Just don't know what is wrong with these people. They obviously have no respect for women. Evidently these people are incapable of love or compassion. Very very sad.

Castration with blunt instruments and minimal to no anesthetic might send the right message to those who may think rape is a team sport. Barbaric and inhumane to suggest such a horrible action you say - you betcha. Then there's always impelling.

I hope there is good evidence and they are all convicted. This has got to stop.

Wow, those Indian male POSs are out of control. Can the Indian women get guns and kill these POSs if they are attacked? The police seem like no help.

These guys are brutalizing women and they get their heads covered so they can't be identified, they should be made to stand naked in front of everyone.

How ironic that cultures deemed very conservative tend to be the most brutal in their treatment of women.

The timing makes it all the more astonishing. Haven't they noticed what's been in the news in India lately? Do they expect compassion in the current climate?

The key point to remember in these discussions is that this is secular activity, completely unrelated to Hindi practices, similar to demand for self-immolation of widows upon the funeral pyre ... This violence against women is deeply endemic to ethnic sub-cultures within the Indian continent, probably related to centuries of over-population ... Unfortunately, in a country plagued by numerous & severe social problems, the plight of women is easily swept away in the deluge of human devastation ... This global focus may be the *only* way that attention will remain on this issue within India

Problem of sexual abuse of woman is directly link to their right in property in Indian society, without such right their economical status is extremely poor and low and a low economic status mean their human right can easily violated, and even they can't hope for justice because in 21st century justice by civil court first needs a lawyer even the victims don't have right to represent themselves in court that's the modern and so called democratic society who argue for equality by law but not in law.

Take the head covers off and expose them as the monsters they are. The do not deserve an ounce of privacy.

poetic justice: turn them over to the women who live in the village.
ditto to taking the head covers off. They took far more from the woman than their "shame" of being known.

What a sick lot of Punjabies, just like in Dheli. My wife is Indian and she mentioned they should be hanged by their nuts with piano wire, but very, very slowly. She is right and we will never go to a Punjabi restaurant again. We used to before Dec.16. once a week. I never knew Sikhs were that bad.
