I am an Australian and I am so ashamed of the way Asylum seekers are treated. Over the years I have watched both the main political parties vie to see who can treat them the worst.

Since John Howard became PM and now the Labour Gov. The suicide rate of young people in custody has escalated by over 600%. It is a sad and shameful time and it does not seem that there is any support for the weakest and most vulnerable people.

Who ARE these "asylum seekers?" Honestly, I can understand the reluctance of the Australian government to just allow any & all illegal immigrants into their country.

Terrorism has taken a toll on all of us, hasn't it?

On one hand...there may well be some fleeing persecution in their own country....but, how many of them are in that state?

I am Australian and I do not support illegal immigrants. Australia has a large legal intake of migrants. What we have here are queue jumpers. They spend large amounts of money, read again large amounts of money to fly to Indonesia quite legally. They pay people smugglers again large amounts of money to get into Australian waters. They throw away all their documentation so they can't be identified. Remember they got into Indonesia legally with passports and visas. Toss the mobile over the side and bingo a poor refugee.
Many of the people smugglers have themselves been granted refugee status, their new lives are making money in the people smuggling trade while Australia houses and feeds their families.
Its now a joke in Australia that our poor people are better off flying to Indonesia and getting a boat back at least then you would be housed, fed, given cigarettes, free internet, health looked after, teeth fixed etc.
Just watched a TV program where a man was flying back to Yemen with $20,000. He had been granted asylum in the UK. He had never worked, Britain had housed the family (lots of kids) in 4 years he had amassed enough money to return to somewhere supposedly life threatening with a nice stash as cash leaving his family in the UK to keep collecting.

Hi pam w - being Australian I will try to fill you in on who these people are. They arrive in old rusty ex fishing boats after paying a hefty fee to people smugglers mainly through Indonesia & Malaya. Many of the boats don't make it to our shores and the death toll is high, men, women and children. They are seeking assylm - refugee status - they're mainly from Sri Lanka, Iraq and Afganistan. After they're processed around 95% are found to be genuine refugees - so they are given that status. Illegal immigrants on the other hand normally come in by plane from all over the world - they overstay their visas and are rarely caught. For many years both major Political parties have tried to find all sorts of solutions to stopping these boats and each one brings in more elaborate policies. Australia helped create some of these refugees by going to war in their countries - that's the price our Politians have to pay for that - anything else is just hypocrisy. Good Luck PNG for tackling this issue.

If these people are Muslims, then it should be known that Muslims are already colonizing Australia, using up resources for tax-payer housing, food, medical, schooling, and they insist upon living in their own areas. Not only that they are FREQUENTLY voicing that Islam will take over in Australia.

So good for Australia, and may they keep these fake asylum seekers out.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for speaking out.

I hear about what is happening in Australia a lot, because I have friends living there and they keep me informed about the riots, the arrogance, the repeated threats from Islamic immigrants to take over Australia and make it subject to Sharia. This is no idle threat, either.

Cal, you should have done your homework better on this before posting this.

In the UK we have a large number of illegal "asylum" seekers who are actually people who just want to live off our benefit system while those in genuine need go without.

They also do not stay in the open and go underground and become difficult to find if they fail in their application and are to be deported. Whilst I agree that people should not be help in detention indefinitely, what about the rights of the citizens of the country? I don't see why disabled people, the elderly or single mothers should pay for them and that is what is happening in both the UK & Australia.

Many Muslims come into both countries legally and become a welcome part of the community. Others come in legally as well as illegally and fail to become part of the community, cause upset & distress and leach! Because of their aggression, their forceful attempts to change the society to Sharia law, rapes etc they make themselves unwelcome and unwanted and there are far too many of them.

it is well known that a lot of these "refugees" really do toss their docs and then become whoever they want. when natives of a country are starving, homeless and without health care, really, i'm not going to fault them for resenting newcomers getting 1000s in benefits that they, as citizens, have no right or access to. something is seriously wrong with that picture and if you put yourself in the shoes, you can't feed or house your kids but they show up and get free housing, tv, phones, all that, if you're ok with that happening while YOUR kids go hungry, what the hell is wrong with you? what parent with a beating heart WOULDN'T resent that?

Has anyone here actually been to an Australian detention centre? They get a big TV, internet, computer, always have a full pantry and fridge plus free healthcare, psyciatric care and of coursee a free roof over their head paid for by Aussies who work their a$$es off to pay those taxes. IF there is no room then they get put in a hotel and are put on the dole, little to no supervision and often up to 4 star accomodation (with a pool!).

It is no surprise we get so many coming here, they are treated better then the citizens.

Thanks Cal.

I agree with Ros G.

I don't understand why Australia can't ot won't process our asylum seekers more humanely, and efficiently, and will be fascinated to see what haooens re PNG's challenge.

Thanks Mary and Cal for the article as well. As for those pushing the Muslim side of this thread - Yes, the bulk are Muslims and Australia is trying to push them off onto countries that had no part in these wars. As for those that call them "illegals, "queue jumpers" how come they get refugee status? DAH!! when successive Australian governments say that's what they are. It's all a sham to get more votes at the next election..we'll blow them up..we'll sent them here.. and it works every time because of the fear that has been generated. One way Australia can go is to withdraw from the UN charter on refugees and not except any or they can negotiate to take only the ones that have been processed by the UN but that means we end up with the poorest of poor and usally from Africa and the Governments don't won't that either. The other thing they can do is not go to war with these Muslims countries in the first place or beat up hysteria like "The Weapons of Mass Destruction". You probably all fell for that as well and if you didn't then you have another motive - saving that supposedly small white country in the midst of it all. If you think they are doing all this for you out of the goodness of their hearts..well..we'll see.

Many posters are missing out on the benefits these cultural enablers have also brought to the shores of Europe where their endeavors to integrate the indigenous population peacefully have failed and violence is being turned to, only for the greater good of the indigenous

The article is misleading in the number of illegal immigrants entering Australia saying "only" in comparison to countries with far larger populations:

"Australia receives a fraction of the total asylum claims in industrialised countries, with 11,488 in 2011, compared to 66,800 in Southern Europe and 74,000 in the United States. During the first half of 2012, Australia received 7,879 asylum applications, while France received 25,361 and Germany 22,477."

To put this in perspective Australia only has 22,906,117 people taking in 11,488 immigrants in 2011. The USA has 311,591,917 people and took in 'only' 74,000 immigrants. Do the math: By proportion that would mean the US would have to take in 1,006,400 immigrants to compare to the numbers Australia takes in as a percentage of its population.

Do the rest of the math to compare to all the other countries. Australia takes in far more immigrants than the others for its size. And remember that the vast majority of land in Australia is desert.

If this man on PNG is so concerned for the plight of these illegal immigrants why doesn't he get PNG to take them all in? Let Amnesty Int'l pay for their upkeep and settlement.

We've read stories like this before and there aren't many of these 'refugees' who are fleeing true persecution. Most just want to make money. A leading Muslim authority said recently that 80% of Muslims here in the EU live on welfare and contribute nothing to their host countries while causing our once generous welfare systems to come near collapsing.

All of you who are so concerned with these illegals please write to your Congressional Representatives and beg them to take them all! Please. Empty your wallets, but don't condemn others who fear the swamping of their own social services and the crime that will come if they just opened their doors and let anyone come in who decided they wanted to. Get real.

Here in the UK we are sinking under the weight of thousands of illegals. Let me give you just one example of how this costs we who have to pay for them:

We have a Muslim leader who has lived here for years, never has paid a penny into our social security (pensions, dole, healthcare) and has been constantly in the headlines for preaching hate against this country, its people, gay people, democracy, freedom of speech, Christians and Jews, telling Muslim immigrants to refuse to assimilate and to hate our culture,, laws and values of tolerance, and preaching subversion and sedition. He is an enemy of civilisation.

YET he has been living on the dole the whole time and just recently was moved from his roomy taxpayer provided home to a bigger house costing over 300,000GBP! He complained the previous house, which no British citizen could have ever been given if they fell on hard times and had to go on the dole, wasn't nice enough for him. And all this pampering while the government is trying to find ways to deport the SOB and his huge family.

We have an estimated 22,000 Muslim families with multiple wives and scores of inbred children who live on welfare, get free healthcare and housing. Our generous Parliament recently increased the payments to multiple wife families even though polygamy is illegal here for you and me, but fine for them (so much for the rights of women!). These people have been shown to produce a large proportion of children born with defects, disease and mental retardation - all having to be supported by the working British people. Meanwhile the average hard working Brit who has worked all his/her life couldn't get that kind of support if needed and we have the lowest pension payments in the whole of the EU.

You who care so much and want open doors so that anyone can just step onshore and head for the nearest welfare office and live lives of indolence and ease, sponsor even just one of these people - pay for their upkeep, food, healthcare and housing.

Someone who is truly escaping persecution should be helped as much as we can to get on their feet. No one would deny them a welcoming hand, but most of these illegals do not fit into that category. Use a little common sense here, please.

By the way Ros G, why don't you step up and offer to sponsor some of these illegals yourself? YOU take them in and pay their way. Put your money where your mouth is for a change. Fat chance.

The supremacist misogynistic genocidal ideology of Islam had created 58 Muslim majority countries, which are dysfunctional because Islam promotes corruption and high birth rate, since women have no say about it. Therfore, Islam has destroyed those countries to the extent that people cannot be fed and thus flee to reach our "corrupt" Western civilization, which they want to turn into sharia-run countries in order to "feel at home". They are using Western values of compassion toward those immigrants and are destroying communities into which they move.

What is happening in Australia is also happening in Europe and North America where Muslims are terrorising the countries into which they have been welcomes and try to undermine those countries. Unless Islam reforms to be compatible with European, American and Australian constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, only those citizens who are escaping because of their prosecutions under sharia, should be admitted to the Western Countries.

Thank you Rob&Jay B for collecting some stats and trying to make a fair assessment of the situation. We have several migration programs here and the Refugee/Humanitarian intake is just one. Others are people that want to settle in Australia permanently must have minimum of 420K because they don't get funding. Then there's family reunions where they are sponsored for 2years because they have no access to funding, etc and other sponsorships. Our illegal immigrants are around 125,000 these are people that overstay there visa and disappear. Even with all these people - we still get the business sector crying poor and want to bring in cheap labour. At present farmers can bring in groups from the Phillipines for the harvests. Our richest woman in the world wants to bring Africians into her mines because they will work for $2per day. This is what undermines our social security system rich people paying little tax and wanting workers to work for a pittance and they won't pay tax either.

Carola May - you are a joke. Our family has sponsored one of these illegals. A middle class white boy from England - he came here on a work visa - met my daughter and didn't want to go back to England when his visa expired - a very common practise these days - maybe you should try it for yourself. Don't know what you give back to your country but I have been paying my share of taxes each year since 1969, have never been on welfare of any sort and don't support Political parties that don't have a social agenda
