This is a conundrum for the west and the USA. The Alawits have a much more liberal type of attitude to women and a far greater tolerance of other religions. In Turkey the Alewis (ame thing) have men and women worshiping together and both men and women perform their sacred dances with which they worship God. Women can also become spiritual leaders. When they call people to prayer, they announce that they are about to begin worship and all people are welcome to join them, whatever their religion.
So this is the religion of the government that is so heinously mass murdering people. The rebels on the other hand are Sunni Muslims, who oppress women horribly and who certainly would never become friends with western countries.
So - take your pick.
That's possibly why intervention is paralyzed.

What is it going to take to finally end this? When there isn't a rebel standing?
